On a Linux server, run your encoder as a systemd service, enable the service at boot, and give it a restart policy. That brings the encoder back after a reboot or process failure—but it does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. Test the full path from media file to YouTube Live Control Room, and secure the rights to every track and visual you broadcast.
What you need before configuring automatic startup
- A Linux host that can access your media files and stay connected to the internet. This might be an existing PC or server, a VPS, or a small Linux computer; encoding capacity depends on the workload, so do not assume a particular board or VPS can handle it.
- An encoder such as FFmpeg, installed and tested with your media. FFmpeg is one option, not a requirement.
- YouTube Live access. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public repositories, screenshots, and logs, and reset it if exposed. YouTube describes the key as the stream’s “password and address” in its encoder guidance.
- Broadcast rights for the Indian music and any other material in the stream. A song being Indian music, a personal copy, or access through a music subscription does not automatically grant live-streaming rights.
Choose where the encoder will run

Whichever host you choose, systemd can start a service during normal boot and restart the encoder process if it exits. Neither mechanism guarantees recovery from every network, media-source, or YouTube-side problem.
Configure the YouTube ingest details
- Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room for the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and key shown there into the encoder’s configuration. Do not paste the key into a public script, repository, screenshot, or routine log output. If it leaks, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the service configuration.
- If you use encrypted ingest, select the RTMPS URL supplied by Live Control Room. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; do not assume an RTMP address becomes an RTMPS address by changing its label. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the stream key and URL available to the service through a protected configuration method appropriate to your host. Exact file locations, ownership, and permissions depend on your operating system and setup.
Run the encoder under systemd
First make the media command work interactively as the same account and with the same file paths that the eventual service will use. Then put that working command in a systemd unit, set its working directory and protected configuration, and enable the unit for the machine’s normal boot target. A systemd FAQ explains boot activation through the target’s wants directory; examples of FFmpeg services show status and log checks. Exact unit syntax and whether a system or user service is right for you depend on the host. Consult the systemd unit documentation and your distribution’s systemd guidance.
Set a restart policy deliberately
Choose a restart behavior that fits the encoder process and how you want it handled when it exits. An example implementation uses Restart=always, but that is an example rather than a universal recommendation. A restart policy can relaunch a failed process; it cannot fix a missing media file, invalid key, unavailable network, or YouTube rejecting or freezing the feed.

Enable and inspect the service
After installing the unit, enable it so it starts at boot, then start it for an initial test. Use systemctl status with your unit name to inspect the service and journalctl to follow its logs. A running service only confirms that systemd sees a process—not that viewers can see and hear a healthy stream.
Test startup through a controlled reboot
- Run the encoder command interactively and confirm it can read the source media and connect to YouTube.
- Start the systemd service and inspect its status and logs for command errors, missing files, permissions problems, or connection failures.
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, verify that the stream is receiving data and that its preview and status are as expected.
- Reboot the host during a safe test window. After it comes back, check the service status and logs again, then confirm in Live Control Room that YouTube is receiving and publishing the feed.
- Check the stream itself for picture and sound. Community operations notes describe cases where local process activity did not make a YouTube-side freeze obvious, so process supervision and an end-to-end check answer different questions.
Handle 24-hour streams and music rights
Do not assume one complete archive for a continuous day-long stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its live-streaming help. That threshold is not a promise that an uninterrupted 24-hour stream will appear as one complete archive. Check the current Live Control Room and archive behavior for your channel, and decide whether periodic stream boundaries suit your use case; the available guidance does not establish one best segmentation schedule.

Confirm rights before leaving the stream unattended
YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions require the creator to have “all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world,” including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. YouTube also says it scans live streams for third-party content and may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it if protected material continues. Even a licensed creator can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to the Content ID allowlist. See YouTube’s copyright guidance. Resolve licensing and allowlisting questions before relying on an unattended broadcast.
