YouTube can receive an encoder feed again after a disconnect, but it does not promise to restart your playlist at the exact song or timestamp where it stopped. First check whether the original live event is still active, then reconnect the encoder to that event using its configured stream URL and key. Whether playback resumes at the last song depends on the player or playlist source—not a YouTube “resume last song” setting.
Reconnect the feed without confusing it with playlist recovery
A YouTube live stream has two parts that matter during a failure: the incoming audio-video feed sent by your encoder, and the broadcast event viewers watch. YouTube documents these separately as a liveStream and a liveBroadcast. Reconnecting the feed is not proof that a completed broadcast can be reopened, and neither action guarantees that the playlist will return to its previous song position. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation explains the distinction.
YouTube’s stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it; the stream URL is the destination entered in the encoder. Treat the key like a password. YouTube calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Manage live stream settings also describes reusing stream settings and available auto-start and auto-stop controls. These settings do not amount to a promise that YouTube will restart an encoder or save a music playlist’s position.

- Check the event in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and inspect whether the intended event is still active, whether YouTube is receiving the encoder feed, and whether a stream-health or policy issue is shown.
- Restore the encoder or player output. Restart or reconnect the software or device that sends the music feed. Use the stream URL and key configured for the intended event. Do not reset the key unless there is a reason to do so; the encoder needs valid connection details to send video and audio to YouTube.
- Verify the preview and event state. Confirm that the preview has both picture and sound and that the original event is still active before telling viewers the stream is back. If the original event is complete or no longer usable, the official documentation reviewed here does not promise it can be reopened; you may need a different broadcast event.
- Check what the playlist source did. Look at the player’s queue and playback position. If it restarted at the beginning, skipped a track, or stopped, correct that in the player or playlist system. YouTube’s feed reconnection controls do not specify how third-party playback software restores its state.
- Test restart behavior before unattended use. Simulate a restart during a track and note whether your exact encoder/player combination resumes the same track, starts that track over, advances, or begins the playlist again. Do not assume a saved position unless you have confirmed it in your setup.
Choose recovery based on what failed
| What you find | What to do |
|---|---|
| The event is active, but no encoder feed is arriving | Reconnect the encoder to that event with its configured stream URL and key, then verify the Live Control Room preview. |
| The feed is arriving, but the music restarted or moved to another song | Use the player or playlist controls to restore the intended track. YouTube does not document a last-song playback-position control for encoder restarts. |
| The event is complete or the original watch page is no longer active | Check the event state in Live Control Room. The sources reviewed do not establish that a completed broadcast can be reopened; decide whether to create or use another event and communicate any new link to viewers. |
| YouTube reports a copyright or policy interruption | Resolve the reported rights or policy issue before trying again. Restarting the encoder alone may not restore a stream that YouTube has interrupted or terminated. |
Indian music rights can interrupt a technically healthy stream
“Indian music” does not establish that you own or have permission to use every recording, composition, performance, or visual in a playlist. Confirm that your rights cover the exact content and territories where it will be streamed. This is a practical rights check, not a legal conclusion about any particular catalog.

YouTube says all live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. It states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If a match is detected, YouTube may show a warning or replace the live stream with a placeholder; if the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also end a stream. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
A license does not necessarily prevent an automated interruption. YouTube instructs creators with licensed third-party content to ask the rights owner to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist; without allowlisting, a live stream can still be interrupted, including where territorial restrictions apply. For music-channel guidance, YouTube for Artists recommends coordinating with the label or distributor when using copyright-protected music in a live stream.

What YouTube’s controls do—and do not do
- Stream URL and key: let the encoder send a feed to YouTube; protect the key as a credential.
- Auto-start and auto-stop: available stream settings that affect starting or stopping a broadcast. They are not a documented watchdog for restarting a failed encoder or restoring a song position.
- DVR: lets viewers pause, rewind, and continue during a live stream. It does not restart the operator’s encoder or playlist.
- Broadcast and stream resources: the incoming feed and the viewer-facing event are distinct. A working feed does not by itself establish that the intended event is still active.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an uploaded-video playlist that needs to stay live on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. Each slot streams uploaded files as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and it does not guarantee a particular song position after an interruption. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. In India, UPI and cards work; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
