To run a 24/7 Indian music stream that changes songs automatically, you need three things: a catalog you are allowed to stream, playlist automation that feeds tracks in a chosen order, and a delivery destination such as an Icecast/Shoutcast audio server or YouTube Live. Settle the rights for the exact recordings, compositions, territories, and platforms before going live; neither playlist software nor a platform’s music tools grant rebroadcast permission.
Choose the kind of stream you want to deliver
Start by deciding whether listeners should receive audio from a web player or watch a video stream on YouTube. The choice affects your setup, but it does not change the need to clear the music rights.
| Destination | Typical chain | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Audio stream on a website or compatible player | Rights-cleared audio files or playlist → Liquidsoap rotation and fallback → Icecast or Shoutcast → player or website | You operate or arrange the audio server and its delivery. Plan for listener demand, bandwidth, monitoring, and recovery. |
| Video stream on YouTube Live | Rights-cleared music in a video feed → encoder or video-capable workflow → YouTube Live | YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Account status, platform enforcement, and any required rights-owner allowlisting matter. |
There is no universal hardware, bitrate, or server-capacity prescription for every station. Your choices depend on audience size, whether you need video, encoding load, operating skill, and budget.

A song can involve distinct rights in the sound recording and in the underlying musical and literary works. A permission covering one component does not necessarily clear the others, and a license may be limited by territory, platform, duration, monetization, or other terms.

Make a rights record for every track
Use recordings you own or have explicit permission to stream. Record, for each item, the recording owner or administrator, the composition and lyric rights, the permitted platforms and territories, the license term, attribution and reporting conditions, and any Content ID allowlisting instructions. Ask the relevant rights holders or administrators to confirm in writing that the grant covers continuous online streaming in your planned setup.
IPRS explains its role in relation to musical and literary works and identifies sound-recording rights as a separate matter involving recording owners or administrators. Its license applies to the repertoire and members it represents; it should not be treated as clearance of every right in every song. IPRS also lists streaming license categories, so confirm that the relevant category and repertoire cover your intended use.
Do not assume a radio or music-service license covers this stream
PPL India’s FAQ describes its radio broadcast license as applying to terrestrial stations. That description does not establish permission for an independent internet stream. PPL India’s advertised library of more than 1.04 crore songs across multiple Indian languages is a lead to investigate, not blanket authorization to broadcast those songs online. Ask PPL and any other relevant rights administrator to confirm the specific online use in writing.

Buying a track or having a normal personal listening subscription does not, by itself, establish permission for a public rebroadcast. Likewise, a license from one organization should not be assumed to cover rights it does not own or administer. This is a practical guide, not a legal determination of your particular catalog or use; get confirmation from the relevant rights holders for your plan.
Build and automate the rotating playlist
Liquidsoap supports playlist sources and can send audio to Icecast or Shoutcast. Its documentation describes both ordered playback and shuffled playlists, as well as reload settings. The exact syntax can vary by installed version, so check the documentation for the version you deploy rather than copying a configuration intended for another release.
- Prepare a rights-cleared source list. Keep the playlist limited to files for which your permissions are documented. Decide who can edit the list and how changes will be reviewed for rights and accuracy.
- Choose the rotation behavior. Use an ordered playlist if you want a predictable sequence that repeats, or a shuffled mode if you want the order to vary. Randomized order can repeat tracks depending on configuration; test the actual behavior before relying on it.
- Set how the playlist reloads. Liquidsoap’s cookbook gives an example of shuffling and reloading a remote list every ten minutes. That is an example, not a required interval. Choose a reload behavior that suits how often you update the list, then verify that edits appear without interrupting playback.
- Connect the output. Configure Liquidsoap to send the audio to your Icecast or Shoutcast server, then confirm that a listener can open the resulting stream in a compatible player.
- Test the cycle. Check that tracks advance, that a changed playlist is picked up as intended, and that the configured order or shuffle behavior matches your station’s expectations.
Do not treat a technically functioning playlist as evidence that its songs are licensed. Keep the rights record connected to the catalog so new or replacement tracks are reviewed before entering rotation.

- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Keep playback moving when the main playlist fails
A continuous station needs a fallback for an unavailable, empty, or invalid primary playlist. Liquidsoap’s quickstart demonstrates a safe fallback source. Configure a known-good fallback item or alternate playlist and test what listeners hear when the primary source is deliberately unavailable.
Recommended Free Tools
Fallback playback helps address a source failure; it does not guarantee 24/7 uptime. Add process supervision, logs, connection alerts, backups of the playlist and configuration, and a tested restart procedure. Assign someone to respond to alerts and verify that recovery actually restored the stream.
- Before launch: test the primary list, fallback, output connection, and restart procedure.
- During operation: watch logs and connection status, and check that the stream is still advancing rather than repeating a failed or stale source.
- After a change: confirm playlist edits and configuration changes take effect as expected, and retain a recoverable copy of the working setup.
Account for YouTube’s live-stream rules
If you deliver the music as a YouTube Live video stream, YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it when content is identified. The platform also says that licensed content may still require the channel to be allowlisted by the relevant rights owner.

Contact each relevant rights holder about any required allowlisting before the broadcast. An allowlist is a platform-side measure for licensed content; it is not a substitute for obtaining the underlying permissions. A successful test stream does not establish that every track is cleared or that a later stream will avoid enforcement.
Liquidsoap’s current site describes a workflow that receives a live video feed, such as RTMP from OBS, and pushes output to YouTube Live. This is evidence of technical capability, not a guarantee of rights clearance or uninterrupted acceptance by YouTube.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Possible cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| No audio reaches the player | The automation output, audio server, or listener connection is not working. | Check Liquidsoap and server logs, verify the configured output connection, and test the stream URL in a compatible player. |
| The same track or sequence keeps returning | The list may be configured for ordered looping, or the shuffle behavior may permit repeats. | Review the selected rotation mode and test it with the actual playlist. Use ordered looping for a predictable cycle or a suitable shuffle configuration for varied order. |
| Playlist edits do not appear | The source may not reload automatically, or the reload interval may not have elapsed. | Check the playlist source and reload settings against the installed Liquidsoap version. Confirm that a change is picked up during a controlled test. |
| Playback stops when a file or list is unavailable | No usable fallback is configured, or the fallback source is also unavailable. | Configure and test a known-good fallback item or alternate list; inspect logs to identify the failed source. |
| YouTube interrupts or terminates the live stream | YouTube may have identified third-party content, or licensed content may not be allowlisted where required. | Review the platform notice, verify permissions for the identified material, and coordinate any required allowlisting with the rights owner. Do not assume a claim or allowlist supplies the original license. |
Choose infrastructure around your audience and workflow
For a website-based audio station, an audio server can provide a stream URL for a player. For YouTube, you need a video feed as well as a destination account. Compare the approaches by control, technical skill, audience discovery, responsibility for availability, bandwidth and encoding load, monetization rules, territory coverage, archive behavior, and how rights-holder requirements are handled.

The documentation does not establish a universal listener capacity, bitrate, or cheapest setup, and the right answer depends on your audience and delivery plan. Estimate requirements for the actual system you intend to operate rather than assuming a particular server size or encoding setting will fit every station.
Or let it run in the cloud
