You can use OBS to send a church worship feed to YouTube continuously, but a single 24/7 broadcast is not a dependable way to preserve a full replay: YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. Set up OBS and YouTube together, test the real audio and motion, and plan shorter sessions plus a local recording if the archive matters.
Know what a 24/7 stream will—and will not—do
OBS is the encoder: it sends your camera, audio, graphics, or prerecorded worship content to YouTube. YouTube Live Control Room creates and manages the viewer-facing broadcast. Both sides need to be configured, and the stream should be checked in YouTube’s preview before it goes public. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this workflow.
Continuous viewing and dependable replay are different goals. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. So if viewers need a replay, plan separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and record a local copy. A single always-on session should not be treated as a complete archive. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR.

That API detail is not a promise that one broadcast will be archived indefinitely or provide full DVR: the resource and an individual broadcast’s replay are different things. Check the channel, equipment, and people involved
Confirm YouTube live-streaming eligibility
- The channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days, according to YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- YouTube’s current help page lists a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. These are platform limits, not a target for a church setup.
- Allow time to enable live streaming and verify eligibility before the first service. Do not wait until just before a scheduled broadcast to discover the channel cannot go live.
Map the church’s existing audio and video path
List the camera or playback computer, the mixer or audio source, and the computer that will run OBS. Check how each source connects before buying anything. A camera may need a capture card to reach the computer; a mixer may have an output that can feed a compatible computer audio input or interface. An interface, capture card, or UPS can solve a particular connection or power problem, but none is universally required by YouTube or OBS. Confirm connector, operating-system, and device compatibility first.
For a continuous stream, assign an operator or rota to check sound, picture, and YouTube’s stream health; decide who responds if the computer, power, or internet fails; and decide whether backup internet or power is practical. These are operational safeguards, not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. OBS and YouTube do not remove the need to monitor a long-running broadcast.

Choose settings your upload connection can sustain
For ordinary worship video, start with 1080p at 30 frames per second rather than defaulting to 4K or a high frame rate. YouTube recommends selecting settings that the available connection can reliably sustain. Its current encoder guidance lists the following H.264 recommendations; they are platform recommendations, not a church-specific test result.
Recommended Free Tools
| Video and audio setting | YouTube recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1080p, 30 fps, H.264 video | 10 Mbps video bitrate |
| 1080p, 60 fps, H.264 video | 12 Mbps video bitrate |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; no more than 4 seconds |
| Stereo AAC audio | 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS recommended |
YouTube also lists H.265 and AV1 as supported codecs, up to 60 fps. For the straightforward OBS setup below, H.264 is the recommended starting choice. YouTube transcodes the incoming live video into formats for viewers, so sending a higher resolution is not automatically necessary. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions if you choose a different resolution, frame rate, or codec.

Leave upload capacity beyond the encoder’s selected bitrate rather than relying on a connection that only just meets it. Test the actual wired or wireless path the church will use, at the time and under the conditions the stream will run. A brief speed-test result is not a substitute for a representative OBS test with worship audio and picture movement.
Set up the YouTube broadcast and OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Choose to create or schedule an encoder stream. Add the title, visibility, and schedule appropriate to the church’s broadcast. For a first test, use private or unlisted visibility rather than announcing a public stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from YouTube. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to the channel. Do not show it on screen, include it in a public document, or share it with people who do not operate the broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before going live again.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If the selected service presents a server field or YouTube’s custom RTMPS connection details, use the server URL and key shown for that broadcast. Do not paste the key into a scene, title, or viewer-facing chat.
- Set video and output values in OBS. Under Settings > Video, choose 1920 × 1080 output at 30 fps for the recommended starting point. Under Settings > Output, use Advanced output mode if needed to set H.264, CBR, the bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution, and a two-second keyframe interval. Set stereo AAC audio to 128 kbps and the sample rate to 44.1 kHz where those controls are available. OBS versions and encoder hardware may label some options differently.
- Build a scene using the church’s actual sources. Add the camera or capture-device source and the intended audio input. For a prerecorded worship video, add a media source and enable looping if one video should repeat; for a playlist, configure a playlist-capable source and test the transition between items. Check that the stream does not accidentally include desktop notifications, private information, or silent gaps you did not intend.
- Start a test from OBS and check YouTube’s preview. In Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview and inspect the image, audio meters, and stream health before starting or announcing the public broadcast. Verify that the source is framed correctly, audio is audible without clipping, and the worship content has the expected motion and transitions.
- Start the broadcast only after the preview is right. Depending on the YouTube workflow selected, the stream may require a separate Go Live action in Live Control Room after OBS begins sending. Follow the on-screen status and confirm that viewers can see and hear the intended program.
For a baseline OBS configuration, the OBS Help Portal recommends starting with Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Treat its result as a starting point, not a substitute for matching YouTube’s settings and testing the church’s real connection. OBS explains that an increasing dropped-frames counter with a yellow or red connection indicator means the connection may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. See the OBS Help Portal.

Plan session turnover and local recordings
If replay is important, make each YouTube broadcast shorter than 12 hours and build a deliberate handoff between sessions. For example, the operator can end one broadcast, confirm the next broadcast is ready, then begin the next session. Viewers may experience a brief interruption; test the order in a private or unlisted run so the team knows which controls to use and when. Do not assume an OBS reconnect or a new scheduled event will preserve uninterrupted playback or a complete archive.

Clear worship music rights before going live
Do not assume that owning a song recording, having permission to perform a song in person, or holding a general worship license automatically covers a public live stream and its replay. Confirm that the church’s permissions cover the actual songs and arrangements, any sound recordings, the relevant territory, live transmission, and archived use. The applicable rights depend on the church’s circumstances; this article does not determine legal coverage.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If a match is detected and the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. If a church has licensed content, the rights owner may still need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist; a license alone does not necessarily prevent an interruption. A claim may also be made against an archived live video after the broadcast. Read YouTube’s pages on copyright issues with live streams and its livestream terms and conditions before using recorded or performed music.
Troubleshoot the problems most likely to stop the feed
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an encoder preview | OBS has not connected, or the server URL or stream key does not match the YouTube broadcast. | Check the OBS connection status and the exact server URL/key in Live Control Room. Re-enter the key privately; if it was exposed, reset it rather than continuing to use a compromised credential. |
| OBS dropped frames increase; connection square turns yellow or red | The connection to the destination is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. | Check the OBS connection indicator, reduce output demands if needed, and retest over the actual connection. Prefer a stable wired connection where practical; do not raise bitrate to fix a connection that is already dropping frames. |
| Picture is smooth but worship audio is missing or distorted | The wrong input is selected, the mixer feed is absent, levels are too high, or the audio format does not match the intended output. | Watch OBS audio meters while the service audio is playing; confirm the correct input and channel routing, adjust levels to avoid clipping, then inspect a test recording and YouTube preview. |
| Camera or media source is black or frozen | The capture device, source selection, file path, or source connection has failed. | Check the source in the OBS canvas and its properties; verify the camera/capture device is connected and the media file is available. Test transitions and any loop or playlist behavior before the public stream. |
| The stream is interrupted after music plays | YouTube may have detected third-party copyrighted content. | Check YouTube’s Live Control Room notice and address the rights issue with the relevant rights owner. Confirm any required channel allowlisting; do not assume restarting the encoder resolves the underlying claim. |
| There is no complete replay or rewind after a long broadcast | The session exceeded YouTube’s archive threshold, or DVR was limited or unavailable. | Use sessions shorter than 12 hours when YouTube replay matters, and maintain a tested local recording for a second copy. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep prerecorded worship videos playing on YouTube rather than stream a live camera or mixer feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home internet connection has to stay on. It streams to YouTube, not other platforms, and it does not go live from a camera.
