YouTube Live does not provide a dependable episode bookmark for a 24/7 broadcast. Its DVR can let a viewer resume after pausing, but YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. To recover the broadcast at the intended point after an encoder restart, store the current episode and playback position in your own playout workflow, then seek back to that checkpoint before sending video again. Give families a separate episode list or individual episode videos as a reliable way to choose what to watch.
What “resume at the right episode” means
There are two different kinds of continuity:
- Viewer continuity: a viewer leaves the player, closes the app, changes devices, or encounters an interruption and wants to return to the same point.
- Broadcast continuity: the stream source or encoder stops and restarts, and you want the outgoing program to continue from the correct episode and position.
YouTube documents pause-and-resume behavior while a viewer is watching a live stream. It does not document a durable, episode-aware bookmark that survives app closure, device changes, a broadcaster restart, or a new live event. A creator-controlled checkpoint can solve the broadcast-side problem; it cannot guarantee that every viewer’s YouTube player will reopen at that point.
Why YouTube Live DVR is not enough for a 24/7 stream
YouTube says viewers can pause and rewind a live stream, and that playback continues from where they paused when they resume. That describes DVR behavior within the live event, not a persistent episode marker. YouTube also warns that DVR capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the live stream began, and Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions may have lower DVR limits. YouTube’s DVR help page explains these limits.

Archives are a separate issue. YouTube says it can automatically archive a live stream if it is less than 12 hours, and that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. An archive is useful for later viewing, but it is not a promise that the live player will resume at the same episode or position. Build episode recovery into your playout workflow
The dependable creator-side approach is to keep the intended episode order and playback checkpoint outside the streaming process. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a stream URL and stream key; its documented controls do not include an episode queue or resume checkpoint. Treat the following as a playout-system design recommendation, not a YouTube feature.
1. Create a deterministic episode manifest
List episodes in their intended order using stable identifiers, such as filenames or IDs, and record each episode’s duration. Avoid depending solely on a manually positioned timeline or an undocumented assumption about where a playlist will restart. The manifest should make clear which episode follows the current one.

2. Persist the current episode and position
Store at least the current episode ID and its playback offset somewhere that survives a process or machine restart. Update the checkpoint periodically and whenever an episode changes. How often to save it depends on how much replay or skipped material is acceptable after a failure; the sources do not prescribe an interval.

- Read the saved episode ID and offset when the playout process starts.
- Load that episode and seek to the saved offset in the playout source.
- Confirm that the source is producing the intended episode and position.
- Connect the encoder to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key in the encoder workflow, then verify the live output in YouTube Studio.
Do not assume that reconnecting the encoder will restore the intended point automatically. The playout system needs to recover its own state before it sends the feed again.

4. Keep a local recording
Record the outgoing program locally if you need an independent copy for recovery or later review. YouTube specifically recommends a local archive backup, and says streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Keep the recording process separate enough that a YouTube disconnect does not also erase the only copy of what was broadcast.
5. Give viewers an episode-level alternative
Publish individual episodes as standard videos or provide a clearly labeled episode playlist or index. This lets a caregiver choose a named episode rather than searching through a long live timeline. Shorter, clearly labeled live sessions are another option when session archives matter; YouTube’s under-12-hour archive guidance does not establish that a new session preserves a viewer’s position from the previous one.

Choose a format that fits the viewing experience

For children’s programming, a separate episode index is a useful safety net even if you also run a continuous stream. It gives caregivers a clear choice and avoids treating a long live player as the only way to find a particular episode.
Distinguish creator-side restarts from viewer-side pauses
YouTube may show “Video paused. Continue watching?” when autoplay is on and playback has been uninterrupted for 30 minutes on mobile, 60 minutes on web, or 180 minutes on TV. This is a viewer-side inactivity prompt, not evidence that the encoder skipped an episode. The timing is described in YouTube’s Continue watching help page; the page does not display a publication year.

YouTube Kids has a different related-video autoplay feature. It is off by default; if enabled, it chooses another related video based on the child’s viewing history, and a parent can disable it in Family Center. That feature does not promise to continue the creator’s intended episode sequence inside a live stream. Likewise, watch history can make recently watched videos easier to find when enabled, but YouTube does not describe it as a bookmark for a live episode position. Troubleshoot the common failure cases
The broadcast restarts at the beginning of an episode
- Likely cause: the playout process has no persisted offset, or it saves progress only at episode boundaries.
- Fix: persist both the episode ID and playback offset periodically, then restore and seek before reconnecting to YouTube.
The broadcast resumes in the wrong episode
- Likely cause: episode order depends on a manually managed timeline or a playlist state that is not restored consistently.
- Fix: use an explicit ordered manifest with stable episode identifiers; checkpoint transitions as well as playback position.
A viewer returns and cannot find the old live position
- Likely cause: the viewer is treating DVR as a permanent bookmark, or the stream has exceeded a duration where DVR is dependable.
- Fix: provide individual episode videos or a labeled episode index. Test the actual devices and apps your audience uses; YouTube notes lower DVR limits on Apple TV, AirPlay, and older app versions.
The stream has no replay archive
- Likely cause: the live event exceeded 12 hours; YouTube says such a stream may not be captured at all.
- Fix: keep a local recording and consider shorter sessions if YouTube’s automatic archive is important to your workflow.
A child sees “Continue watching?” while the live stream is still running
- Likely cause: the YouTube player’s inactivity prompt.
- Fix: explain that the prompt is on the viewer’s device and does not by itself indicate a broadcast restart. The documented thresholds with autoplay on are 30 minutes on mobile, 60 on web, and 180 on TV.
