To run brown noise continuously on YouTube, prepare an original or properly licensed audio loop and a visual, connect them to a YouTube Live stream through an encoder, then keep that encoder running. A local encoder such as OBS needs a computer and internet connection that stay on; a cloud service can run the stream without your home computer. First verify your channel and enable live streaming—YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube says live streamers must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming basics.
- Live streaming enabled on the channel. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch: YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- A brown-noise recording and image or video that you have the rights to use.
- An encoder (software, cloud service, or hardware) and a reliable way to send its video and audio to YouTube.
Prepare the brown-noise audio and visual
Use a recording you made yourself or have permission to stream. The sound category alone does not establish that a particular recording is free of copyright claims: a recording, sample, arrangement, or accompanying visual can have a rights owner. Keep source files and license or permission records, and avoid using commercial music, stock visuals, or another channel’s loop without the necessary rights. YouTube’s encoder guide explains the connection process, but it does not establish the copyright status of a specific brown-noise recording.
A static image or gentle visual loop is usually enough for an audio-led stream and can reduce encoding complexity. Use a visual that remains clear on phones and TVs, and make the title and description accurately describe the sound. Test the full loop for clicks, abrupt volume changes, and gaps where it repeats.

YouTube describes encoders as software or standalone hardware and also lists cloud options in its encoder setup guide. You do not need to buy a camera or microphone just to broadcast an existing loop. A dedicated computer is optional if you choose local hosting; first consider whether a computer you already own can handle the job. Set up a local OBS stream
- Enable live streaming. Verify your channel and enable live streaming in advance; allow up to 24 hours for first-time access.
- Create the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create a stream or schedule it in Live Control Room.
- Copy the connection details. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into OBS’s YouTube or RTMP stream settings. Use RTMPS when available for encrypted delivery. Treat the stream key as a password: anyone with it may be able to connect an encoder to your stream.
- Add the visual and audio. In OBS, add your image or loop as a visual source and the brown-noise file as an audio source. Configure the audio to repeat, then check that its meter moves and that the loop joins cleanly.
- Set output settings and start sending. Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Start the stream from OBS and wait for YouTube’s preview and health indicators in Live Control Room.
- Confirm the broadcast. If you scheduled the stream, return at the scheduled time, check the preview, and follow YouTube’s prompt to go live. Monitor the broadcast at launch and after changes to the encoder, network, or source.
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). For stereo audio, YouTube specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its general H.264 recommendations list 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30, but those are general live-video figures, not a brown-noise preset. A static image may not need that much video bitrate; choose a sustainable setting and prioritize a stable stream.
Test the complete stream before leaving it unattended
- Listen through the live preview, not only the source file. Check for a clean loop boundary, consistent level, unwanted silence, distortion, or clicks.
- Confirm the picture is visible and the stream health indicators show no problem in Live Control Room.
- Test with the same audio and visual motion planned for the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream-health messages in its encoder guide.
- After changing the network, source, or encoder settings, check the preview and audio again before relying on the stream.
- Keep your stream key private. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
Understand the 24/7 replay limitation
Continuous live availability is not the same as one complete archived replay. YouTube Help, in “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder,” says that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived: YouTube’s encoder setup guide. Its page does not promise that a 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If a full replay matters, plan a separate recording or shorter sessions, and confirm YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive workaround.

Copyright, monetization, and sleep claims
Use audio and visuals you own or are licensed to stream. No blanket copyright-free status can be inferred from the fact that the audio is brown noise; the rights status depends on the particular recording and assets. YouTube’s encoder guide says YouTube Partner Program membership is required to monetize a live stream, but that is an eligibility condition, not a guarantee that a repetitive noise stream will pass monetization review. Avoid promising revenue or claiming that brown noise treats a condition or is proven to improve sleep. Describe it as ambient sound for viewers who choose to listen.
Troubleshooting common problems
