Stay connected and purposeful by building enjoyable contact into your routine, choosing activities that matter to you, and removing practical barriers such as transport, hearing, vision, mobility, or technology access. Start with one recurring connection—such as a weekly call, walk, class, hobby session, or volunteer shift—then adjust it to your energy and interests. Connection is not one-size-fits-all: living alone does not automatically mean you are lonely, and being surrounded by people does not guarantee that you feel understood.
Loneliness and social isolation are different
Loneliness is the distressing feeling that your relationships or contact are not as meaningful or sufficient as you want. Social isolation describes having limited contact, relationships, or practical support. They can occur separately: someone may have frequent social contact but feel lonely, while another person may live alone and feel content and well supported.
The distinction matters because the useful response depends on the problem. If the issue is a lack of opportunities, transport, or communication access, adding practical support may help. If you are meeting people but still feel disconnected, the better starting point may be identifying what kind of relationship or conversation feels meaningful. The World Health Organization (WHO) discusses both conditions and emphasizes that risk varies with circumstances rather than age alone: WHO’s overview of social isolation and loneliness among older people.
Why connection can become harder later in life
Retirement, moving home, the death of a partner or friend, caregiving changes, and fewer daily encounters can alter a person’s social routine. Health changes, disability, memory challenges, hearing or vision loss, and difficulty getting around can make existing relationships harder to maintain. Transportation limitations may prevent attendance even when a person wants to participate.

These are not personal failures. Access depends on the surrounding environment as well as individual effort. The WHO identifies transportation, accessible community spaces, and information and communication technologies as factors that shape participation. Its 2021 advocacy brief, produced with UN-DESA, ITU, and UN Women, places social connection within the broader UN Decade of Healthy Ageing strategy: Social isolation and loneliness among older people.
Social isolation and loneliness are associated with health concerns, including depression and anxiety, but an association is not proof that one activity prevents a disease. The CDC’s guidance describes population-level risks, not an individual diagnosis: Health Effects of Social Isolation and Loneliness (published and reviewed May 15, 2024).
Build a sustainable connection routine
A plan works best when it is specific, repeatable, and shaped around what you actually enjoy. You do not need a packed calendar. One reliable point of contact can be a useful beginning.

- Conversation: a phone call, video chat, or in-person visit with someone you already know.
- Shared activity: a class, hobby group, walking group, choir, or community activity where conversation happens naturally.
- Contribution: volunteering or helping another person in a role that matches your interests and available energy.
- Everyday companionship: a regular walk, meal, faith or community gathering, or time with loved ones.
Ask yourself, “Do I want one-to-one conversation, a small group, a larger gathering, or an activity where talking is optional?” That answer helps you choose an approach that feels inviting rather than burdensome.
2. Put one recurring contact on the calendar
Turn an intention into a recurring appointment. Agree on a day and time for a call, video chat, walk, meal, or activity. A calendar reminder can help both people remember. If a weekly plan is too demanding, use a less frequent schedule; the important feature is that it is predictable and realistic, not that it meets a universal quota. NIA recommends regular calls, video chats, and plans with friends or family in its tips for staying connected.
3. Make the first step easy to accept
Offer a concrete invitation rather than “We should get together sometime.” For example: “Would you like to call for 20 minutes on Tuesday afternoon?” or “Could we walk together after lunch on Saturday?” Give the other person an easy way to suggest another time. If speaking on the phone is tiring, try a shorter call, text exchange, video chat, or visit with a shared task.
4. Review the routine after a few attempts
Notice what leaves you energized, what feels meaningful, and what creates strain. Adjust the time, location, length, or format. A plan that is enjoyable and accessible is more likely to continue than one chosen only because it appears socially productive.

Reconnect with people you already know
Existing relationships often offer the lowest barrier to entry. Make a list of relatives, friends, former colleagues, neighbors, or members of groups you once attended. You do not need to restart every relationship; select one or two people with whom contact feels welcome.
- Send a short message referring to a shared memory or current interest.
- Suggest a regular phone call or video chat.
- Invite someone to combine contact with an ordinary task, such as a walk, meal, shopping trip, or appointment.
- If distance makes visits difficult, agree on a video or telephone routine and test the setup before the first scheduled call.
Video is optional, not automatically better. A phone call may be easier for someone with limited bandwidth, visual fatigue, or unfamiliarity with a camera. Choose the format that allows both people to participate comfortably.
Meet people through shared interests
Activities give people something to talk about and reduce the pressure to invent conversation from nothing. NIA describes enjoyable activities, classes, hobbies, and community participation as ways to support engagement: Participating in Activities You Enjoy As You Age.
Classes and hobby groups
Consider a class or group connected with an interest you already have, or one you have wanted to try. Examples include arts, music, gardening, writing, languages, cooking, technology, or discussion groups. Ask about class size, accessibility, seating, breaks, hearing support, and whether beginners are welcome before committing.

Walking and movement groups
A walking group can combine light activity with repeated contact. Match the route and pace to your mobility. A flat, well-lit route with places to rest may be more suitable than a faster or longer walk. If outdoor walking is impractical, ask whether a community center offers an indoor route or seated activity.
Choirs, community and faith groups
Groups organized around music, neighborhood interests, culture, or faith can provide a recurring social setting. You can participate at the level that suits you: attending, helping with a task, or taking a more active role. Ask whether the venue has accessible entrances, restrooms, lighting, sound levels, and seating.
Online groups
Online communities may be useful when travel, health, or geography limits in-person options. Look for clear schedules, moderation, and communication formats that work with your hearing, vision, and device. An online group can complement—not necessarily replace—in-person or voice contact, depending on what feels meaningful to you.

Use volunteering to combine contact and purpose
Volunteering can provide a role, a reason to show up, and contact with people who share an objective. Match the commitment to your energy, schedule, mobility, and interests. Possibilities may include welcoming visitors, reading with children, supporting a food program, helping at a community event, mentoring, administrative work, or remote assistance.

Ask about training, physical requirements, transport, supervision, and what happens if you need to cancel. A role that is too demanding can create stress rather than meaning.
The National Institute on Aging (NIA) states: “For example, helping others through volunteering helps you feel less lonely and allows you to have a sense of mission and purpose in life, which is linked to better health.” This is official guidance, not a guarantee that volunteering will resolve loneliness or produce a particular health outcome. Find purpose after retirement or another major transition
Purpose is personal. It may come from creating something, caring for someone, learning, contributing, maintaining a tradition, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing a long-delayed interest. Retirement does not require replacing paid work with one equivalent role; it is an opportunity to decide which activities deserve your time now.
Map what matters
Write down moments when you feel useful, absorbed, connected, or proud. Look for themes: teaching, making, organizing, encouraging, exploring, preserving family history, or caring for nature. Then choose a small experiment that expresses one theme.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

If learning matters, enroll in a class or schedule a weekly practice session. If helping matters, investigate a volunteer role. If family matters, create a regular meal or call. If creativity matters, set a modest project with a visible next step. Purpose is easier to sustain when it has a time, place, and action attached to it.
Expect purpose to change
Energy, health, finances, and responsibilities can change. A role that once fit may no longer be practical. Adapt the activity rather than treating the change as a personal defeat: teach instead of lifting, call instead of traveling, or participate for a shorter period.

Compare options by fit, not by popularity
No single activity has been established as best for every older adult. Use the following questions to choose among realistic options.
| Option | What it can provide | Questions to check |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or video contact | Regular conversation with people already known | Is the device, connection, hearing support, and schedule workable? |
| Class or hobby group | Shared interest and repeated opportunities to meet people | Are beginners welcomed? Is the venue accessible and affordable? |
| Walking or movement group | Companionship around a shared activity | Does the pace, route, seating, and transport match your mobility? |
| Community, choir, or faith group | Recurring group contact and possible roles | Can you hear, see, enter, and participate comfortably? |
| Volunteering | Contribution, structure, contact, and a possible sense of mission | What are the physical demands, training, time commitment, and cancellation rules? |
| Online group | Connection when distance or travel limits in-person participation | Is the platform usable with your technology and accessibility needs, and is the group moderated? |
Also consider cost, travel time, transportation, desired group size, interaction level, and whether the activity creates recurring contact. WHO’s current topic page discusses these environmental and access factors: Reducing social isolation and loneliness among older people.
Remove common access barriers
Transportation
Ask the organizer about public transport, accessible parking, volunteer drivers, community transport, or remote participation. Combine errands with social plans when appropriate, but do not make attendance dependent on a journey that is unsafe or exhausting.
Hearing and vision
Request a quieter room, good lighting, written instructions, captions, a microphone, or seating near the speaker. For video calls, check caption availability, screen size, audio volume, and whether materials can be enlarged. Tell organizers what adjustment would help; a specific request is easier to act on than a general statement that access is difficult.
Mobility, stamina, and pain
Look for step-free entrances, nearby restrooms, seating, breaks, and flexible attendance. A shorter session or remote role may preserve participation when a full event is too demanding.
Memory and cognitive load
Use written reminders, simple directions, a consistent location, and a contact person who can confirm details. Repeated formats can reduce the effort of remembering what happens next.
Technology
If you need a device for scheduled video chats, choose one based on ease of use, accessibility features, connection quality, and budget. The public-health guidance recommends video chats as one possible way to stay connected; it does not endorse a particular device or show that purchasing one reduces loneliness. Ask a trusted person, library, community center, or service provider for setup help if needed.

When loneliness persists despite social contact
If you attend activities but still feel disconnected, slow down and identify what is missing. You may want deeper one-to-one conversation, a smaller group, more continuity, or relationships based on a particular interest. Tell someone you trust, “I am seeing people, but I still feel alone,” rather than assuming that more events are the answer.
Listen to yourself without dismissing the feeling or prescribing a busy schedule. Ask what kind of contact feels meaningful and what makes participation difficult. WHO lists befriending, support or community groups, social-skills training, and cognitive behavioural therapy among intervention types; the appropriate choice depends on the person and local services. See WHO’s 2025 Commission report, From loneliness to social connection: charting a path to healthier societies, for the broader policy and intervention context.
Know when to seek professional help
Social activities are not a substitute for healthcare. Speak with an appropriate health professional or local support service if loneliness is persistent, causes significant distress, or accompanies depression, anxiety, sleep or appetite changes, or difficulty functioning. The CDC identifies depression, anxiety, suicidality, and self-harm among potential concerns associated with social isolation and loneliness; those are risk categories, not a diagnosis of any individual.
Recommended Free Tools
If you may harm yourself or are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or an urgent crisis service now. If someone tells you they are considering self-harm, stay with them when possible, listen without judgment, and seek urgent professional help rather than trying to solve the situation with an activity invitation.
A practical four-week starting plan
- Week 1 — Choose one person and one interest. Contact someone you already know and write down an activity you would genuinely like to try.
- Week 2 — Make one recurring plan. Schedule a call, visit, walk, class, group meeting, or volunteer introduction. Confirm transport and accessibility before the date.
- Week 3 — Add a second pathway. If the first plan is comfortable, try a shared-interest group or a small contribution to others. If it is not, change the format rather than abandoning connection altogether.
- Week 4 — Adjust for fit. Keep what feels meaningful, shorten or adapt what is tiring, and ask for an access change where needed. Record the next date before the current contact ends.
This is a flexible experiment, not a required schedule. Some people will prefer frequent contact; others will want fewer, deeper interactions. Your goal is a sustainable pattern that respects your preferences, health, resources, and relationships.
What population estimates can—and cannot—tell you
WHO’s current topic page reports that around 16% of people worldwide experience loneliness and that around 11.8% of older people experience loneliness. These are estimates presented by WHO; the page’s search extract does not identify the survey year underlying the overall figures, so they should not be read as a 2026 survey result or as a precise measure of any individual’s experience. See the WHO topic page for its current framing.
Population figures explain why connection deserves attention, but they cannot tell you which activity will work for you or whether living alone is a problem in your circumstances. Use them as context, then make decisions based on your own preferences, access, and wellbeing.
