Use the device’s own care instructions and your prosthetist’s schedule; do not treat it like a bicycle you can tune at home. You can safely check your skin, look for visible changes or debris, and clean permitted surfaces as directed. Stop wearing it and contact your prosthetist if you find a wound, persistent redness, new instability, unusual noise, or signs of component wear. General prosthesis-care guidance does not establish a bicycle-parts-specific repair procedure.

Before you put it on: check your skin and the prosthesis

Inspect the residual limb

Look for redness, irritation, swelling, abrasions, blisters, or open areas before donning the prosthesis. If you have reduced sensation or circulation problems, use both sight and touch where appropriate, or ask a caregiver to help check areas you may not feel clearly. If you find a blister or open area, do not put the prosthesis back on; contact your prosthetist or care team. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s lower-limb prosthesis care guidance and Gillette Children’s prosthesis-care guidance both advise attention to skin problems.

Look over the device without taking it apart

Visually check for cracks, bent or displaced pieces, corrosion, dirt or sand, and connections that look loose or different from their usual position. Check straps, sleeves, or suspension parts only as their instructions describe. Do not loosen fasteners to investigate, test a suspected joint, or try to identify a mechanical fault by dismantling the assembly. The exact bicycle parts and their inspection points depend on the build; there is no established bicycle-limb user torque check or universal list of joints to inspect.

After wearing it: watch for skin and movement changes

Recheck the skin

Remove the prosthesis and look at the skin again. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab advises stopping use and contacting the prosthetist or physician if redness remains for more than 15–20 minutes after removal. Stop use and report abrasions or wounds. New pain, a socket that feels unusually tight or loose, instability, or a change in walking pattern are reasons to contact the prosthetist rather than trying to compensate by adjusting the device. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab and LimbPower’s cycling guide for amputees describe these kinds of fit and use concerns.

Notice sound, dust, and visible wear

Stop using the prosthesis and contact your prosthetist if it makes a new or unusual sound or if you see black or metallic dust. These signs can warrant professional assessment; they do not identify a cause you should diagnose or repair at home. Do not search for the source by loosening bicycle-style fasteners. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s guidance specifically identifies unusual sounds and black or metallic dust as reasons to stop and seek help.

Clean only as the device instructions permit

General guidance from Shirley Ryan AbilityLab recommends cleaning the socket interior daily with mild soap and water and says not to submerge it. Dry and care for liners, socks, sleeves, and other interfaces according to their own product instructions. Ottobock also recommends daily socket and liner care, avoiding high heat, and not disassembling the prosthesis. For a mixed-material build, do not assume that bicycle-like hardware or finishes tolerate water, solvents, oil, or household cleaners. Keep dirt, sand, and debris off the prosthesis, and do not get it wet unless the manufacturer says it is designed for that. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, Ottobock, and LimbPower offer general care advice, but the exact materials and cleaning directions for this build are not established.

When to stop using it and get professional help

  • Skin injury: A blister or open area means do not put the prosthesis back on; report it to your prosthetist or care team. Persistent redness, abrasions, or wounds also warrant stopping use and contacting them.
  • Mechanical warning signs: Stop using it if you find visible damage, a loose-looking or displaced part, unusual noise, or black or metallic dust. Ask the prosthetist to assess it rather than attempting a repair.
  • Changed fit or function: New pain, instability, an unusually tight or loose socket, or a changed walking pattern should be raised with your prosthetist.

Gillette Children’s says assembled prosthetic components should only be changed by a qualified prosthetist. EnableNSW advises against modifying or repairing the prosthesis yourself and directs maintenance and repairs through an accredited manufacturer via the prosthetist. See Gillette Children’s and EnableNSW’s prosthetic limb service guidance.

Ask the builder or prosthetist for the device-specific schedule

Before relying on routine checks alone, ask the builder or your prosthetist for the inspection intervals, component limits, cleaning products, exposure limits, and replacement schedule for this particular prosthesis. Shirley Ryan AbilityLab’s general guidance says, “Schedule annual checkups for mechanical parts and do not adjust components yourself.” It is a general recommendation, not a substitute for the schedule set for your device.

A historical professional paper describes an “Adjustable Bicycle Limb,” but it is not a current service manual and does not validate home adjustment of the device in this article. The AAOP-hosted paper should not be used as repair instructions. In Great Britain, the MHRA’s medical-device guidance, updated July 20, 2026, provides regulatory context for external prosthetic devices; it does not establish that any particular custom bicycle-parts build complies with requirements or is unsafe.
