If you already have an auto loan, start by getting your lender’s current payoff quote and asking the servicer about payment relief. Then compare refinance offers by APR, fees, term, and total cost—not just the monthly payment. A longer loan can lower the bill now but cost more overall, while selling or trading down only helps if the vehicle’s value and loan payoff make the numbers work.

First, find out what your current loan will take to pay off

Before comparing options, contact your servicer and ask for your current payoff amount, APR, number of payments remaining, next due date, and whether the contract has a prepayment penalty. Check the loan agreement as well. The payoff quote may differ from the balance on your statement because interest or fees can accrue between statements.

Use the lender’s current payoff figure when comparing a refinance or sale. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that your contract and state law govern early payoff, and that refinancing pays off the existing loan, so a penalty could affect the calculation: CFPB guidance on paying off a loan early.

Ask your current lender about payment relief

If a payment is becoming difficult, contact the servicer promptly and ask what options are available. Depending on your situation and the lender’s policies, relief might include changing the due date, setting up a plan to catch up on missed amounts, or extending a payment. These options have different effects: a due-date change can help align the bill with your income, while an extension generally defers a payment rather than erasing it.

An extension may give you short-term breathing room, but interest can continue to accrue and deferred payments may be added at the end of the loan. The CFPB’s consumer guidance on what to do if you can’t make your car payments recommends contacting the lender to discuss available options.

Compare refinance offers by cost, not just payment

Refinancing replaces your existing loan with a new one that pays it off. A lower payment may result from a lower APR, a longer repayment term, or both, but not every borrower will qualify for a lower rate. Ask your current lender and credible banks or credit unions for written quotes, then compare the full terms.

  • How long you will owe on the vehicle, relative to its likely value and how long you expect to keep it

A longer term can make a monthly payment smaller while increasing total interest and extending the time you could owe more than the vehicle is worth. The CFPB puts the trade-off plainly: “While a longer loan can reduce your monthly payment, you’ll end up paying more interest over the life of your loan.” See its guidance on what to consider when refinancing an auto loan and shopping for an auto loan.

A CFPB illustration shows why payment alone can mislead: for a sample $20,000 loan at 4.75%, the agency calculated $597 per month and $1,498 total interest over three years, versus $320 per month and $3,024 total interest over six years. The figures are rounded and come from the CFPB’s 2023 example; they are not a current rate quote or a prediction of what refinancing will cost you.

The FTC likewise advises consumers not to focus only on the monthly payment: the total paid depends on the negotiated vehicle price, APR, and loan length. Its guidance is available at Buying a new or used car.

Check the car’s value before selling or trading it

If the car no longer fits your budget, selling it or moving to a less expensive vehicle may be worth considering. First get a current payoff quote, then estimate the vehicle’s value using realistic sale or trade-in figures. If the payoff is greater than the value, the difference is negative equity.

Be cautious about rolling negative equity into a replacement-car loan: it increases the new amount financed and may also mean a longer term or higher payment. Compare the total amount financed and cost of the replacement loan, not only the proposed monthly bill. The CFPB explains how to trade in a car that still has a loan.

Watch for auto-refinance scams

Be wary of companies that promise to lower your payment in exchange for an upfront “enrollment” fee or tell you to stop paying your lender. Contact your servicer directly, keep following your existing contract unless a valid written change is in place, and verify any replacement lender before sending money or sharing sensitive information. The FTC describes warning signs in its guidance on refinancing your auto loan.
