To pay less credit-card interest, reduce your balance sooner, pay more than the minimum when you can, and direct extra payments toward the balance with the highest APR. You can also ask your issuer to review your rate or consider a balance transfer—but compare its fee, promotional deadline, and post-promotion APR before moving debt. A 0% transfer offer may not apply to new purchases.
Why paying earlier can reduce interest
Many issuers calculate interest daily using your average daily balance. A payment that lowers your balance earlier can therefore reduce the amount on which interest accrues. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) puts it simply: “The sooner you pay all or part of your balance, the less interest you pay.” CFPB: Credit cards
When possible, pay more than the minimum and make the payment before the due date. Your statement and card agreement explain how your issuer calculates interest and when payments are credited.

How to direct payments across balances
A card may show separate balances with different APRs—for example, purchases, balance transfers, or cash advances. Generally, the portion of a payment above the required minimum must go first to the balance with the highest APR. The issuer generally controls how the minimum-payment portion is allocated. Check your statement for the balances and rates attached to your account. CFPB: How credit card companies allocate payments

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
If you can pay extra, this rule can help reduce the most expensive balance first. It does not necessarily direct extra payments to a deferred-interest balance, which can create a separate deadline risk.
Ask your issuer for a lower rate or payment arrangement
Call the number on your card and ask whether the issuer will review your APR. If payments have become difficult, explain your situation and ask about a hardship arrangement, including its duration, payment terms, and effect on the account. Terms depend on the issuer; get any agreed terms in writing. CFPB: Can my credit card company change my interest rate?

Some federal protections apply to rate increases. Existing balances generally cannot have their rates raised except in specified circumstances, such as a variable index increase, an expired temporary promotional rate, a payment more than 60 days late, or certain outcomes under a hardship arrangement. Certain rate changes require 45 days’ advance notice. If your rate increased after notice, the issuer may have to review it at least every six months. If a penalty rate followed a payment more than 60 days late, six consecutive on-time minimum payments require restoration of the prior rate. The details and exceptions matter, so consult the CFPB’s explanation and your card agreement. CFPB: Rate-change protections CFPB: Late credit card payments
Decide whether a balance transfer is worth it
A balance transfer can lower interest if the savings during the promotional period exceed the fee and you can repay the balance before the promotional APR ends. Compare the offer’s terms against your realistic payoff plan; do not assume you will qualify for the advertised rate or transfer the full amount you want.

| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Transfer fee | An upfront cost reduces the interest savings. In a CFPB report published in December 2025, the average balance-transfer fee at the 25 largest issuers was 4.3% for balances transferred in the second half of 2024; the average minimum fee was $5.51. The reported average percentage fee was 3.9% in 2022. These historical figures do not establish the fee on a current offer. CFPB: The consumer credit card market |
| Promotional APR and duration | Estimate whether your planned payments can clear the transferred balance before the promotion ends. |
| APR after promotion | Any amount left generally moves to the regular rate when the promotional period expires. |
| Transfer limit and eligibility | The issuer may approve a lower limit than the debt you want to move, or may not approve you for the offer. |
| Payment allocation and purchase grace period | Check how payments are allocated and whether new purchases will accrue interest while you carry the transferred balance. |
For a rough comparison, estimate the interest you expect to avoid during the promotion, then subtract the transfer fee. This is only an estimate: the result depends on the balance, payment timing, APRs, and account terms. CFPB: Balance transfers
Keep new purchases separate from a transferred balance
A promotional APR on transferred debt may not cover purchases. If you carry a balance, new purchases may begin accruing interest from the transaction date because the grace period may not apply unless you pay the full balance as required. Watch for deferred-interest deadlines and residual interest
Deferred interest is not the same as a 0% APR promotion
With a deferred-interest offer, interest may have accrued even while it was not charged. If you do not pay the balance in full by the stated deadline, that accrued interest may be added. When a card has multiple APR balances, payments above the minimum generally go to the highest-APR balance, which may leave the deferred-interest amount unpaid. Ask the issuer whether it will direct extra payments to that balance, and confirm the payoff deadline and amount. CFPB: Deferred interest
