To lower electricity use without stopping your church’s nonstop YouTube stream, reduce power used by the display and unnecessary background activity, keep the PC awake while the encoder is live, and measure the whole setup before and after each change. Make one change at a time during a controlled test and verify continuity and stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. There is no reliable universal figure for how many watts these changes will save; results depend on your equipment and workload.
Which power settings can you change without stopping the stream?
On a Windows 11 PC, start with the display and power mode. The encoder needs to keep running, but the monitor does not necessarily need to stay on. Windows setting names and availability can vary by device.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Choose Best Power Efficiency under Power mode if that option is available. Microsoft says this mode limits background activity.
- Set the display to turn off after a suitable period. This is separate from putting the PC to sleep.
- Make sure the sleep timer will not interrupt the broadcast. For a dedicated streaming PC, leave sleep disabled during the continuous stream if needed.
- Apply one change at a time, then confirm the encoder remains active and the stream is still healthy in YouTube Live Control Room.
Microsoft documents Windows power controls, but they do not guarantee that every PC and encoder combination will behave identically when the screen turns off. Test your specific setup before relying on it unattended. Microsoft’s Windows power-mode guidance and screen and sleep settings guidance describe these controls.

How should you choose YouTube stream settings?
Use the lowest resolution and frame rate that still give viewers an acceptable picture. A fixed pulpit shot may have different image needs from a service with frequent camera movement, but available guidance does not quantify the electricity difference between those workloads. Do not assume lowering quality saves a particular number of watts.

- Consider what viewers need to see, how much motion is in the scene, the reliability of the church’s upload connection, and whether the encoder remains stable.
- Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance before changing settings. It covers H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate.
- For example, YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists 2–6 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at 30 fps. This is a bitrate recommendation, not an estimate of electricity use.
- Test representative audio and motion, preview the stream, and monitor its health after changing resolution, frame rate, or codec. Use YouTube’s published requirements for bitrate and keyframes rather than guessing. YouTube’s live encoder settings are the current reference and may change.
How to measure actual electricity use
Measure rather than infer savings from a setting change. A plug-in electricity usage meter or wall watt meter can measure the equipment connected through it; no particular model is established here. Decide whether the reading should include only the PC or also its display and other peripherals, then keep that configuration consistent.
- Record a baseline with the stream running normally. Let the PC reach a stable state first.
- Measure over a useful, repeatable interval. Record power in watts and, if the meter supports it, accumulated energy in kWh.
- Change one setting, keep the stream workload and connected equipment the same, and measure again for the same length of time.
- Repeat if readings vary, and confirm stream continuity and health during each test.
Microsoft’s energy-efficiency documentation discusses stabilizing a system before measurement and reports power demand for idle, sleep, and off states. Those states are not equivalent to a PC encoding a live stream, so they cannot supply a promised saving for this use case. Microsoft’s powercfg documentation describes tools for managing power plans and analyzing energy efficiency; it does not prescribe a universal continuous-stream setting.

How to estimate the cost impact
Use the measured change in kWh and your electricity tariff. The relevant comparison is the energy consumed by the same equipment over comparable periods, not an assumed percentage reduction. Your result depends on the PC, GPU and encoder workload, display, stream settings, operating schedule, and local rate. No supported source establishes a universal watts-saved, kWh-saved, or bill-saved figure for a nonstop church stream on a PC.

- The stream stops when the PC is idle: Check whether Windows sleep or another power control is suspending the PC. Keep sleep disabled during the broadcast, test again, and verify the stream in Live Control Room.
- The screen turns off and the encoder stops: Some system components may behave differently with the display off. Restore the previous screen setting, confirm the stream, then test a different screen-off interval or configuration before leaving it unattended.
- The stream becomes unstable after changing quality: Restore the last stable resolution, frame rate, codec, or bitrate. Check YouTube’s current encoder guidance and test again with representative service content.
- The meter shows little or no change: Confirm it measures the intended equipment, compare equal-duration periods after the PC stabilizes, and keep stream content and settings consistent. A display-only change may not produce a large whole-system difference.
Or let it run in the cloud
