To lower electricity costs for a 24/7 YouTube stream in India, measure the average wall power used by the complete setup, calculate its kilowatt-hours, and apply the rate and bill adjustments on your own electricity bill. Then change one streaming or equipment setting at a time and check both the stream and the meter. There is no reliable universal figure for what an Indian streaming setup consumes or costs: the result depends on your equipment and local tariff.
Measure the whole setup while it is streaming
Use the average input draw in watts during ordinary streaming—not the wattage printed on the computer’s power supply, which describes its capacity rather than its actual consumption. A plug-in energy meter that reports watts and accumulated kWh can provide a practical reading. Confirm that it fits your local outlet and is rated for the connected load. The meter measures consumption; it does not reduce it.
Include the devices you want counted in your estimate: the streaming computer or encoder, a display if it stays on, networking equipment, capture devices and dedicated cooling. For a meaningful before-and-after comparison, keep the scene, stream settings, operating hours and other conditions as similar as possible.

- Daily energy: watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day.
- 30-day planning month: watts × 720 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per month, or watts × 0.72.
The 720-hour month is a planning assumption for continuous operation, not a measured usage statistic. For example, if a meter showed an average of 100 W, the arithmetic would be 2.4 kWh per day and 72 kWh over 30 days. That is an illustration only, not a typical stream’s power draw.
To estimate the variable energy charge, multiply the calculated kWh by the applicable marginal energy rate. Then account for the other items on your current bill, such as fixed charges, slab effects, duties, taxes, fuel adjustments and subsidies. Do not treat the headline per-unit rate as the whole bill.

Use your actual state and consumer tariff
Retail electricity tariffs in India are determined by state electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may subsidize particular consumer classes. Your state, DISCOM, consumer category and monthly slab therefore matter. The Central Electricity Authority’s annual tariff analysis compiles state commission orders, but your current bill and applicable local order are the practical references for your estimate. The Ministry of Power explains the tariff framework, and the Central Electricity Authority publishes its annual tariff-and-duty analysis.

Time-of-day (ToD) billing may also affect when electricity use costs more or less. A Ministry of Power release dated 23 June 2023 described designated eight-hour solar periods with tariffs 10%–20% below normal rates and peak-hour tariffs 10%–20% above normal rates. The release also set implementation timelines for specified consumer groups and smart-meter consumers. These are framework details from that dated release, not confirmation that a particular household currently has those rates or schedules. Check your DISCOM bill and state commission’s current order before changing stream hours around ToD periods. Read the Ministry of Power release via the Press Information Bureau.

Reduce streaming workload without sacrificing a stable stream
Lowering processor load does not automatically lower the complete system’s wall draw. Treat each change as something to measure: check average watts over comparable periods, and confirm that video, audio and stream health remain acceptable.
Try the encoder that suits your hardware
OBS’s hardware-encoding guidance explains that hardware encoders move encoding work from the CPU to a specialised component in the GPU or platform, and generally recommends them for performance. Supported options include NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox, depending on the machine. Check current compatibility and drivers for your hardware. Older encoder generations can produce lower image quality than software encoding at similar bitrates, so inspect the actual output as well as resource use. A lower CPU load is not proof of lower electricity consumption. OBS: Hardware Encoding.

Reduce resolution or frame rate only if the stream allows it
If the computer struggles to encode, test a lower output resolution or frame rate. OBS gives reducing 60 fps to 30 fps as an example when 60 fps is not working. Lowering either setting can reduce processing demands, but it changes the delivered stream; verify that the result still suits the content and viewers. Change one setting at a time, then check for dropped frames, encoder overload and acceptable picture quality. OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Simplify scenes and sources
In OBS, reduce unnecessary scene complexity, expensive sources and browser-source work where practical. Test the stream after each change: a simpler scene may ease resource pressure, but the effect on electricity use depends on the complete system and workload. Verify that a change actually saves money
- Record the meter’s average watts or accumulated kWh during a representative stream period.
- Change one setting or device at a time, keeping stream duration and other conditions as consistent as possible.
- Check stream health and the resulting image and audio, then record a comparable meter reading.
- Compare kWh across the same number of hours. If uptime, room temperature, equipment or production settings differed, note that rather than attributing the entire change to one adjustment.
- Apply the relevant local energy charges and bill components to the measured difference. Consider the purchase cost of any hardware change before claiming a payback; without local prices, tariff details and measured savings, a payback period cannot be established.

What a cost estimate needs
A specific estimate needs your measured average watts, the equipment included, stream hours, state and DISCOM, consumer category, and the relevant bill or tariff details. Without those inputs, a rupee total or guaranteed savings figure would be a guess.
