Short answer: YouTube’s playlist Loop control repeats ordinary playlist playback; it does not, by itself, create or repeat a YouTube Live broadcast. To broadcast a repeating sequence of prerecorded landscape and portrait clips, send a live feed through an encoder or another production workflow, then configure the Live Control Room’s horizontal and vertical layouts. YouTube’s documented controls do not automatically alternate separately uploaded landscape and portrait files from one playlist.

First, separate playlist looping from a live broadcast

A regular YouTube playlist and a YouTube Live stream are different workflows. To repeat an ordinary playlist for viewers, play it and select Loop in the playlist controls. That repeats playlist playback; it does not turn the playlist into a live broadcast. YouTube’s playlist instructions describe the playback control.

A Live stream instead sends a real-time feed to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that sends that feed; its guide explains that an encoder converts video into a digital format to stream on YouTube. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

What YouTube supports for horizontal and vertical Live

When streaming from Live Control Room, YouTube says streams go live in both horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) formats at the same time by default. The vertical stream initially uses a center crop. The documented vertical layout choices include:

  • Center crop: fills the vertical frame by cropping the sides of horizontal footage.
  • Fit to phone width: a listed layout choice for the vertical preview.
  • Stacked: a listed vertical layout choice that arranges content in a stacked layout.

These are layout controls for a Live presentation, not a feature for rotating between separate landscape and portrait uploads as playlist items. YouTube’s guidance names the options but does not establish every detail of their visual behavior for every source. Check the current Live Control Room preview before publishing. Details are in Get started with live streaming.

How to broadcast a repeating sequence of prerecorded clips

For a sequence of clips to appear in a Live stream, prepare and send a continuous live feed using an encoder or production workflow. YouTube’s help does not specify which third-party programs automatically rotate separately uploaded landscape and portrait files, or the exact settings for that behavior. Confirm that your chosen software supports the sequence and orientation handling you need in its current documentation, then test the complete output before going public.

  1. Check that Live is available on your channel. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If you are enabling Live for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours. Check Get started with live streaming.
  2. Choose an encoder or production workflow. YouTube supports streaming through an encoder; it does not require a dedicated hardware encoder for this task. Choose software that can produce the intended continuous feed and consult its instructions for sequencing and orientation changes.
  3. Set up the Live stream in YouTube. Follow the encoder setup flow in Live Control Room and use the stream key provided for that broadcast in the encoder. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
  4. Prepare each clip for the intended layouts. Preview landscape and portrait footage in the horizontal and vertical outputs. Check framing, titles, text near the edges, and transitions. A center crop may remove the sides of a landscape image in the vertical output, so confirm that important content remains visible.
  5. Configure and verify the feed in the encoder. Use settings supported by your encoder and YouTube’s current requirements. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 among supported video codecs and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Match stream quality to available upload bandwidth and leave headroom rather than using all of it. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings.
  6. Run a private or otherwise non-public test before the real broadcast. Test with the same audio and movement as the intended stream. Confirm that the clip order, loop transition, sound, both aspect-ratio outputs, and stream health are acceptable. Monitor Live Control Room messages and stream health during the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance is at Troubleshoot your live stream.

Copyright and channel-policy checks

Having permission to upload a video is not always the only consideration for a live broadcast. Review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies for every clip, music track, and other material in the sequence. Repeating footage does not establish that you own the rights or satisfy YouTube’s policies. A sequence of prerecorded material also does not guarantee monetization or recommendation eligibility; assess the channel and content against YouTube’s applicable policies rather than assuming that looping makes it eligible.

Common problems and fixes

  • The playlist repeats, but there is no Live broadcast: the Loop control applies to ordinary playlist playback. Set up a Live stream through Live Control Room and send it a feed from an encoder instead.
  • Landscape footage looks badly framed vertically: review the vertical layout preview. Try the documented fit-to-phone-width or stacked option, or adjust the source framing in your production workflow; do not assume the center crop will preserve side content.
  • The stream will not start: verify channel eligibility, Live activation, the selected broadcast, and the stream key entered in the encoder. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • The stream buffers or reports health warnings: lower the stream quality or bitrate in the encoder to fit available upload bandwidth, leave bandwidth headroom, and run another test. Monitor Live Control Room’s stream-health messages.
  • The clip order or orientation does not change as expected: check the encoder or production software’s current documentation. YouTube’s playlist Loop and Live layout help do not establish automatic alternation of separately uploaded files.
