To loop a folder of videos in OBS, add them as playlist entries in a VLC Video source and leave Loop Playlist enabled. That repeats the files, but it does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast: OBS, the computer, the network, and YouTube’s connection must all keep running.
Use VLC Video for a playlist, not Media Source
OBS offers two different playback approaches. Use VLC Video when you want to play several files as a playlist. Use the standard Media Source when you want to repeat one selected file. OBS documents the VLC playlist controls in its Media Sources guide.
- Install VLC Media Player. OBS needs VLC’s libraries for the VLC Video source. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the architectures match.
- Add the playlist source. In OBS, select the scene for the broadcast. In the Sources dock, select +, then choose VLC Video. Add the video files to the playlist in the source properties.
- Set playback order. Leave Loop Playlist enabled so playback restarts after the last item. Enable Shuffle Playlist only if you want randomized order; otherwise, the files play in their listed order.
- Keep the source active. VLC Video can pause or stop when it is not visible, depending on its visibility behavior. Keep it visible in the live scene, or choose suitable behavior if your production switches scenes.
- Arrange the scene. Size and position the video in the preview. OBS renders sources higher in the Sources list above lower sources, so place titles, logos, or other overlays above the video when they should appear on top.
- Check the playlist. Confirm that every intended file is listed and playable, then watch playback through the end of the list to verify that the playlist starts over as expected.
To loop just one video
Add a standard Media Source, select the video file, and enable its Loop property. This repeats that file; it is not the VLC Video playlist’s Loop Playlist control.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Enter them in OBS, start the encoder, and check the YouTube live preview before relying on the broadcast. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the account and stream setup.

- Check eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See its live-streaming tips and requirements.
- Get the connection details. In YouTube Live Control Room, select or create the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Enter the details in OBS. Open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key and server details as directed by YouTube. Keep the key private: anyone who gets it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Set output quality for your connection. Choose a resolution, frame rate, and encoder bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; consult its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
- Start and verify. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm that YouTube receives the feed and that the preview shows both video and audio. Check stream health and monitor the broadcast.
Bitrate example: 1080p at 30 fps
In YouTube’s settings table available on October 3, 2026, its recommended ingestion bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps is 10 Mbps for H.264 and 14 Mbps for AV1 or H.265. These are YouTube’s recommendations for those specific codec and video settings, not a universal setting or a measurement of your connection. A bitrate that exceeds your stable upload capacity can make the stream unreliable. YouTube advises testing before the stream and monitoring stream health.
What a 24/7 loop does—and does not—guarantee
Loop Playlist only repeats the media sequence. It does not keep OBS open, prevent the computer from sleeping or restarting, repair a missing or unreadable file, restore a failed internet connection, or guarantee that YouTube will continue ingesting the stream. OBS’s playback controls and YouTube’s encoder connection are separate parts of the setup; neither promises uninterrupted operation.

- Prevent the computer from sleeping during a stream, and account for updates, restarts, power interruptions, and overheating.
- Keep source videos available on a dependable drive and confirm the files remain readable. External storage is optional, not a requirement for folder looping.
- Use an upload connection that can sustain the chosen bitrate, and monitor OBS and YouTube stream health for dropped frames or a lost feed.
- Test the playlist, audio, scene visibility, and YouTube preview before leaving a stream unattended.
A 24-hour live feed is not necessarily a complete YouTube replay
YouTube Help says a stream shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also says DVR rewind capability may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Therefore, a continuous 24-hour broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay. If keeping a full recording matters, record locally as a backup or divide the broadcast into planned sessions. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams and DVR on live streams.

Protect the channel and the playlist
Using a folder of videos does not change YouTube’s rules for what you may broadcast or how a channel may monetize its content. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to use for this purpose; a playlist loop is not permission to rebroadcast someone else’s work. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies before starting a continuous stream, especially if the files include music, reused footage, or material from other creators.

Troubleshoot common looping and stream problems
- VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: install VLC Media Player. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source list again.
- The playlist plays once and stops: open the VLC Video source properties and enable Loop Playlist. For a single-file Media Source, enable that source’s Loop property instead.
- Files play in a different order than expected: disable Shuffle Playlist to retain the listed order.
- Video pauses after switching scenes: check the VLC source’s visibility behavior and whether the source is visible in the active scene.
- YouTube shows no video or audio: confirm the correct scene and source are active, check OBS audio meters and the source’s audio, then verify the YouTube preview.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: check the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the channel can live stream, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. Replace an exposed stream key in Live Control Room.
- Stream health is unstable: test a lower resolution, frame rate, or bitrate that fits the upload connection, then monitor health again. Use YouTube’s current codec-specific settings rather than assuming the same bitrate works for every setup.
- A long stream has no complete replay: YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours, and long-stream rewind can be limited. Keep a local recording or plan shorter sessions if a replay is required.
