You can loop a festival recording on YouTube Live with OBS Studio: add the video as a Media Source, enable Loop, then send OBS’s output to a YouTube live stream using its server URL and stream key. The video repeats at its end; OBS remains responsible for sending the broadcast, so the computer and internet connection running OBS must stay available.

Before you set it up, make sure you have the rights to rebroadcast the recording and its music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and can interrupt or terminate a stream when it detects content that is not cleared for use.

Before you start

Check that your channel can go live

YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The same guidance says creators must be at least 16. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. These are YouTube’s general requirements; India-specific variations were not confirmed in the cited guidance. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Prepare the recording and connection

  • Have a local copy of the festival recording that you are authorized to broadcast.
  • Install OBS Studio and ensure the computer can play the file smoothly while streaming.
  • Use a reliable internet connection with enough outbound upload capacity for your chosen stream bitrate. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s total bitrate; check upload speed rather than relying on download speed. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  • Plan time to test the full chain—file playback, OBS output, YouTube preview, and audio—before viewers arrive.

Set up the YouTube Live stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create a new stream or schedule one. Choose the visibility and event details appropriate for your broadcast.
  2. Choose an encoder workflow. YouTube’s encoder setup provides a stream URL and stream key for software such as OBS. Keep the key private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
  3. Copy the server URL and stream key. You will enter both in OBS. YouTube’s instructions for encoder setup are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Loop one festival recording in OBS

  1. Open the scene you will broadcast. In OBS, use the Sources panel to add a source to that scene.
  2. Add a Media Source. Select + in Sources, choose Media Source, give it a recognizable name, and confirm.
  3. Select the video file. In the Media Source properties, enable the local-file option if shown, then browse to your festival recording. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM.
  4. Enable Loop. Turn on the Media Source’s Loop checkbox and confirm the properties. OBS defines this option as replaying the file when playback completes. The setting is on the source, so check it on the source used in the live scene. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  5. Check the scene and audio. Confirm the video fits the canvas as intended, the audio meters move when sound is present, and playback is not muted. Avoid adding unrelated desktop or microphone audio unless you intend to broadcast it.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. Open OBS stream settings. In OBS, go to Settings → Stream. Select YouTube as the service if available, or choose a custom service and enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  2. Apply the settings and start the encoder. Click Start Streaming in OBS. This sends the repeated recording to YouTube; OBS’s Media Source Loop setting controls the repetition.
  3. Check Live Control Room before making the broadcast public. Wait for YouTube’s incoming-stream preview, verify picture and sound, and review the event’s visibility and title. Follow the Live Control Room prompts to start or manage the event.
  4. Monitor the broadcast. Keep OBS and Live Control Room available to watch for dropped frames, audio problems, or YouTube copyright notices. A local file looping successfully does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted internet or platform connection.
  5. End the stream deliberately. Stop sending the feed from OBS and end the event in YouTube Studio when finished. YouTube says encoder streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; longer streams should not be assumed to have an archive. See the encoder setup instructions.

Use a playlist instead of a single file

If you need to rotate among several recordings, OBS’s VLC Video source supports a playlist and has Loop Playlist enabled by default. VLC must be installed for this source. For one recording, the built-in Media Source is simpler and has its own explicit Loop control. OBS describes both source types in its Media Sources guide.

Copyright and India-specific considerations

Only broadcast material you are entitled to use for this purpose. Owning a copy, having attended the festival, or finding the recording online does not automatically give you permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on stream providers for the rights needed for worldwide exploitation, including music rights, and for applicable requirements in the stream territory.

YouTube says it scans live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects such content, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you; if the content remains, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. Even licensed third-party material may cause interruption unless the rights owner adds your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

Preparation, reliability, and common fixes

Give YouTube time to recognize the encoder

YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Use that window to confirm the preview, check that the watch page is accessible, and monitor audio and video. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not guarantees of stream quality. See YouTube live-streaming tips.

Fix a recording that stops instead of repeating

  • Likely cause: Loop is off, or the wrong Media Source is in the active scene. Fix: Open that source’s properties and enable Loop; confirm it is the same source visible in the scene.
  • Likely cause: OBS is playing a different file than intended. Fix: Recheck the selected local path and test playback before going live.

Fix a YouTube stream that does not receive video

  • Likely cause: Incorrect server URL or stream key. Fix: Copy the current values from the correct YouTube Live Control Room event into OBS’s stream settings. Do not publish or share the key.
  • Likely cause: Live streaming is not enabled on the channel or an eligibility restriction applies. Fix: Review YouTube’s eligibility guidance and enable streaming ahead of time.

Fix buffering, dropped frames, or missing sound

  • Buffering or dropped frames: Check outbound upload capacity and network stability; YouTube recommends 20% headroom above total stream bitrate. Lower the stream bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, then retest.
  • No sound: Check that the media source is not muted, that its audio is reaching OBS’s mixer, and that the YouTube preview has audio before the event begins.
  • Copyright interruption: Check Live Control Room notices and stop using material you cannot clear. A license alone may not prevent automated interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel.
