To loop a 10-hour sleep meditation video in OBS, add it to a scene as a Media Source, select the local video file, and enable Loop in the source properties. Then connect OBS to a YouTube encoder stream with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, preview the feed in Live Control Room, and start the live event. Test the complete setup before relying on it overnight; these settings do not guarantee an uninterrupted 10-hour run.

What you need before setting up the loop

  • A video file stored locally on the computer running OBS. OBS lists MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM among supported Media Source formats. Its guide does not specify a maximum duration or file size, so test your particular 10-hour file.
  • Access to YouTube Studio and an encoder stream in Live Control Room.
  • An upload connection with enough capacity for the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate.
  • Permission to use the meditation video’s visuals and audio. YouTube’s live settings guidance says content must not infringe others’ rights and must comply with Community Guidelines.

Keep the file available for the whole broadcast. OBS’s Media Source guide, published January 11, 2022, documents the source controls and formats; interface wording and supported formats may change. OBS: Media Sources

Loop one video with OBS Media Source

  1. Add the source: In OBS, choose or create the scene for the broadcast. In the Sources dock, select + and add Media Source.
  2. Select the file: In the Media Source properties, choose the local video file. Confirm that the source appears in the scene and that its picture fits the canvas.
  3. Enable repetition: Turn on Loop. OBS defines this control as replaying the file when playback completes.
  4. Check the separate restart option: Restart playback when source becomes active is not the loop setting. It restarts playback when the source is in the current scene and visible. Use it only if you want the video to restart when you make that source active.
  5. Check framing and audio: Preview the scene in OBS. If the image is incorrectly sized or positioned, use the source transform options to fit, center, stretch, or crop it as appropriate; preserve the video’s aspect ratio when that suits the footage. Confirm the intended audio source is audible in the OBS mixer.

For a single video, Media Source is the simpler choice because it does not require VLC. If you need a playlist, OBS also offers VLC Video: it supports a list of media and a Loop Playlist control, but VLC must be installed. OBS notes that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select an encoder stream: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the encoder stream you will use.
  2. Copy the connection details: Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube.
  3. Enter them in OBS: Open OBS streaming settings, choose YouTube as the service if offered, and enter the server URL and stream key in their corresponding fields. If you use a service configuration that asks for them separately, use the same values from YouTube.
  4. Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. YouTube describes it as the stream’s password and address; reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
  5. Send a preview: Start streaming from OBS. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming feed and check that both video and sound are correct.
  6. Start the event: When the preview is ready, start the live event in YouTube using the Live Control Room flow. YouTube recommends checking the preview and testing before going live.

See YouTube’s current instructions for setting up a live stream with an encoder and its live streaming tips. YouTube recommends upload capacity equal to the stream’s total bitrate plus 20% headroom; this is a recommendation, not a guarantee of stability.

Test and monitor the 10-hour broadcast

Run a test before the planned overnight stream using the same file, scene, audio, OBS settings, network, and YouTube workflow. Confirm that the picture remains correctly framed, the audio is present, and the file returns to its beginning when it ends. During the live run, monitor audio and video quality rather than assuming that a successful start means the entire session will remain healthy.

YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 10-hour stream falls under that stated duration, but automatic archiving does not mean OBS, the computer, or the network is guaranteed to stay connected for the full run. YouTube’s platform rules can change; check the current encoder streaming guide.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The video stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. Do not rely on Restart playback when source becomes active; that control governs activation, not end-of-file repetition.
  • The VLC Video source is unavailable: Install VLC and match its architecture to OBS. OBS specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. For a single file, switch to Media Source to avoid this dependency.
  • The picture is cropped, too small, or distorted: Select the source and adjust its transform in the scene. Fit or center it as needed; avoid stretching if that would distort the original composition.
  • YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is sending, then verify the selected stream URL and key against Live Control Room. Check the encoder status and available upload bandwidth.
  • The preview is unstable or quality drops: Check the connection’s available upload capacity against the stream’s total bitrate, leaving the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Test under the conditions expected during the actual broadcast.
  • Audio or picture fails during the long run: Check the source file and OBS output before going live, then monitor the actual live feed. Official settings documentation does not establish a guarantee for every file, computer, or network.
