Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo end a systemd-managed Linux login session from a script, use loginctl terminate-session SESSION_ID with the ID of the session you intend to close. This terminates the session’s processes, so it can also kill the script that runs the command. If you only want the script to stop, use the shell’s exit statement instead. These actions are different from powering off the computer.
Choose what you want to end
“Log out” can refer to several different actions. Choose the command by its scope, not just by the wording of the request.
| Goal | What it affects | Approach |
|---|---|---|
| Stop the script | The current script process | Use exit STATUS in the script. |
| End one systemd-managed session | Every process and attached resource in the selected session | Use loginctl terminate-session SESSION_ID. |
| End every session for a user | All sessions belonging to the named user | Use loginctl terminate-user USER only when that wider scope is intended. |
| Power off the computer | The whole machine | Use a machine power-off command only when shutdown is intended. |
End one systemd-managed session
On a host using systemd-logind, loginctl terminate-session ID terminates the specified session. The systemd loginctl manual says it “kills all processes of the session and deallocates all resources attached to the session.” This is session termination, not a gentle request for applications to close. The script may be killed during the operation, so do not rely on it to run further cleanup afterward.
Validate the session ID before using it
A script can use XDG_SESSION_ID when that variable is present and identifies the intended session. Do not pass it through unchecked: an unset or stale value could cause failure or target a session other than the one you mean. The loginctl manual documents that omitting the ID selects the session invoking the command, but relying on that default is not appropriate when the target must be explicit.

This pattern checks that the variable is nonempty and handles a nonzero command status; it does not independently prove that the ID is current or belongs to the user or session you intend. Confirm the target before running a script that can end a session.
Consider where the script runs
A terminal-launched script may run within the session you want to end. A service, cron job, SSH-launched process, or other script outside that session should not assume its own environment identifies the target. In those cases, select the intended session ID deliberately and ensure the caller has the authorization required to terminate it. The manual documents a zero exit status for success and a nonzero status for failure.

End all sessions for a user only when that is intended
loginctl terminate-user USER has broader scope than terminating one session: it terminates all sessions for the named user. The systemd login1 interface documentation also notes that lingering can allow user processes to continue after logout. Therefore, ending a user’s sessions is not necessarily the same as stopping every process or user service associated with that account.
Use a desktop logout interface for a graceful return to the login screen
If your goal is to close applications gracefully and return to the display manager, the appropriate request can depend on the desktop environment or window manager. There is no single portable graphical logout command established here for every Linux desktop. Use the logout mechanism documented for the environment you run rather than assuming that terminating a logind session provides a graceful application-by-application shutdown.

Do not confuse logout with stopping a script or powering off
Stopping the script
Use the shell’s exit STATUS statement when the script itself should end. It terminates that shell process; it does not, by itself, ask a desktop or login manager to close the user’s session. Do not assume that a logout command in a script universally ends a graphical or login-manager session; behavior depends on shell and execution context.
Powering off the machine
poweroff, shutdown, and systemctl poweroff are machine-level operations, not ways to log out just one user. The Linux man-pages poweroff reference, systemd systemctl manual, and Linux man-pages shutdown reference describe those shutdown operations. Do not substitute them when the desired result is to end a user session and leave the computer running.
