To stop unauthorized changes to an HP printer, set a unique administrator password for its Embedded Web Server (EWS), then review wireless security and network services against the features you actually use. The EWS is usually reached from a browser using the printer’s IP address or host name. Exact menus and available controls depend on the printer model and firmware, so use the manual for your specific device.
Open your HP printer’s Embedded Web Server
- Find the printer’s IP address or host name. Check the printer’s control panel or print a configuration or network report; the available route varies by model.
- Use a browser on the same network. Enter the IP address or host name in the address bar to open the EWS. If it does not load, verify that the printer and computer are on the same network and consult the model’s manual for its access method.
- Sign in if prompted. The default or initial credential is not the same across all HP printers. Some models use a factory PIN, which may be printed on a label or available through a report; others use a different setup process. Follow the instructions for your exact model rather than trying a presumed universal PIN.
HP’s EWS guidance describes the general management interface, while its model-specific instructions should determine the precise navigation.
Set an administrator password
In the EWS, look for the Security area or the model’s administrator/account settings. HP’s LaserJet instructions provide a model-specific example of signing in and changing EWS credentials in the Security area; the same labels and path are not guaranteed on other printers. Use the printer’s manual to locate the corresponding control.

Choose a unique, strong administrator password and store it in a password manager or another secure place. This helps prevent someone who can reach the management interface from changing protected settings. It does not secure the Wi-Fi network itself or prevent someone with physical access from interacting with the printer.

- Computer lock for select HP, Lenovo and Asus laptops only and select Kensington docking stations; please check your device specifications to make sure it has a nano sized lock slot.
- Slim lockhead allows the laptop to lie flat and stable; won’t block valuable ports, allowing for full use of the laptop while attached; Pivot and rotate cable head featuring one-handed operation allows for easy and flexible connection and movement
- Resettable four-wheel number code lets you choose from 10,000 possible combinations
- 6 foot long (1.8M) carbon steel cable with plastic sheath resists tampering, offers peace-of-mind, and delivers the same level of cut and theft resistance as thicker cables
- Register & Retrieve - Kensington’s free online code registration program that allows for quick, secure, and easy lookup if the combination is ever lost or forgotten
If the EWS requests a factory PIN or you cannot sign in, do not assume another model’s credential will work. Check the device label, configuration report, and model-specific HP instructions. If those do not resolve access, use HP’s support guidance for that printer rather than repeatedly guessing.

- Wireless security: use WPA2 or stronger protection for the Wi-Fi network. A printer password does not replace a properly secured wireless network.
- HTTPS: enable redirection to HTTPS for browser-based management when the option is available, so EWS access uses an encrypted connection.
- Encryption strength: select high encryption strength if the printer exposes that setting.
- Firmware: keep the printer’s firmware current using the update method supported for your model.
- Unused services: disable services you have confirmed are not needed, rather than leaving unnecessary network features enabled.
HP’s consumer security recommendations provide the relevant checklist. Settings differ by product, so a missing option may simply not be supported by your printer or firmware.
Restrict services without breaking useful features
For office and enterprise environments, HP recommends limiting unnecessary network services and configuration routes. Depending on the printer and local setup, administrators may be able to restrict unused print protocols or remote configuration paths. That is not a reason to turn everything off: a service may be required for printing, device discovery, scanning, remote printing, monitoring, or support.

- Hp Security Cable Lock For Docking Station - 6.10 Ft
Before changing a service, identify what depends on it and test the effect in the actual environment. In a household or small office, disabling a discovery service, for example, may make the printer harder for computers or phones to find even though direct printing by IP address still works. In a managed fleet, a remote management route may be needed by the organization’s support process.
HP’s Zero Trust security guidance is intended for supported networked product families and environments; it notes that available settings vary with model and firmware. Use it alongside the device manual and your organization’s requirements, not as a universal list of switches.

Decide whether to keep Web Services enabled
HP Web Services can connect supported printers to features such as Instant Ink, Print Anywhere, and ePrint. If you use one of those features, disabling Web Services may interrupt it. If you do not use connected features, you can review the instructions for disabling or removing Web Services for your particular model before making the change.

What these steps protect—and what they do not
An administrator password limits unauthorized changes made through the EWS, while network and service controls reduce unnecessary exposure. They do not make a printer invulnerable, replace Wi-Fi security, or address physical access. HP states that it “strongly recommends configuring minimum security settings for all HP printers to eliminate most security exposures”; its guidance also makes clear that control availability varies by model and firmware. Treat these steps as risk reduction, and revisit the settings when your network or printer use changes.
