Lock a BitLocker drive from Command Prompt
- Open Command Prompt. Use an account with permission to manage the drive.
- Enter
manage-bde -lock D:, replacingD:with the target drive letter, then press Enter. Microsoft documents this syntax and example for Windows 11 in its manage-bde lock reference.
The command locks a BitLocker-protected drive so its contents cannot be accessed until an unlock key is provided. Confirm the drive letter before running it; the example letter is not necessarily your drive.
Lock a drive from PowerShell
- Open PowerShell.
- Run
Lock-BitLocker -MountPoint "E:", changingE:to the target volume’s mount point. Microsoft documents this form in its Lock-BitLocker reference.
The Lock-BitLocker cmdlet cannot lock the volume hosting the operating system, so it is not a way to lock the currently running Windows volume, typically C:. Microsoft’s BitLocker operations guide identifies Command Prompt and PowerShell tools as options for managing BitLocker, including scripted tasks.
If the drive is in use
PowerShell provides the -ForceDismount option to attempt to lock a volume even when it is in use:

Lock-BitLocker -MountPoint "E:" -ForceDismount
Use this only when necessary. Forcing a dismount can interrupt access to the active volume or files using it; close applications and finish file operations first when possible. The option is documented in Microsoft’s Lock-BitLocker reference.
Choose between the two commands

Microsoft also describes Control Panel as a management path for basic BitLocker tasks, but the cited guidance does not specify a Control Panel procedure for locking a drive. For the lock action, use one of the documented commands above.

Unlock the drive when you need it again
Locking is separate from turning BitLocker off, suspending protection, or changing a key protector. To regain access, unlock the drive using an available unlock method. Microsoft documents manage-bde -unlock with either a recovery password or a recovery-key file in its manage-bde unlock reference. Make sure you can access the method appropriate to your drive before locking it.
Automatic unlocking is a separate setting
Automatic unlocking for BitLocker-protected data drives is configured independently of the lock command. Microsoft documents manage-bde -autounlock -disable D: to disable automatic unlocking and manage-bde -autounlock -enable D: to enable it. These commands change the automatic-unlock setting; they are not substitutes for locking the drive. See Microsoft’s manage-bde autounlock reference.
