Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →First decide where the JavaScript should run. If a string of JavaScript must run in an HTML page before you print that page to PDF, use a browser-rendering workflow such as Puppeteer and generate the PDF with Page.pdf(). If the PDF itself should contain JavaScript for a compatible PDF viewer to run, use pdf-lib’s PDFDocument.addJavaScript(name, script). These are different jobs: adding a script to a PDF does not run it to prepare an HTML page.
Choose when the JavaScript should run
“Load JavaScript from a string” can mean either executing code during page rendering or attaching code to the finished PDF. Decide based on the output you need, not just on the fact that both workflows involve JavaScript.
| Question | Run JavaScript before creating the PDF | Store JavaScript in the PDF |
|---|---|---|
| When does the code run? | While a browser renders the page, before the PDF is printed. | When a PDF viewer supports and chooses to run the document’s script. |
| What does the code work on? | An HTML page and its browser environment. | The PDF document and actions that refer to its script. |
| Typical goal | Set page content or state that should appear in the PDF. | Add interactive or document-level behavior. |
| Relevant tool | Puppeteer, which controls a browser to render a page. | pdf-lib, whose API documents adding JavaScript to a PDF. |
If the JavaScript changes what should be visible on the printed page, use the browser-rendering path. If you want a PDF viewer to run code when the document opens, use the PDF-document path—and account for the fact that viewer support and security policies vary.
Run a JavaScript string before printing a page with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s PDF guide uses Page.pdf() to print a rendered page. Its API states that PDF generation uses print CSS media by default. If the layout should use screen styles instead, call page.emulateMediaType('screen') before page.pdf(). The guide also says the method waits for fonts by default. See the Puppeteer PDF generation guide and Page.pdf() API reference.

The general sequence is: create or load the HTML in a browser page, make the required JavaScript and page resources available, then print the rendered result. The exact method for injecting a string and deciding when it has finished depends on the Puppeteer version and page setup. Consult the API documentation matching the version installed in your project before selecting a content-loading or script-injection recipe; the PDF method alone does not guarantee that asynchronous work initiated by your own script has completed.
Check rendering conditions before printing
- Confirm that the script ran in the page context where it needs to change content.
- Wait for application-specific asynchronous work, such as data loading, to finish before printing; font readiness alone does not establish that your application is done.
- Choose print media or explicitly emulate screen media, depending on which CSS layout belongs in the PDF.
- Verify page breaks, margins, and other print-specific styling in the generated file rather than assuming the browser viewport will be reproduced exactly.
Do not use pdf-lib’s document-script API as a substitute for rendering HTML and CSS. The two APIs operate at different stages and target different inputs.
Add JavaScript to the PDF document with pdf-lib
For document-level JavaScript, pdf-lib documents PDFDocument.addJavaScript(name, script). The script argument is a string. The API describes scripts intended to execute when the PDF opens or to define a function that a later JavaScript action can reference. This embeds JavaScript in the PDF; it does not execute that script in a browser to populate an HTML page before printing. Read the PDFDocument API for the API details.
Use the method on the PDF document you are creating or modifying, then save that document using the library’s normal document workflow. The script name identifies the script within the document; the code string is the script content. Check the installed pdf-lib version’s documentation for the surrounding document-loading and saving calls used by your application.

What embedding does—and does not—guarantee
- It makes the script part of the PDF document; it does not guarantee that every reader will execute it.
- PDF applications can restrict JavaScript for security reasons, and behavior differs across viewers and environments.
- A PDF containing JavaScript is not equivalent to a browser-rendered PDF. It may not change the page’s appearance at all unless viewer behavior or document actions make it do so.
- Test the result in the actual PDF viewers your users rely on, and provide a usable document when scripting is disabled.
Use the right workflow for common goals
Render generated HTML, charts, or application output
Use Puppeteer to render the page and then call Page.pdf(). This is the appropriate category of tool when browser layout, CSS, page state, or rendered elements determine the PDF’s appearance. Make your application’s own readiness condition explicit before printing.
Make a PDF interactive in a supported viewer
Use pdf-lib’s document JavaScript API when the PDF should carry a script for a PDF reader to interpret. Keep a non-scripted path available, since execution is not universal and can be blocked by viewer policy.
Convert a webpage URL directly to a PDF
If the input is already a public webpage and you do not need to execute your own JavaScript string, a screenshot or PDF capture service can avoid maintaining browser automation infrastructure. That is not a replacement for custom page-side code: it captures a URL rather than running an arbitrary JavaScript string you supply.
Or skip the browser setup
For a webpage that is ready to capture, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-call API that returns a screenshot or PDF. It is not a way to execute a custom JavaScript string in a page before PDF generation. Its cleanup options address cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; its response identifies outcomes such as bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and whether a request was billed.

Troubleshoot the result
The PDF omits changes made by the JavaScript string
This usually means the page was printed before the relevant work completed, or the code ran in a different context from the content being rendered. Establish a page-specific readiness condition and wait for it before invoking Page.pdf(). Do not assume that the default font wait also waits for application data or arbitrary script work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe PDF layout differs from the browser window
Page.pdf() uses print CSS media by default, so print styles may produce a different layout from screen styles. If you want screen media, emulate it before generating the PDF. Otherwise, adjust the page’s print CSS and inspect the saved output.
The embedded PDF script does not run
Confirm that the script was added to the document and saved, then test with a PDF viewer that supports the relevant behavior and permits JavaScript. A viewer that disables scripts may display the PDF normally without running its code. Do not treat that behavior as proof that the script string failed to attach.

The PDF looks correct but lacks interactivity
A browser-generated PDF is a print rendering, not a promise that web-page JavaScript will continue running inside the PDF. If interaction is the requirement, determine whether it belongs in the source webpage or in PDF-specific behavior, then choose the matching workflow.

The cited documentation establishes the purpose and behavior of the relevant APIs, not comparative performance, maintenance, or compatibility benchmarks. Do not choose between Puppeteer and pdf-lib on an assumed speed advantage: select based on whether your input is a rendered page or a PDF document. For reliability, control page readiness and validate the generated file in the target environment. For embedded scripts, include a fallback for viewers that restrict execution.
ScreenshotNeo may be useful when capturing a webpage URL as a PDF is enough and you want to avoid setting up browser capture yourself. Its stated plans are Free for 1,000 shots per month with no card; Starter $5 for 3,000; Growth $15 for 15,000; Pro $39 for 60,000; Scale $99 for 250,000; and Business $249 for 1,000,000. Yearly billing gives two months free; every feature is on every plan. These service plans do not change the distinction between rendering a page-side script and embedding JavaScript in a PDF.
Keep the distinction clear
For JavaScript that prepares visible HTML before PDF creation, render the page with Puppeteer and print it with Page.pdf(). For JavaScript intended to live inside the resulting PDF, use pdf-lib’s addJavaScript(name, script) and test in the PDF viewers that matter to your users. Neither route guarantees universal execution of JavaScript across all environments.
