Load dishes with their dirty surfaces facing the center, keep open items facing down, and leave room for water to reach every surface. Before starting a cycle, check that the spray arms spin freely. The precise rack layout and restrictions vary by Samsung model, so use your dishwasher’s manual for model-specific guidance.
Prepare dishes before loading
Scrape off food debris and remove loose waste such as bones, seeds, toothpicks, and paper before placing dishes in the dishwasher. Then arrange the load according to the size and shape of each item rather than trying to fill every gap. Samsung recommends checking the user manual for the loading pattern and features specific to your model (Samsung US Support).
Place dishes for water coverage
Lower rack
Put larger cookware and other bulky items on the lower rack. Face the dirtiest surfaces toward the center of the dishwasher, and position pots and other open items face down so water can reach their interiors. Leave space between items instead of nesting them tightly.
Upper rack
Put smaller items such as glasses, cups, saucers, and mugs on the upper rack. Place open items face down, and avoid letting dishes touch or block one another. Some Samsung models include a glass support or other rack features; follow the manual for your model’s intended use.

Plastic items
Check your model’s instructions before putting plastic on the lower rack. Samsung cautions that some models do not allow plastic items there, even when the items are labeled dishwasher-safe.
Arrange cutlery without nesting
Separate forks, spoons, and knives so they do not nest together and block water. Samsung’s general guidance is to put knives in the basket with handles up and forks and spoons with handles down. Secure lightweight pieces so they cannot shift during the cycle. Depending on the model, cutlery may go in individual basket slots, an upper cutlery section, or a third rack; use the arrangement specified in the manual.

Adjust the upper rack only as your model allows
Rack designs and adjustment mechanisms differ. If your dishwasher has an adjustable upper rack, Samsung Canada advises fully extending it and operating both side handles together. Adjust the rack before loading to reduce the risk of damaging dishes. See the instructions for your exact model (Samsung Canada Support, updated February 4, 2025).

- After loading, turn each spray nozzle by hand.
- If a nozzle cannot turn freely, look for a dish or protruding handle in its path.
- Rearrange the obstruction, then spin the nozzle again to confirm it moves freely.
This quick check helps catch items that could interfere with water distribution during the cycle. Samsung also provides model-specific loading guidance in its dishwasher loading instructions.
