To live stream a dance class on YouTube, confirm your channel can go live, choose a phone, webcam, or encoder, frame the room so viewers can see the instructor’s full range of movement, test voice and music audio, and check that your upload connection can handle the stream. Before class, make sure you have rights for the music in both the live broadcast and any replay: YouTube scans live streams and may interrupt them when it detects copyrighted content.
Choose a streaming setup
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. Pick based on your channel’s eligibility, the camera’s view of the dance space, audio needs, available upload bandwidth, and how much production control you want.
| Setup | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Phone or tablet | A straightforward, single-camera class | Mobile streaming has extra eligibility requirements, and YouTube may limit the audience below 1,000 subscribers. |
| Webcam | A quick stream from a computer | You need a computer webcam with a view wide enough to show the full dance space. |
| Encoder with camera and microphone | Overlays, external cameras, microphones, or more production control | It takes more setup and testing; create the stream early and check its preview and playback on viewer devices. |
Check that your channel can go live
General live-stream requirements
For YouTube live streaming, the channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the creator must be at least 16. Check your channel’s live access before class rather than discovering a restriction when you are ready to teach.
Extra requirements for the YouTube mobile app
Mobile streaming requires at least 50 subscribers, a supported phone or tablet, a verified channel, streaming enabled, and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of your planned class.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube may limit mobile stream audiences for channels below 1,000 subscribers. It also says archived mobile streams are set to private by default under that threshold. If you want a replay, check its visibility after class and decide whether to keep it private or make it public.
Set up the room, camera, and audio
Frame the instructor and dance space
For a movement class, place the camera far enough back to show the instructor’s whole body and the area needed for the choreography. Check the frame at the edges of movements, not just while standing still; kicks, turns, floor work, and traveling steps can move outside a tight shot. Keep the camera stable—an appropriately placed tripod or floor stand can help—and verify the view from a viewer’s phone.

Make speech clear over music
Test the instructor speaking while the class music plays. Viewers need to hear counts, cues, and safety instructions distinctly; music that sounds balanced when nobody is speaking may overpower the voice during teaching. Adjust microphone placement and music level, then listen to the stream playback on a separate device. YouTube’s encoder guidance includes microphones among the possible production equipment and advises checking audio and video before going live.
Check upload capacity
Compare the available upload bandwidth with the combined bitrate of the stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth in reserve beyond that combined bitrate. A fixed speed target is not useful without knowing the selected stream bitrate and any backup stream configuration, so measure the actual connection and settings you plan to use.

Run a pre-class test
- Confirm access: check channel verification, age eligibility, and live-stream access. For the mobile app, confirm the 50-subscriber threshold and supported device, and allow up to 24 hours for first activation.
- Select the workflow: use mobile for a simple single-camera class, a webcam for a quick computer setup, or an encoder when you need overlays or separate camera and microphone hardware.
- Create and preview the stream: if using an encoder, set up the event early. Check the encoder preview, confirm the stream appears on the channel or watch page, and open it on a phone as a viewer.
- Check full-body framing: test the camera position through representative movements and confirm the whole teaching area remains visible.
- Test speech and music together: listen on a separate device and make sure spoken instructions remain understandable over the music.
- Verify bandwidth headroom: compare upload capacity with the full stream bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% reserve.
- Set visibility deliberately: decide whether the live stream and replay should be public or private; check mobile replay visibility after class, especially below 1,000 subscribers.
- Clear music rights: confirm that the music is licensed for YouTube live use and any archived replay before starting.
Use music you are authorized to stream
The responsibility for music rights rests with the streamer. YouTube’s livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” See the YouTube livestream terms.
A purchase or general music subscription does not by itself establish that you have rights to broadcast a track on YouTube or keep it in a replay. Confirm that your permission covers both uses. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may interrupt a stream. Even if you have a license, the stream may still be interrupted unless the rights holder has added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting before class; do not assume a license guarantees uninterrupted playback.
