To stream 4K HDR video to YouTube with AWS Elemental Live, configure an Apple HLS output group, use a YouTube HLS stream key, and encode the source as HEVC with accurate 10-bit HDR signaling. AWS’s worked example uses 3840×2160 at 59.94 fps, 20 Mbps, and a two-second GOP, but those are example settings—not universal requirements. YouTube’s current HLS and HDR rules take precedence over older AWS interface details.
Before you configure the event
Confirm that the source is genuinely HDR and that the installed Elemental Live appliance, software version, and license support the output you intend to create. YouTube HDR requires HEVC, 10-bit video, BT.2020 primaries and matrix, and transfer characteristics that match the source: PQ (ST 2084) or HLG. A 4K frame size alone does not make footage HDR.
- Use camera footage captured in PQ or HLG, or another source with valid HDR characteristics and metadata.
- Do not force HDR metadata onto SDR footage. An HDR label or conversion setting cannot restore highlight or color information that the source does not contain.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter it only in the encoder’s destination settings; never publish it in a screenshot, example, or log.
AWS’s April 14, 2021 Elemental Live tutorial is a specific worked configuration. Check the current YouTube HDR live-streaming guidance and documentation for your installed Elemental Live version before an event, because labels and requirements can change.
Create the YouTube HLS destination
- Set up the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live stream and select an HLS stream key. For HDR HLS, YouTube says to leave Turn on manual settings unchecked, which is the default.
- Copy the current HLS upload endpoint and stream key. Use the endpoint and credentials YouTube displays for the stream. Do not assume an older endpoint or URL format remains current.
- Create an Elemental Live event and configure its input. Confirm the input carries the intended HDR source and that its frame rate and color characteristics are understood before applying output conversion.
- Add an Apple HLS output group. Set the destination to YouTube’s current HLS upload endpoint and provide the stream key in the appropriate credential field. AWS’s 2021 example specifies Basic PUT and a destination URL with a trailing ampersand; follow the current YouTube instructions if their endpoint syntax or your installed interface differs.
- Set segment and playlist behavior. YouTube specifies MPEG-2 transport stream (TS) segments of 1–4 seconds and rolling playlists with no more than five outstanding segments. The HLS delivery must use HTTPS POST or PUT, must not use byte ranges, and must not use encryption other than HTTPS.

| Elemental Live video setting | AWS example | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Frame size | 3840×2160 | Use only if the input and intended YouTube output are 4K. |
| Codec and profile | HEVC, Main10/main profile | Use a 10-bit-capable HEVC configuration for HDR. |
| Frame rate | 59.940 fps | Match the actual source and intended output cadence; do not convert a different source rate blindly. |
| Video bitrate | 20,000,000 bits/s (20 Mbps) | This is the AWS example value, not a universal YouTube recommendation. Check YouTube’s current guidance for the chosen codec and frame rate. |
| GOP | 2 seconds | Use a two-second keyframe interval as a practical alignment point; YouTube’s general encoder guidance says not to exceed four seconds. |
| B-frames | 2 | As specified by the AWS example; verify compatibility with the installed encoder configuration. |
| GOP structure | Closed GOP; cadence 1 | Use the example’s closed-GOP setting where available. |
| Reference frames | 1 | AWS’s example value. |
| Scene-change detection | Enabled as specified in the AWS example | Interface controls can vary by software version; consult the installed-version documentation. |
YouTube publishes resolution- and frame-rate-specific bitrate guidance, and page variants can show different values by locale. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for your exact codec, frame rate, and region rather than treating AWS’s 20 Mbps example as a universal target.
Preserve correct HDR signaling
YouTube’s HDR requirements are about the signal as well as the resolution: use HEVC at 10-bit depth, BT.2020 color primaries and matrix, and either PQ (ST 2084) or HLG transfer characteristics consistent with the content. In Elemental Live, AWS’s example enables the color corrector and selects Force HDR10. Use that only when the source and intended output are correctly represented as HDR10; do not use a forced conversion to disguise SDR as HDR or to relabel HLG as PQ.

ZowieBox enables bidirectional conversion between HDMI and SRT streams, allowing reliable remote production, live streaming, and video contribution workflows with high-quality transmission even across long-distance networks.
AWS states that HDR10 output needs HEVC and a Main10 profile. The cited AWS appliance-series requirement for 4K applies to Dolby Vision output; it should not be generalized to HDR10. Confirm exact appliance and license capabilities in the documentation for your installed version.
Start the stream and verify it
- Review the input, output destination, stream key, codec, frame size, frame rate, bitrate, GOP, segment duration, and HDR color settings before starting.
- Start the Elemental Live event and check that the HLS output is being delivered and that YouTube receives the stream in Live Control Room.
- Check the event from an HDR-capable playback device to assess HDR appearance. YouTube may provide an SDR version to viewers on devices without HDR support.
The Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so it cannot reliably confirm how HDR will look to viewers. Use it to check stream arrival and status, not as a visual HDR quality test.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the current HLS endpoint, stream key, and HTTP method; confirm that the destination uses HTTPS and that the network permits delivery. If adapting AWS’s older example URL, verify the exact current endpoint syntax rather than guessing.
- HLS output is rejected or unstable: Check that segments are TS and 1–4 seconds long, playlists roll with at most five outstanding segments, requests use POST or PUT, and delivery does not use byte ranges or additional encryption.
- The stream is 4K but not recognized or displayed as HDR: Verify HEVC, 10-bit output, BT.2020 primaries and matrix, and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Ensure those values describe the source and output accurately; resolution alone is not HDR.
- HDR looks wrong: Confirm whether the source is HDR10/PQ or HLG and that the Elemental Live color workflow matches it. Avoid forcing HDR10 on SDR footage or mismatched HDR content. Do not use the Live Control Room preview to judge HDR colors.
- Playback buffers or quality is inconsistent: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s current recommendation for the selected codec and frame rate, and check the source frame rate and available uplink capacity. AWS’s 20 Mbps value is only its tutorial example.
- The appliance cannot produce the selected output: Check the installed Elemental Live version, appliance model, and license documentation. Requirements for Dolby Vision are not automatically requirements for HDR10.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping YouTube channel rather than a live camera production, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is a YouTube-only service for uploaded video, not a camera-ingest replacement for an Elemental Live HDR production workflow.
