Append a hash (#) and the destination section’s exact element ID to the full URL of the page. For example, if the page has <h2 id="setup">Setup</h2>, link to https://example.com/guide#setup. The browser opens that page and jumps to the matching element.
How to create a link to a section on another page
- Copy the full URL of the destination page, including its path.
- Find the ID on the heading or other element you want to link to. If you control the page and the element has no ID, add one, such as
id="payment-options". - Append
#followed by that exact ID, with no spaces:https://example.com/article#payment-options. - Use the resulting address as the link destination. In HTML, for example:
<a href="https://example.com/article#payment-options">Payment options</a>. - Open the link in a browser and confirm it jumps to the intended spot.
On the destination page, the target might be written as <h2 id="payment-options">Payment options</h2>. The text after # must match the element’s ID. Choose a unique, descriptive ID and avoid changing it after sharing the link. See MDN’s guide to URI fragments and its reference for the HTML anchor element.
Why the full destination URL matters
The part before # identifies the page; the fragment after it identifies a location within that page. Include the destination page’s path before the hash. A link containing only #payment-options refers to a spot in the current page, not a section on another page. The browser processes the fragment after retrieving the page, then navigates to a matching element ID. MDN describes how URI fragments work; the W3C’s HTML 4 documentation describes fragment matching, including case sensitivity.
If you cannot add an ID
Try a text fragment, which targets specified text without requiring the page author to add an ID. Its URL syntax starts with #:~:text=, followed by the target text. For example: https://example.com/article#:~:text=payment%20options. Browsers that support text fragments usually scroll to and highlight matching text, but support and behavior can vary. If the wording changes or the browser does not support the feature, the fragment may be ignored and the page may open at the top. MDN explains the text fragment format and behavior.

| Method | Requires access to edit the page? | Stability | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
Element ID, such as #payment-options |
You need an existing ID, or permission to add one. | Usually better for lasting links if the ID stays in place. | The fragment must match the target element’s ID. |
Text fragment, such as #:~:text=payment%20options |
No author-added markup is required. | Can stop working if the targeted wording changes. | Browser support and behavior can vary. |
Troubleshoot a link that opens at the top or misses the target
- Check the ID: Confirm the destination element still has the ID used after
#. Match its spelling and capitalization exactly; HTML fragment matching is case-sensitive. - Check the page address: Make sure the full destination page URL appears before the hash. A bare fragment such as
#setuppoints within the current page. - Check the text: If you used a text fragment, confirm the linked wording still appears on the page and try a browser that supports text fragments.
- Choose a more durable target: If you control the page, add an ID to the relevant heading or element. If you do not control it, a text fragment may work, but it is less reliable when the page changes.
