A language selector in Ghost is a set of theme links to language versions you have already configured. It does not translate posts or create translated counterparts: choose how your multilingual content will be organized first, then make the selector point to those destinations.
What a Ghost language selector does—and what it does not do
A selector is reader-facing navigation, usually placed in the theme’s header or menu. It might show “English” and “Deutsch,” with each label linking to the appropriate publication or locale section.

Ghost’s translate helper localizes text written in a theme according to the publication language set in Admin. Ghost says that helper is not for multilingual content sites; it does not translate posts or create paired versions of an article. See Ghost’s translation documentation.
That distinction matters: the selector is only as useful as its destinations. Decide whether languages live on separate Ghost publications, are handled through a localization service, or are organized as locale-specific sections within one publication.

Choose how your language versions will be organized
| Approach | Best fit | What it means for the selector |
|---|---|---|
| Separate Ghost install for each language | Different content is published in each language. Ghost explicitly recommends one install per language for this case. | Each language link points to the corresponding publication. Content and site settings are managed separately. |
| Localization service | The same content is published in multiple languages. Ghost’s translation guidance names WeGlot and Transifex as examples. | Confirm how the service’s translated output maps to Ghost pages and how the selector reaches each version; the cited guidance does not specify a universal setup. |
| Locale collections and tags in one install | You want distinct locale URL sections in a single publication and can manage routing and tag rules. | Offers control over locale paths but requires route and filter configuration. Ghost documents this as a routing pattern, not as an automatic translation or pairing feature. |
Ghost’s recommendations distinguish different-content sites from sites publishing the same content in multiple languages. The single-install collection pattern is a documented routing option, but it should not be mistaken for Ghost’s general recommendation for sites with different language-specific content. Details are in Ghost’s translation FAQ and routing documentation.
Set the publication language separately
In Ghost Admin, go to Settings → General → Publication language and select the language that describes the publication. Ghost says this setting tells search engines the content language. It is site metadata; it does not display a selector, translate content, or configure the destinations behind language links. See Ghost’s site setup guide.

Configure locale sections in one Ghost install
If you choose a single-install approach, Ghost’s routing documentation shows how collections can divide posts by a private locale tag. Its example uses a default collection that excludes the German tag and a German collection at /de/ that includes it:
collections:
/:
permalink: /{slug}/
template: index
filter: 'tag:-hash-de'
/de/:
permalink: /de/{slug}/
template: index-de
filter: 'tag:hash-de'
In Ghost, the private tag shown as #de is referenced in route filters as hash-de. Posts assigned that tag appear in the German collection; the default collection excludes them. The resulting German section has its own URL pattern, but the configuration does not identify which German post corresponds to a particular default-language post.
Ghost routes are configured in routes.yaml. The routing documentation describes uploading route configuration in Admin under Settings → Labs; check the instructions for your Ghost version before applying the change. Ghost also warns that route slugs can conflict with content slugs and that overlapping collection filters can cause rendering or pagination problems. Keep locale paths distinct and filters unambiguous. See Ghost’s URLs and dynamic routing documentation.
Add clear links in the theme
Once the destination structure exists, add links in a reader-facing theme area such as the navigation. Use visible language names—such as “English” and “Deutsch”—and link each to the intended publication or locale landing page. For a single-install setup like the example above, a German landing-page destination could be /de/.
Rank #4
If you want each article’s selector to open its translated counterpart rather than a language home or section, your implementation needs an explicit relationship between those posts. Ghost’s collection example does not provide automatic counterpart mapping. Decide what readers should see when a counterpart is unavailable, and make the link behavior reflect that choice; do not imply that Ghost will automatically detect a visitor’s language or find a corresponding post unless your actual setup does so.
What Ghost’s built-in interface translations mean
Ghost announced on November 5, 2024, that public-facing components were being translated for 60 languages, while warning that some translations could be incomplete. That is a dated announcement, not a verified current language count, and it concerns public-facing interface components—not automatic translation of a publication’s posts. See the Ghost internationalization changelog.
