Limit WordPress dashboard access by granting each user only the capabilities their work requires. Roles and capabilities control what users can do; hiding an admin menu or toolbar item does not, by itself, prevent access to the underlying feature. For selected-page redirects or a separate password gate on /wp-admin, use those as additional controls and test the site’s workflows afterward.
How WordPress dashboard access works
WordPress assigns users roles, and roles bundle capabilities: permissions such as editing posts or managing a site. A user’s effective access comes from the capabilities they have, not simply from which menu items appear on screen. Use the smallest set of capabilities that supports the user’s actual responsibilities.
WordPress has six predefined roles: Super Admin, Administrator, Editor, Author, Contributor, and Subscriber. Super Admin applies to multisite networks; the other roles cover different levels of site responsibility. Subscriber has only the read capability. Choose an access method for the task

Assign the least-privilege built-in role
- List the work each user must perform—for example, writing drafts, publishing posts, or managing site settings.
- Choose the least-privileged predefined role that supports those tasks. Avoid giving Administrator access just for convenience when a narrower role is sufficient.
- Sign in or test with an account assigned that role, and confirm that the necessary tasks work while unrelated actions remain unavailable.
Roles and capabilities are documented by WordPress.org. If a user’s work does not fit the built-in roles, consider a custom role rather than granting a broader role than necessary.

Use custom capabilities for narrower access
A custom role can bundle only the capabilities needed for a particular responsibility. Choose capabilities by what they permit, not by their names: WordPress cautions that edit_theme_options grants more than access to the Site Editor. Review the capability’s scope before assigning it. WordPress’s roles and capabilities reference explains the available permissions.
When custom code protects a function or page, enforce authorization where the operation happens with a capability check such as current_user_can(). Hiding a menu or toolbar item can make the interface simpler, but should not be treated as authorization. When to use a dashboard restriction plugin
A plugin can redirect users based on roles or capabilities and may let you preserve access to the profile page or selected admin pages. For example, the WordPress.org listing for Remove Dashboard Access documents role- or capability-based conditions and page exceptions. Review its settings and test them on your own site; the listing does not establish compatibility with every current WordPress version, plugin, or configuration.
- Check which roles or capabilities trigger the restriction.
- Confirm the redirect destination and whether users can still reach their profile or any required admin pages.
- Check how the plugin handles
admin-ajax.php. The cited plugin does not block it by default; changing that behavior may interfere with AJAX-powered front-end features. - Test the affected front end and admin tasks after enabling or changing restrictions.
When to add server-side password protection
Server-side password protection for /wp-admin adds a separate access barrier; it does not replace WordPress roles and capabilities. WordPress warns that this approach can break AJAX functionality, so test all relevant site workflows after enabling it. Consult the WordPress Developer Resources hardening guidance and your hosting or server documentation before applying it.

Disable dashboard file editing separately
If the concern is editing PHP files from the dashboard, WordPress documents the DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT setting as a limited defense-in-depth measure. It disables dashboard file editing but does not prevent malicious uploads. WordPress Developer Resources, in “Hardening WordPress,” states: “This will not prevent an attacker from uploading malicious files to your site, but might stop some attacks.” Do not treat this setting as a substitute for controlling user capabilities.
Verify access without breaking the site
After changing roles, capabilities, plugin rules, or server protections, test with an account that has the restricted access—not only as an administrator. Verify the intended work, profile access, permitted admin pages, front-end forms or other AJAX-dependent features, and any custom operations. If a necessary workflow fails, identify which permission or restriction controls it and adjust that control narrowly rather than broadly elevating the user’s role.
