To level a 3D printer bed, follow the procedure for your exact printer, then print a first-layer test and adjust the nozzle gap only if the pattern shows it needs correction. A bed that is mechanically aligned, a software leveling mesh, and a Z-offset are related but different: changing the wrong one can leave adhesion problems unsolved.
Before you adjust anything, identify the printer and leveling method
Check the printer model, build-plate type, and manufacturer’s calibration instructions first. Machines differ in adjustment points, probing routines, temperature requirements, menu names, and Z-offset direction. Do not transfer a paper-gap procedure or offset number from one printer to another unless its maker says it applies.
For a manually adjusted Creality Ender-3, the manual dated May 20, 2019, specifies this sequence:
- Auto-home the printer and disable the steppers as the manual directs.
- Move the nozzle over a corner adjustment point.
- Adjust that corner so a standard A4 sheet of paper lightly scratches between the nozzle and bed.
- Repeat at the other three corners, following the manual’s order.
- Repeat the four-corner check one or two times if needed, because adjusting one point can affect another.
This is an Ender-3-specific example, not a universal recipe. Creality’s Ender-3 V3 KE guidance emphasizes consistent friction rather than a precise paper thickness or force: “The exact amount of friction felt isn’t crucial, just as the amount of thermal expansion and exact width of the paper isn’t crucial. Just try to obtain the same amount of friction each time one runs the test.” Read Creality’s Ender-3 V3 KE bed-leveling instructions.

- 【Strong compatibility】Creality CR Touch auto leveling kit Compatible with PEI / sticker / glass / metal platform.
Check the plate, nozzle, and mechanics
Before running calibration, make sure the build plate is clean, flat on its mount, and seated correctly. If it is removable, check for debris beneath it. Remove filament residue from the nozzle if the printer’s instructions allow it, and check for loose or obstructed components using the model’s maintenance guidance.
- Grease or residue on the print surface can prevent adhesion even when the nozzle gap is right.
- Filament on the nozzle can interfere with homing or probing.
- A loose or obstructed nozzle, an incorrectly seated sheet, or custom start G-code can interfere with probing on some machines.
- Bed temperature and material-specific print settings can affect adhesion. Use the filament and plate maker’s guidance rather than assuming every failure is caused by leveling.
Creality’s K2/K2 Pro troubleshooting guidance recommends cleaning a dirty platform with dish soap and water and lists contamination, bed temperature, leveling, residual filament affecting homing, and compensation issues among possible causes. That cleaning advice is specific to those models; follow the care instructions for other plate coatings. Creality also recommends calibration when appropriate after a material change, printer movement, or firmware change. See Creality’s K2/K2 Pro first-layer troubleshooting guidance.

Use a first-layer test to diagnose nozzle height
Run the printer maker’s first-layer calibration print or another suitable single-layer test. Watch how adjacent lines meet the surface; the pattern is more useful than borrowing a numeric offset from another printer.
- Nozzle probably too high: Lines look rounded, loose, or separated, with gaps between them. Prusa also identifies gaps in the end square of its calibration pattern as a sign that the nozzle is set too high.
- Nozzle probably too low: Lines are pressed excessively flat, rough, or ridged, or the nozzle scrapes the surface. Prusa describes ridges between overly flattened lines as a sign of a setting that is too low; Creality’s K2/K2 Pro guidance also discusses scraping and layer compression.
- Pattern looks consistent, but the print still will not stick: Investigate surface contamination, print settings, bed temperature, or under-extrusion rather than continuing to change height. A visually sound first layer can still fail for reasons unrelated to the gap.
If the test points to a gap problem, make small, controlled adjustments with the printer’s own Z-offset or live-adjust control while the pattern prints, then inspect the result. Confirm the control’s direction before changing it: on the Prusa models covered by its Live Adjust Z guidance, a more negative value moves the nozzle closer to the bed. That convention and any displayed value are not universal. Prusa’s first-layer calibration guide and Live Adjust Z instructions show their model-specific examples.

- The 3D Touch auto leveling sensor is a device that uses the Hall defect to achieve leveling .The position of the point can be obtained by touching the point on the heated bed ,and then compensated by adjusting the Z-AXIS height during printing ,Printing can also be achieved even though the platform is not flat .
- Features simple, smart and precise. It could work with nearly any kind of bed materials, such as glasses, woods, metals and so on. The position of the point can be obtained by touching the point on the heated bed, and then compensated by adjusting the z-axis height during printing.
- The main functions and controls of 3D touch are the same as most auto bed leveling sensors, which consists of a RC servo and a micro switch,thus,3D printer touch can be used on almost every 3D printer control board.
- NOTE: Pulling/pushing hardly on the push-pin may damage Touch sensor and make it less accurate. Any problem when you receive the order, CONTACT US FIRST please!
- By using progressively designed solenoid and hall sensor, it can integrate high precision in such a simple structure. To make it more user-friendly and to bring you more enjoyable printing experience.
Know whether you need tramming, mesh leveling, or Z-offset
| Method | What it changes or measures | When it helps | How to check the result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Manual tramming | Mechanically aligns the bed plane with nozzle travel using adjustment points. | On printers designed for manual bed adjustment, when the bed needs mechanical alignment. | Follow the printer’s repeatable gap-check procedure, then print a first-layer test. |
| Mesh leveling | Measures surface variation across points and compensates for it in software. | When the printer supports a probe or other mesh-measuring system. | Confirm the machine completes its probing or calibration routine, then inspect a first-layer test. |
| Z-offset or live Z adjustment | Sets the nozzle’s distance from the print surface. | When a first-layer pattern shows the nozzle is too close or too far away. | Check that lines are neither loose and separated nor excessively flattened or ridged. |
These are complementary tools, not competing labels for the same adjustment. A mesh can compensate for measured variation, but it should not be assumed to fix every mechanical or sensor problem. Creality says K2/K2 Pro users should manually adjust an uneven bed to establish basic flatness before running leveling calibration. Creality’s K2/K2 Pro guide.
Procedures also vary within a manufacturer’s product range. Prusa says load-cell-equipped MK4/S, MK3.9/S, and XL/+ families calibrate the first layer automatically during mesh bed leveling after self-test; manual Live Z and steel-sheet profiles are not normally needed for those models. Other Prusa families have different mesh and bed-level correction options. Follow the instructions for the exact printer rather than inferring its controls from a related model. Prusa’s mesh bed leveling guide and load-cell calibration guidance describe the covered systems.

If the printer’s probing or leveling routine fails
A failed probe routine does not prove that the bed corners need adjustment. For the Prusa families covered by its troubleshooting guidance, check for filament residue on the nozzle or bed, make sure the steel sheet lies flat, and verify that the nozzle is not obstructed or loose. Custom start G-code, probe or load-cell issues, and wiring or mounting faults can also matter.
- Remove residue and confirm the sheet is correctly seated.
- Check the nozzle and nearby parts for obstruction or looseness, following the printer’s maintenance instructions.
- Review custom start G-code if the routine began failing after a configuration change.
- Run the manufacturer’s relevant calibration tests. If probing still fails, use the model-specific probe or load-cell inspection guidance rather than repeatedly changing bed height.
Do not press on the bed while it is probing. Prusa lists pressure during probing and debris as possible causes of retries. See Prusa’s probing-failure troubleshooting steps.

When a first-layer test is good but adhesion is not
If the test lines look consistent, avoid lowering the nozzle further just to make the print stick. Clean the surface using the plate maker’s instructions, check that the sheet is seated without debris beneath it, and verify bed temperature and filament settings. If extrusion appears intermittent or thin, investigate filament feed and under-extrusion; changing bed height will not correct an extrusion fault. Prusa’s first-layer guidance lists a dirty or greasy sheet, print settings, bed leveling or XYZ calibration, and under-extrusion as distinct possible causes.
For a damaged or unsuitable build surface, check that a replacement is compatible with the exact printer and surface system. A replacement plate is not the first remedy for ordinary contamination or a misadjusted gap.
