You can turn off iOS beta updates without erasing your iPhone, but that only stops future beta downloads; it does not remove the beta already installed. Apple’s documented erase-and-restore process installs the current public iOS version it offers—not a version you choose from a list. Its guidance does not guarantee that your specific iPhone can be restored to iOS 26. Before erasing anything, confirm the restore destination Apple offers for your device and make sure you have a usable pre-beta backup.
First decide what you mean by “downgrade”
There are two different outcomes: stop receiving beta updates, or erase the iPhone and reinstall a public iOS release. Turning off beta updates does not roll back the installed operating system. Apple’s restore instructions, in turn, describe installing the current publicly released iOS; they do not promise a way to select iOS 26.

| Stop future beta updates | Turn Beta Updates off in Settings. | The installed beta remains until a later public update or an erase-and-restore. |
| Remove the installed beta now | Use a computer to put the iPhone in recovery mode and choose Restore. | The phone is erased and Apple installs the current public iOS offered for it—not necessarily iOS 26. |
Apple Developer’s release listing showed iOS 27.0 released September 14, 2026, iOS 27.2 beta listed September 16, 2026, and iOS 26.6.2 listed September 8, 2026. Those listings do not establish that iOS 26.6.2—or any iOS 26 build—is installable on your particular iPhone. Apple Support’s beta removal instructions promise a restore to the current public release, not a selectable iOS 26 destination. Verify the options for your device with Apple before erasing it.

On iOS 16.4 or later, open Settings → General → Software Update → Beta Updates, then select Off. This prevents future beta updates from being offered, but leaves the currently installed beta on the phone. You will remain on it until a later public update is available or you restore the device.
#1 Best Overall
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
On older supported iOS versions, Apple’s route is Settings → General → VPN & Device Management, where you can remove the beta profile if one is present. The profile path applies to older versions; use the Beta Updates control on iOS 16.4 or later.
If the beta has expired and your iPhone offers a software update, Apple advises installing that update. Turning beta updates off is not a substitute for an update that the phone says it needs.

- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Option 2: Erase and restore the iPhone
Apple says removing an installed beta and installing the current public iOS requires erasing and restoring the device. In Apple’s words: “To remove the iOS or iPadOS beta and install the current publicly released version of iOS or iPadOS, you will need to erase and restore your device.” The restore can remove the beta, but Apple’s documented Restore control does not guarantee a return to iOS 26.

- Check the destination. Contact Apple or otherwise verify the restore options for your exact iPhone before proceeding if iOS 26 is essential. The existence of an iOS 26 release listing is not confirmation that Apple will offer it for your device.
- Check your backup. Prefer an archived backup made before installing the beta, while the iPhone was on an earlier iOS version. A backup made on beta may not restore to an earlier iOS version; without an archived pre-beta backup, your latest backup may not be usable.
- Plan for data loss. Recovery-mode Restore erases the iPhone. Confirm you can set it up again and that you have the account credentials needed afterward.
- Prepare a computer and cable. Use a Mac with the latest macOS or a computer with the Apple Devices app, and a data-capable cable compatible with both the iPhone and computer. Check what you already have before buying anything.
Restore using recovery mode
- Update the Mac or Apple Devices app on your computer, then connect the iPhone to the computer with the cable.
- On iPhone 8 or later, quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then press and hold the Side button until the recovery-mode screen appears.
- When the computer presents the recovery options, choose Restore. This erases the phone and installs the current non-beta iOS offered through Apple’s restore process.
- After the restore, set up the iPhone and restore from an archived backup made on an earlier iOS version, if available.
- If prompted, sign in to your Apple Account to turn off Activation Lock.
If the recovery download takes too long
If the download takes more than 15 minutes, the iPhone may leave the recovery-mode screen before it finishes. Let the download complete, then repeat the recovery-mode button sequence and continue the restore.

Can you specifically install iOS 26?
The available Apple guidance establishes how to leave beta and restore to the current public iOS, but it does not establish that every iPhone running iOS 27 beta can install iOS 26 or that the normal Restore control lets you select it. The iOS 26.6.2 entry in Apple Developer’s release listing is not proof of device-specific restore eligibility.
For that reason, do not erase your iPhone on the assumption that Restore will install iOS 26. Ask Apple to confirm the supported restore destination for your model and current build before starting. If Apple offers only the current public release, the documented process cannot promise the iOS 26 outcome you want.
