Learn React and TypeScript, then apply them inside a SharePoint Framework (SPFx) web part. The quickest practical route is to scaffold a React web part with Microsoft’s SharePoint Yeoman generator, run it with heft start in the SharePoint hosted workbench, and build from a simple interface toward SharePoint data, Microsoft Graph, and deployment.

Understand what React does in SPFx

SPFx is Microsoft’s client-side model for building SharePoint pages and web parts and extending Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Viva. It provides the runtime, context, manifests, packaging, and Microsoft 365 integration. React is one of the UI frameworks you can use within that model; SPFx also supports frameworks such as Handlebars, Knockout, Angular, and Vue.js. You are learning two related things: React for the interface, and SPFx for running and distributing that interface in Microsoft 365.

Microsoft describes SharePoint Online as having the broadest and most up-to-date SPFx support. SPFx is also Microsoft’s continuing extensibility model; retirement of the SharePoint add-in model does not mean SPFx is being retired.

Learn the prerequisites in the right order

You do not need to master every Microsoft 365 development topic before starting. Aim to be comfortable with the foundations below, then fill in gaps as your first web part requires them.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • JavaScript: functions, objects, arrays, modules, promises, and asynchronous code.
  • TypeScript: types, interfaces, classes, and how TypeScript adds type checking to JavaScript.
  • HTML and CSS: enough to create and style a responsive component.
  • React: components, props, state, hooks, and rendering lists and conditional content.
  • Developer tooling: npm, package files, and the basic idea of a build process.
  • SharePoint and Microsoft 365: the purpose of lists and libraries, and basic concepts of accounts and permissions.

If JavaScript or TypeScript is unfamiliar, spend time there before trying to debug generated SPFx code. If you already build React applications, focus first on how SPFx supplies context and packages the web part rather than repeating a general React course.

Set up the environment and create your first React web part

Use Microsoft’s environment setup and getting-started guidance for the SPFx release you intend to use. The documented toolchain includes npm, TypeScript, Yeoman, webpack, and Heft; follow the setup instructions for the chosen release rather than assuming a generic React tutorial’s tooling applies.

  1. Make a project directory and open a terminal in it.
  2. Start the SharePoint generator by running yo @microsoft/sharepoint.
  3. Choose the project options in the generator. Select Web Part as the component type and React as the framework.
  4. Start the project with heft start, following the generated project’s instructions if they specify additional setup.
  5. Open the SharePoint hosted workbench, add the web part, and inspect how the generated component renders.
  6. Change one thing at a time: edit the component’s markup, styling, or displayed data, then run it again. Trace how the web-part class hands information to the React component.

The scaffold is useful because it shows the boundary between an SPFx web-part class and the React component it renders. Read both rather than treating the generated files as a black box. The hosted workbench gives you a place to inspect the component in a SharePoint context; it is a development check, not proof that a finished solution has been deployed to a tenant.

Build from a small interface toward real SharePoint work

After the scaffold runs, learn one SPFx capability at a time. This sequence keeps the React interface separate from the Microsoft 365 concerns it will eventually need.

1. Make the React component understandable

Build a small interface with props and state before adding remote data. For example, render a list of mock items, show an empty state when the list is empty, and let a user change a filter. This helps you see what belongs in the component and how changes in state affect the rendered UI.

2. Add SharePoint data

Replace the mock items with data from a SharePoint list or library. Learn the data-access approach used by your project, including SharePoint REST or PnPjs, and handle loading, empty, and error states in the interface. Keep data-fetching logic distinct from the presentation where practical, so the component is easier to reason about and test.

3. Add Microsoft Graph when the feature needs it

Use Microsoft Graph for Microsoft 365 data or operations that fit Graph, rather than treating it as a mandatory first step. Learn what permissions the call requires and how authorization errors appear. Start with the least complex data source that satisfies the web part’s purpose.

4. Let authors configure the web part

Learn the SPFx property pane when a web part needs settings such as a title, selected list, or display option. The property pane is an SPFx authoring feature; React renders the resulting experience, but does not replace that configuration surface.

5. Explore UI libraries and hosting scenarios

Learn Fluent UI for reusable Microsoft-style interface components, using the package versions generated for your selected SPFx release. SPFx can also be used in Teams and Viva scenarios, but hosting a component in another Microsoft 365 surface adds context and integration considerations beyond rendering it in SharePoint.

6. Finish with quality and deployment

Before distributing a web part, learn how to test it, handle failures, consider performance, package the solution, and deploy it to the tenant. Explore SPFx extensions after you understand web parts: extensions serve other customization points and are not simply another name for a React web part.

Keep React and Fluent UI versions aligned with SPFx

Use the SPFx release as the compatibility anchor. The generated project’s package.json and the documentation for that release are more relevant than version numbers copied from a standalone React guide. SPFx component manifests declare package dependencies, and SharePoint Online uses that information when loading the required libraries.

Microsoft renamed Office UI Fabric to Fluent UI in early 2020, and its guidance has changed over time. Older SPFx material may mention Office UI Fabric or the sp-office-ui-fabric-core package; Microsoft Learn documents the latter’s introduction in the Yeoman React template with SPFx 1.8.2. Treat that as historical guidance, not a reason to add an old package to a new project.

For a time-sensitive example, Microsoft’s September 2026 Microsoft 365 Developer Blog roadmap update said the upcoming SPFx 1.24 release candidate planned to update the out-of-the-box React version to React 18.x. That is a roadmap statement, not a guarantee about every SPFx release or the current contents of a project. Check the release documentation and generated dependencies for the version you actually select.

Choose learning resources by what you need to build

Microsoft Learn is a sensible free starting point for the official setup and SPFx learning path. Its catalog covers areas including Graph, SharePoint content, property panes, extensions, and deployment. The catalog entry identified here was last updated February 19, 2024, so check the relevant module and release documentation for version-sensitive details.

Paid instructor-led options can make sense if you need a fixed schedule, guided exercises, or feedback. U2U and GOPAS offer training materials covering combinations of React, TypeScript, Fluent UI, Graph, and SPFx application work. Compare the actual course outline, instructor support, dates, location or delivery format, and current price before enrolling; schedules and prices can change. No single course is necessary to begin: a scaffolded project and Microsoft Learn provide a practical baseline.

Know when you are ready to build beyond a tutorial

You are ready to move from a practice component toward a useful solution when you can explain how the React component receives its inputs, retrieve the required data, show loading and failure states, and identify the SPFx release and dependencies the project uses. Before deployment, add the Microsoft 365 concerns the feature requires: permission planning, testing, packaging, and tenant deployment. Microsoft’s training catalog includes these topics alongside Graph, content, property panes, and extensions.
