To use less electricity without compromising food safety, first verify your refrigerator and freezer temperatures, then check the door seal, reduce time with the door open, cover food and liquids, and make sure the appliance has room to ventilate. Keep settings within the guidance for your model rather than turning the temperature up indiscriminately.
What temperature should your refrigerator be set to?
Check the temperature inside each compartment instead of relying only on the control dial: many refrigerators do not show actual internal temperature. An appliance thermometer is a simple way to verify it; consult the owner’s manual for your model’s recommended settings.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) recommends 36–40°F for a refrigerator and -5–0°F for a freezer in its residential refrigerator guidance. DOE’s 2022 Energy Saver guide gives a different refrigerator range, 35–38°F, and recommends 0°F for a stand-alone freezer for long-term storage. Follow the recommendation applicable to your appliance and use a thermometer to check the result; these published ranges are not identical.
The goal is to avoid needless overcooling while keeping food at safe temperatures. Do not raise the setting beyond safe guidance to chase a lower electricity bill.

How can you tell if the refrigerator door seal is leaking?
A poor seal can let cold air escape and make the refrigerator work harder. Try this check around the door:
- Close the door on a strip of paper or a bill, leaving half inside and half outside.
- Pull the paper. If it slides out easily, inspect the seal and door closure at that spot.
- If the gasket needs replacement, find one compatible with your refrigerator’s exact model. Also investigate whether the latch or door alignment is preventing a firm closure.
The paper check is a practical indication, not a measurement of energy loss. Refer to your manual or a qualified appliance service provider if you cannot identify or correct the problem.

Which everyday habits reduce wasted cooling?
Keep the door closed
Decide what you need before opening the door, and avoid leaving it open while preparing food. Repeated or prolonged openings allow cold air to escape.
Cover food and liquids
Cover stored food and liquids. This is a straightforward DOE-recommended practice that helps limit moisture released into the refrigerator.

Leave room for airflow
Leave a few inches behind the refrigerator for airflow. Keep the appliance out of direct sunlight and away from heat-producing appliances, which can add to the cooling load. Check the manual for any model-specific clearance requirements.
Does cleaning refrigerator coils save energy?
It depends on the refrigerator. DOE advises keeping condenser coils clean on older models, but coil location and safe cleaning procedures vary. Check the owner’s manual before cleaning; use a coil brush only if the manual permits it and explains how to access the coils. Do not assume that every modern refrigerator has user-serviceable coils.

If you have a manual-defrost freezer, DOE and ENERGY STAR’s 2021 Consumer Guide to Kitchen Appliances advises defrosting periodically and not allowing frost to build up beyond one-quarter inch.

If replacement is under consideration, compare specific models rather than relying on a generic savings estimate. DOE’s 2022 Energy Saver guide says a refrigerator more than 10 years old could save hundreds of dollars each year if replaced with a new ENERGY STAR certified model. That is a broad published claim, not a prediction for an individual home: utility rates, the old appliance’s condition and usage, and the replacement’s price all affect whether a purchase makes sense.

Use these comparison points when evaluating candidates:
- Annual energy use and estimated cost: Compare the annual kWh and estimated operating cost shown on each EnergyGuide label. Local electricity rates affect your actual bill.
- ENERGY STAR qualification: Check whether the specific model is certified; a brand name alone does not establish that a refrigerator qualifies.
- Capacity: Buy the size your household needs rather than paying to cool unused space. DOE’s 2022 guide says the most efficient models are usually 16–20 cubic feet and that larger units use more energy; this is a general pattern, not a guarantee about every model.
- Configuration and features: DOE’s 2022 guide says top-freezer models are more efficient than side-by-side or bottom-freezer models. Compare similar models and account for features such as ice and water dispensers rather than treating freezer layout as the only factor.

Those figures are not current local household bill estimates. Utility rebates or incentives may be available in some locations, but availability varies.
