Choose comfortable, waterproof footwear with good tread, then pair it with wool or synthetic socks. Match the shoes to what you’ll do: walking shoes or boots for sightseeing, supportive footwear suited to the trail for hiking, and separate footwear for river crossings. Iceland’s wind, rain and cold can make feet uncomfortable in any season, so check conditions before you go and bring dry socks for longer or wet outings.
Choose footwear for your plans
Start with the route and surface, not with a particular boot style. Compare footwear by its waterproofness for the exposure you expect, grip for the terrain, support and comfort for the distance, and room for warm socks without a tight fit. No single boot height or construction suits every Iceland itinerary.
Sightseeing and everyday walking
For towns, viewpoints and ordinary walks, choose comfortable, broken-in waterproof walking shoes or boots with grip. Heavy mountaineering boots are not necessary for every visitor; comfort and traction should suit the places and distances on your itinerary.

For trails, wear sturdy footwear with tread and support appropriate to the route. SafeTravel Iceland advises warm, waterproof shoes and wool or synthetic socks in its clothing guidance. Check the route and current conditions rather than assuming that one kind of boot is right for every hike.
#1 Best Overall
- Waterproof material: Men's snow boots feature waterproof construction and windproof synthetic toe caps for anti-collision.
- 200g high-quality insulation materiel: Keeps your feet warm and dry even when the temperature is -25F.
- Removable Insole: The insole can be removed and washed to keep your feet warm, dry and comfortable. The fluffy and comfortable pile fabric quickly absorbs sweat and moisture. Its soft cushions are used to soften the impact of walking and reduce fatigue.
- Isulated: An insulated warm comfy lining provides better protection in bad weather. Perfect for daily life in the winter and outdoor sports like skiing, mountaineering, cycling, etc.
- Durable & Slip Resistant: The rubber outsole is stable, slip & abrasion resistant, and flexible to various outdoor terrain.
Persistent rain, river crossings and ice
Rubber boots can be convenient for some outings in persistent rain, but they are not a substitute for supportive hiking footwear on demanding trails. River crossings call for a different choice: SafeTravel’s hiking guidance suggests special wading shoes, sandals or trainers rather than crossing barefoot. A shoe choice alone does not make a river crossing safe.
On icy winter surfaces, crampons may add security, but Iceland Travel says they are not always necessary. Use traction aids only when they suit the surface, route and current local conditions; its clothing guide also recommends waterproof shoes with good tread in winter.

Pair shoes with socks that stay warm when damp
Wear wool or synthetic socks rather than cotton for outdoor activity. SafeTravel recommends these materials and thin wool or synthetic base layers; cotton is not its recommended outdoor base layer. Carry a dry spare pair for a longer outing or when wet conditions are likely, and change into them if your socks become damp.
Make sure your shoes still fit comfortably with the socks you plan to wear. A crowded fit can undermine warmth and comfort, so there is no reason to assume that thicker or doubled socks are always better.

Prepare for changing weather in every season
Do not judge foot protection by the calendar alone. SafeTravel warns that “The combination of wind, rain and cold temperature is often underestimated” and says hypothermia is a real danger even in summer. The Environment Agency of Iceland also notes that temperatures can fall below freezing during summer, especially at night.
As broad context—not a forecast for your destination or travel date—Iceland Travel describes average winter temperatures as just below 0°C in the darkest winter months and summer averages around 10–15°C. The Environment Agency’s traveller safety guidance says temperature drops on average by 0.6°C (1°F) for each 100 metres (330 ft.) of elevation; the page does not state a publication year.

Check conditions before setting out
Check the weather forecast and route conditions before walks and hikes, and reassess if conditions change. SafeTravel advises checking weather daily and carrying rain- and windproof layers even on short hikes. A same-day forecast and local route information are more useful than seasonal averages when deciding what to wear.
