If worship music is audible in the sanctuary but missing from the livestream, first check the OBS Audio Mixer while the music plays. A flat meter points to a problem before OBS receives the signal; a moving meter means to check OBS routing, filters and stream-track assignment, then verify the actual viewer’s stream. YouTube copyright interruptions are a separate issue and should be checked in YouTube Studio, not treated as an OBS audio fault.

Why does my OBS stream have no audio?

Start with the OBS Audio Mixer during a representative song passage. The meter is a useful branching clue: it shows whether audio is reaching OBS, but it does not prove that the source is routed to the stream or that the remote viewer can hear it.

  • The relevant meter stays flat: troubleshoot the source, device selection, physical or USB connection, and mixer routing before changing stream output.
  • The meter moves but the stream is silent: inspect mute state, filters, stream-track assignment and the remote playback path.
  • OBS still shows audio but YouTube interrupts or replaces the stream: investigate the platform’s live dashboard and copyright notices separately.

A peak/PPM meter may decay after a sound ends; do not mistake its fall-off for an ongoing signal. Watch what the input indicator does during the quiet part of the song itself. OBS also notes that its input meter is before the fader but after filters, so a filter can affect what the meter shows.

How to trace the audio during a song

  1. Reproduce the problem. During rehearsal, play a representative section that includes quiet passages and transitions. Keep the source and OBS visible or have someone monitor each point.
  2. Check the signal near its source. Confirm the music is actually playing and use the mixer’s headphone or monitor output, if available, to confirm that the intended channel has signal.
  3. Check the OBS Audio Mixer. Identify the source expected to carry the music and watch its meter through the quiet section. This divides the investigation into an upstream signal problem or an OBS/stream-path problem.
  4. Record a normal rehearsal and listen back. OBS recommends listening at the device and again in OBS, and recording a normal session for playback. A recording helps reveal whether the failure is present in the captured mix.
  5. Check the live viewer path. When available, make a private or unlisted test and ask someone at a different location to listen on another device. A local PA or control-room monitor does not confirm what the encoded stream delivers.

If the OBS meter is flat, fix the signal before OBS

Confirm playback and the selected device

Make sure the music source is playing, then confirm that OBS is capturing the device receiving that audio—not a different output, microphone or inactive input. Exact labels vary by OBS version and operating system. If you added an Audio Input/Output Capture source in a scene, verify that it points to the intended device.

Trace the mixer route

Check the music channel’s assignment, the mixer’s bus or USB send, and the master routing that feeds the computer. A channel can sound through the sanctuary PA while its USB or stream send is muted, assigned to another bus, or not included in the output connected to OBS. Monitor at the mixer and then check whether the same signal reaches OBS.

Use filters as a diagnostic

Because OBS’s input meter is after source filters, temporarily disable that source’s filters during rehearsal to see whether one is suppressing the incoming signal. Change one thing at a time and repeat the same passage; restore filters that are not responsible.

If the OBS meter moves, inspect OBS routing and processing

Check mute and stream-track assignment

Confirm that the music source is not muted and is assigned to the audio track used by the stream. A source can show activity in the mixer yet be excluded from the track being sent to the streaming destination. Compare the source’s track assignment with the track selected for streaming in your OBS output settings; names and control locations can differ between versions.

Look for duplicate device capture

If the same device is active in OBS global audio settings and also added as an Audio Input/Output Capture source in a scene, you may be capturing it twice. OBS warns that capturing the same device both ways can create echo. Keep one intended route and test again.

Bypass a speech-oriented gate or suppression filter

A noise gate is designed to reduce background audio when it falls below its close threshold. If its threshold is too high for a quiet musical passage, it can cut off notes or fade the music into silence. During rehearsal, bypass the gate on the affected source and replay the same quiet section. If the music returns, tune the gate to the actual signal instead of copying settings intended for speech. Review noise suppression too: speech-focused processing may be unsuitable for full-band music.

Make a single filter change at a time and compare the same passage. OBS’s technical page identifies -20 dBFS as its Alignment Level and -9 dBFS as its Permitted Maximum Level; these are meter/alignment details, not a universal target mix for every church. Do not raise gain blindly to compensate for a routing or gate problem.

Why can I hear the worship music in church but not on the livestream?

The sanctuary PA and livestream are separate signal paths. The room may receive a channel or bus that OBS does not, while OBS may capture a mix that is never played through the room speakers. Monitor both points: listen near the source or mixer, then check the signal in OBS and on the remote stream.

Use headphones or another private output for stream monitoring rather than routing the delayed livestream back through the sanctuary PA. That delay can send a duplicate, out-of-time signal into the room. For equipment guidance, WorshipMetrics offers church-specific operational suggestions; OBS documentation is the source for OBS controls and platform documentation for YouTube policy.

Can YouTube mute worship music during a live stream?

Yes, YouTube may interrupt a live stream when its system identifies third-party content. YouTube Help says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If OBS continues to show the music while viewers see an interruption, placeholder or platform warning, inspect the YouTube Studio live dashboard and copyright notice.

For material the church has licensed, check the relevant rights and ask the rights owner about its procedures. YouTube says licensed content can still be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. A general church music license should not be assumed to clear a specific platform event automatically. Copyright is not the diagnosis unless dashboard notices or stream behavior support it; a flat OBS meter points elsewhere.

What equipment should you check before buying anything?

Most troubleshooting starts with the gear already installed. Identify the failed point in the signal path before buying a cable, interface or headphones; new equipment will not fix a muted mixer send, incorrect track assignment, overactive gate or platform interruption.

Option What to check When it may help
Monitoring headphones Comfort for long services, closed-back isolation in a noisy control room, wired connection compatibility and durability. When you need private, reliable monitoring at the source or control position.
Audio interface Input type and count, compatibility with the existing mixer connection, driver and operating-system support, and whether the mixer already provides USB audio. Only when the current console does not provide a suitable connection to the computer.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is for a different use case: keeping uploaded videos live on YouTube around the clock, rather than capturing a live church service from OBS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
