For a smooth 24/7 YouTube music stream, handle two separate handoffs: use OBS scene transitions for changes in the on-screen layout, and configure and test your playlist so one song or video gives way cleanly to the next. A fade cannot prevent a playback pause, encoder interruption, or network failure. This guide covers both jobs, YouTube delivery settings, rehearsal, rights, and continuity planning.
What “smooth transitions” means in a music stream
A scene transition changes the visual layout viewers see—for example, moving from a title card to album artwork. A media handoff changes the playing file or track. They are related in the finished broadcast, but they need separate configuration and testing. Neither one repairs a dropped encoder or unstable connection.
- Visual transition: an OBS effect such as Fade or Cut between scenes.
- Media handoff: the change between items in a playlist or between media sources.
- Delivery continuity: whether the encoder and connection keep sending a healthy stream to YouTube.
OBS documents scene transitions in its OBS Studio Overview Guide and playlist behavior in its Media Sources guide. YouTube separately recommends preflight testing and monitoring stream health.

Configure a looping playlist
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source and select the files for the programme playlist. OBS’s VLC source supports playlists and a loop option; confirm the exact controls in the version you have installed.
- Enable looping if the programme should repeat. Check the playlist order and verify that every file plays with its intended audio and visuals.
- Test each boundary between files. Listen for a pause, abrupt level change, missing audio, or unexpected black frame. A playlist that loops is not proof that every handoff is gapless.
Be careful when unloading inactive sources
OBS notes that closing an inactive file source can reduce resource use, but reloading it when it becomes visible may take time. If a source must reappear immediately, test the behavior before going live; disable unloading for that source if the reload causes a visible or audible pause. Do not assume that a scene fade will hide a media source’s loading delay.

Choose and preview the visual transition
Use Fade for a gradual change or Cut for a direct one
OBS includes Fade and Cut transitions by default, and you can configure transition duration. A fade can suit a gradual visual change; a cut can suit a deliberate direct switch. There is no universal duration prescribed for Indian music streams: choose a timing that fits the visuals and programme, then judge it in a preview.
Preview before sending the scene live
- Name scenes clearly so the operator can identify the intended layout quickly.
- In OBS Studio Mode, prepare the next scene in preview while the current scene remains on air.
- Watch the transition at normal viewing size. Check that artwork, text, and other overlays remain legible and that the change does not expose an empty or unintended scene.
- Take the scene live only after the preview looks right. Rehearse changes that will recur during the stream.
Studio Mode is for preparing a visual scene before sending it to viewers; it does not test the media playlist or guarantee uninterrupted delivery.

Set encoder delivery for a stable stream
Match settings to the connection and content
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Choose a resolution and bitrate your encoder and measured upload connection can sustain continuously, rather than selecting a high setting simply because it is available.

For H.264, YouTube lists 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular broadband or mobile connection in India can sustain them. Recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. Run a speed test and leave room for connection variation.

Use a consistent keyframe interval
YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. OBS also says a consistent interval can help its automatic quality selection move between renditions without interruption. Keyframes concern delivery and quality switching; they do not create or improve an OBS scene fade.
RTMP/RTMPS is the practical default for a typical OBS setup
YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, but it has specific format requirements and relatively higher latency. YouTube describes it as aimed at encoder vendors, so it is not the default choice for a typical OBS operator. See Google’s HLS ingestion guide if your encoder workflow specifically requires it.

Rehearse the complete programme before going live
- Play the actual playlist, or representative files, through the planned scene changes.
- Test audio and movement similar to the real programme. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators before committing to a long session.
- After starting, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. A clean local OBS preview alone does not establish that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.

Plan for failures, archives, and music rights
Do not assume an unattended setup is failproof
A 24/7 local setup depends on the computer, encoder, power, and network continuing to work. Plan who will respond to a failure or how it will be detected; the cited OBS and YouTube guidance does not promise unattended uptime. A scene transition or playlist loop cannot recover a failed connection by itself.

Keep a recording if you need a complete archive
YouTube’s live production guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and advises recording longer sessions for manual upload. Because this is operational guidance that may change, verify the current behavior in YouTube Studio before relying on an automatic archive. Clear the rights for the music and video
Having a local copy of a track, or making its transition seamless, does not grant permission to stream it. YouTube’s production guidance advises securing clearances for the stream, rebroadcast, and on-demand audio and video. It does not set out India-specific licensing terms. Check with the applicable rights holders and obtain professional advice for your use, including any replay or rebroadcast.
