You can keep using a Chromebook after its final update, but it no longer receives ChromeOS or browser updates, so it is not as well protected as a supported device. First check the exact model’s update schedule. If support has ended, consider an eligible extended-update option or replace it with a Chromebook that still receives automatic updates; use an unsupported device only with a clear understanding of the risk.
Check whether your Chromebook has reached its final update
Update support varies by device, so do not estimate it from the purchase date. On the Chromebook, open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule. Google describes the device-specific schedule as the most reliable way to gauge its age and remaining official support. See Google’s steps for checking Chromebook updates and its guidance on using or upgrading an old Chromebook.
If the schedule displays “Final software update,” Google says the device “won’t receive ChromeOS and browser updates anymore.” That means ongoing security and browser fixes are no longer delivered through the regular update channel. Read Google’s explanation of the Chromebook update schedule.
If the Chromebook belongs to a workplace or school, an administrator may manage the update notice. Ask the organization’s administrator about the device’s update policy and whether an extended-update option is available.

Is it safe to keep using a Chromebook after updates end?
Continued use is possible, but an unsupported Chromebook should not be treated as equivalent to a supported one. Google says, “You can continue using your computer but should consider upgrading.” The UK National Cyber Security Centre takes a more cautious security position, recommending that users replace devices after automatic updates end because updates and technical support have stopped. See the NCSC’s ChromeOS guidance.
The practical choice depends on what you do with the device. Using it for sensitive accounts, payments, work, or important personal information makes the loss of ongoing browser and operating-system updates particularly consequential. If you keep it temporarily, avoid relying on it for tasks where you need the protection and support of a currently updated device. No source establishes a specific level of risk for every post-update Chromebook, so there is no universal period for which continued use can be called safe.

What to do if you want to keep the Chromebook
Check for extended updates
Some devices may offer extended updates. Google says these provide continued security, performance, and stability support, but opting in removes Android apps and the Google Play Store. Check the exact device’s eligibility and understand the feature loss before choosing this path; availability and consequences can depend on the model. See Google’s extended-updates information.
Keep use limited if support has ended
If no extended-update option applies and you are not ready to replace the device, treat continued use as a temporary compromise rather than a supported setup. The central limitation remains: Google no longer supplies ChromeOS and browser updates after the final update. Do not assume that ordinary safe-browsing habits restore the protections those updates provide.

When replacement is the clearest option
If you need continued ChromeOS support without changing operating systems, replacing the old device with a currently supported Chromebook is the most straightforward path. Check the new model’s update schedule before buying; a recent purchase date alone does not tell you how long that particular device will receive updates. Google’s advice is to consider upgrading, and the UK NCSC recommends a new device after AUE.
Google announced in 2023 that Chromebooks would receive 10 years of automatic updates after platform release, with the policy beginning in 2024. The announcement also described an option for older devices already in use to extend updates after their last automatic update. This policy is not a substitute for checking a specific Chromebook’s schedule: use the date and eligibility shown for the actual model. Read Google’s automatic-update policy announcement.

Why ChromeOS Flex or Linux is not an automatic fix
Changing operating systems may be a technical alternative, but compatibility and ongoing maintenance must be established for the exact device. Google’s ChromeOS Flex installation page presents Flex for PCs and Macs; it does not establish that any Chromebook can be converted or that a particular Chromebook’s hardware will work. See Google’s ChromeOS Flex information.
Likewise, Linux should not be treated as a universal route to a safely maintained Chromebook. Suitability depends on the model, installation requirements, and who will provide future security updates. Do not proceed on the assumption that installing another system automatically restores the Chromebook’s original support or functionality.

Choose a path based on support, features, and effort
- Extended updates: may continue support where offered, but remove Android apps and Google Play; verify eligibility first.
- Replacement Chromebook: retains the familiar ChromeOS route; verify the new model’s update schedule.
- ChromeOS Flex or Linux: conditional technical options; confirm model compatibility, maintenance, and the work involved before changing systems.
- Keep using the unsupported device: possible, but without regular ChromeOS and browser updates; do not consider it equivalent to a supported Chromebook.
Compare the cost of replacement with the old device’s condition and your needs. There is no single right answer for every owner, but if continued security updates are essential and an eligible extended-update path is unavailable, replacement is the clearest supported ChromeOS choice.
