To keep SteamVR’s Chaperone boundary visible in your headset, leave the play-area boundary enabled and, if you need it to stay on continuously, turn on Force Bounds in OpenVR Advanced Settings. Then make a short local recording using the exact mirror or capture source you plan to stream: whether the boundary appears in the video depends on the capture path, and the available documentation does not establish a universal setting to hide it from the stream while keeping it visible in VR.
Choose between SteamVR’s normal warning and persistent bounds
SteamVR’s default Chaperone behavior is a grid that appears as you approach your configured play-area boundary; it is not documented as a continuously visible wall. Valve describes the system as visible boundaries inside VR intended to help users avoid collisions. Steam Support’s Chaperone FAQ explains the default behavior, while Valve’s OpenVR Driver API Documentation describes its purpose.
- Need only a proximity warning? Keep SteamVR’s play-area boundary enabled and use its normal behavior.
- Need the bounds to remain visible in-headset? OpenVR Advanced Settings documents a Force Bounds control for keeping Chaperone bounds always on.
Keep the boundary visible in your headset
- Open SteamVR’s play-area or Chaperone controls and confirm the boundary has not been disabled. SteamVR’s default grid appears when you approach the configured boundary.
- For persistent bounds, open the OpenVR Advanced Settings Chaperone page and enable Force Bounds.
- Adjust Visibility and Fade Distance so the boundary is clear enough for your headset and room. The project documentation describes visibility as adjustable from 30% to 100% opacity; it says a fade distance of zero makes the bounds completely invisible.
- Do not choose Disable Chaperone when you want the boundary to remain visible. The project documents that option as setting fade distance to zero.
OpenVR Advanced Settings is additional software, and its exact interface and availability can change. Consult its project documentation if the labels or layout differ from those above.
Verify what viewers will see in the recording
Seeing Chaperone in the headset does not prove it will appear in your stream. The reviewed SteamVR, Valve, and OpenVR Advanced Settings documentation does not establish whether OBS, SteamVR’s mirror, or a particular game capture includes the boundary, or whether a universal control can omit it from the video while preserving it in VR.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Set up the capture source, mirror, and layout you intend to use for streaming.
- Make a brief local recording before going live.
- Check the recording and the headset view separately: confirm the boundary is visible to you and note whether it appears in the captured video.
- If you switch between SteamVR’s mirror and a game’s own mirror, make another test recording; their behavior is not established as identical.
Keep the play area safe
A visible boundary is only a safety aid. Steam Support warns that Chaperone may not appear soon enough during fast movement and is not a substitute for clearing the play area or having a spotter. Keep the space free of obstacles rather than relying on the grid alone.
Which settings path should you use?
| Path | What it offers | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| SteamVR play-area or Chaperone settings | Check and customize the normal boundary behavior; the default grid appears as you approach the boundary. | The Steam Support FAQ does not document an explicit always-on control or a separate stream-capture control. |
| OpenVR Advanced Settings | Documented controls include Force Bounds, visibility/opacity, fade distance, and proximity-warning settings. | It is additional software; its exact interface can change, and its documentation does not establish independent visibility for a stream capture. |
For either path, judge the result by three separate outcomes: whether the boundary stays visible in-headset, whether it is easy to see, and whether your actual recording includes it.
