A VSIX can contain files that are absent from the source files you reviewed, so check the installable package—not only the repository—before distributing an extension. VS Code’s documented safeguards include a VSCE scan for .env files during packaging and a Marketplace scan when an extension is newly published, but neither is a guarantee that every credential in every generated file will be found. The available evidence does not establish a specific extension incident or prove that embedded secrets were eliminated, so this guide presents a reproducible release workflow rather than an unverifiable first-person case study.
What a VSIX contains—and why it is the release boundary
VSCE (Visual Studio Code Extensions) is Microsoft’s command-line tool for packaging, publishing, and managing extensions. Running vsce package from an extension’s root creates an installable .vsix file. VS Code supports VSIX distribution for testing, private sharing, and distribution without publishing through the Marketplace; users can install the package through the Extensions view or command line. See Microsoft’s publishing guide.
The package is what recipients install. Depending on the extension’s build and packaging configuration, it can include generated JavaScript, configuration, assets, and other files—not just the tracked source you inspected. Therefore, treat the actual VSIX intended for release as the artifact to review. Platform-specific packages and VSCE options can affect the result, so follow the configuration and command appropriate to your project rather than assuming one command produces the same package in every setup.

Separate bundled credentials from user-provided secrets
There are two different security problems: preventing a developer credential from shipping inside the extension, and storing a secret that a user supplies while the extension runs. The first is a packaging and release-hygiene issue: a credential embedded in a distributed file may be recoverable by package recipients. The second is runtime storage.

For passwords and secrets that an extension needs to persist for a user, VS Code’s API guidance recommends SecretStorage. It warns against using ExtensionContext.workspaceState or globalState for secrets because those stores keep data in plaintext. SecretStorage helps with a user-provided runtime secret; it does not remove a developer key that has already been included in JavaScript, configuration, or another shipped file. See the VS Code documentation on remote extensions and secret storage.
Check the package before distribution
Use a release check that follows the artifact through packaging. The exact build and VSCE options depend on the extension, so these checks are workflow recommendations rather than a prescribed Microsoft inspection command.

- Build the release version. Run the project’s documented build steps and packaging configuration for the intended version and target platform.
- Package the extension. From the extension root, use the project’s appropriate VSCE packaging command to create the VSIX. Note which artifact and build configuration you are checking.
- Inspect the VSIX contents. Review the files inside the generated package, including compiled output and generated assets. Look for credentials, private configuration, and files that should not ship. Do not assume that a clean source-tree review proves the generated package is clean.
- Scan the release artifact. Apply your team’s secret-detection checks to the files actually included in the package. Review findings in context; a scan supplements, rather than replaces, an artifact review and release process.
- Rebuild and repeat after changes. If you remove or replace a credential, generate a fresh package and check that artifact. Checking only the source change does not establish what the new VSIX contains.
- Handle any exposed credential. If a real credential reached a package, assess who could access it and rotate or revoke it as appropriate. Removing it from a later build does not undo exposure of an earlier distributed package.
What VSCE and Marketplace scans do—and do not establish
Microsoft’s extension runtime security documentation says VSCE scans .env files during packaging and blocks publishing if secrets are found. It also says the Marketplace scans each newly published extension for secrets such as API keys or credentials and blocks publication when secrets are detected.
Those are useful safeguards, but the documented VSCE scope is specifically .env files. The page does not establish that VSCE scans every file, every compiled bundle, or every kind of credential in a VSIX. Nor does a Marketplace check replace review of a package that may be shared privately or manually. Check the release artifact yourself and treat the platform checks as additional controls.

The same documentation describes malware scanning and extension signature verification. Malware screening and package integrity or source verification serve different purposes from secret detection; neither should be interpreted as proof that a package contains no credentials.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where enterprise controls fit
Organizations managing VS Code can use the documented enterprise controls to allow or block extensions by publisher, extension, version, and platform. Microsoft says support for these controls starts with VS Code 1.96; see the enterprise extension management guide. These controls govern which extensions are installable in managed environments. They do not remove credentials from an extension package, so they are a distribution policy layer rather than a fix for an exposed key.
