To prevent clipping, make sure the podcast audio does not overload anywhere in the playback-to-stream chain. Test representative episode audio through the same player, mixer or interface, and encoder settings you plan to use; preview the stream in YouTube Live Control Room; and monitor the live audio. YouTube specifies audio encoding options, but the cited guidance does not set a clipping-prevention loudness target or limiter threshold.
Separate audio level from encoder settings
Clipping is an audio-level problem: it occurs when a signal overloads somewhere in the chain. Choosing an encoder codec or bitrate does not by itself prevent that overload. Treat these as two separate checks: keep the program audio from clipping, then confirm that the encoder is delivering audio in a supported format.
YouTube lists AAC and MP3 as supported audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS streams. Its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 kbps for stereo. These are delivery settings, not a loudness target or a guarantee that the source audio will not clip. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Test the full playback-to-stream chain
- Use representative audio. Choose an episode passage that reflects the material you will actually stream, including sections that sound louder or denser than the rest.
- Use the intended signal path. Play the passage through the same player and audio route planned for the live stream. Include the mixer, interface, external processor, and encoder if they are part of that setup.
- Test the stream, not just the source file. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the real stream. Listen to the resulting stream output rather than assuming a file that sounds fine locally will behave identically after playback and encoding. See YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance.
- Preview before going live. Check the stream in Live Control Room before starting the public stream, and listen for distortion or unexpected level changes. YouTube recommends previewing and monitoring stream quality; see Streaming tips and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Recheck after changes in an always-on setup
Repeat the representative-audio test if you change the episode source, player gain, mixer or interface, or encoder configuration. This is a practical way to apply YouTube’s test-and-monitor guidance to a stream that runs continuously; YouTube’s cited pages do not prescribe a particular retesting schedule.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual Channel or Linked Stereo Operation
- 1/4-Inch TRS And XLR Balanced Inputs
- Stereo Mode Balance Control
- Selectable Auto/ Manual Attack/Release
- Precise Led Level Meters
While the stream is running, continue monitoring audio quality. YouTube provides live stream metrics, but those metrics should not be treated as a substitute for listening to the program audio. See YouTube’s live stream metrics guide.
When to consider a limiter
An external audio limiter, or a compressor/limiter, may be an option if it fits the signal chain you already use. YouTube’s guidance recognizes encoder workflows involving external audio hardware, but it does not prescribe a processor, model, purchase, threshold, attack or release setting. Choose based on whether the processor fits your existing route and whether testing and monitoring show that it addresses the problem without adding needless setup complexity.

The cited YouTube pages do not establish a recommended integrated-loudness target, true-peak ceiling, limiter threshold, or click-by-click limiter setup for prerecorded podcast playback. Avoid treating any particular numeric peak value as a YouTube requirement.
Troubleshoot clipping or distorted stream audio
- The episode sounds clean, but the stream distorts: Test through the full intended playback and encoder path. A clean source file alone does not establish that every later stage is free of overload.
- Only some episodes sound distorted: Test the louder or denser passages from the affected episode and check whether the source differs from the episodes that play cleanly.
- The problem starts after a setup change: Recheck the player gain, mixer or interface route, and encoder configuration, then preview the stream before relying on it.
- The encoder audio settings look correct, but clipping remains: Codec, sample rate, and bitrate are delivery settings; they do not establish that the playback signal level is safe. Listen to the stream output and investigate the signal path.
- You cannot identify where distortion enters: Test the same representative passage through successive parts of the chain, then compare the playback with the previewed stream. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but its cited instructions do not provide a specific diagnostic procedure for locating clipping.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream built from uploaded podcast episodes, StreamNeo keeps the playback running in the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. The steps are:
