When a 24/7 YouTube radio stream goes silent, check the OBS mixer meter for the affected source first. A still meter usually means audio is not reaching OBS; an active meter alongside dropped frames or disconnections points instead to the stream connection. Identify where the signal disappears before changing settings.
First, tell an audio-source failure from a connection failure
Look at the meter for the relevant source in the active OBS scene while the silence is happening.

OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide associates dropped frames with a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. A network fix will not restart a stopped media file or reconnect a missing audio device.
Check OBS audio devices and scene sources
Verify the selected device
OBS’s Quick Start Guide says desktop audio and microphone are captured by default. If the meter is inactive or the wrong sound is being captured, open Settings → Audio and manually select the intended devices. Recheck this after changing an audio device or operating system.

Avoid capturing the same device twice
An Audio Input Capture or Audio Output Capture source can capture a device for a particular scene. This is useful when different scenes need different devices. However, OBS warns that selecting the same device both as a global device in Settings → Audio and as a scene source can cause echo. Choose one capture path for that device.
Source availability depends on the operating system: OBS lists Audio Input/Output Capture for Windows and macOS; on Linux, use ALSA or PulseAudio sources. See the OBS Audio Sources guide for the platform-specific options.

Make sure radio files and playlists keep playing
Loop a single audio file
For a local file added as an OBS Media Source, open its properties and verify that Loop is enabled. OBS supports common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. Without Loop, playback ends when the file finishes.
Restart playback when source becomes active is a separate setting: it controls what happens when the source becomes active, not whether it repeats after reaching the end. Close file when inactive unloads a hidden or inactive media file, which may introduce a short delay when it becomes visible again. For a source that should remain ready, consider whether closing it while inactive suits the scene design.

Loop a playlist
For a playlist, OBS’s VLC Video source supports playlist looping; Loop Playlist is on by default in the documented settings. VLC must be installed for this source type. If OBS is 64-bit, the OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC. Consult the Media Sources guide if the source is unavailable or the playlist does not repeat.
Monitor the signal and test before leaving the stream unattended
- Check the source meter. Play the file or application and confirm the intended source is active in the mixer.
- Listen at more than one point. Check the audio at the device where possible, then listen to the signal reaching OBS using Audio Monitoring. A moving meter shows activity, but listening can reveal silence, distortion, or the wrong source.
- Record a normal session and review it. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide recommends recording with the usual configuration and listening back before going live.
- Run a short test stream or recording. The OBS Project Quick Start Guide says, “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues, rather than just jumping in to your first stream or recording.” Check both the audio and stream connection during the test.
Keep an eye on the mixer meters for activity and obvious clipping. The OBS documentation reviewed here does not establish a built-in continuous audio-loss alert or a validated 24-hour preflight duration, so a short successful test should not be treated as proof that an unattended broadcast will remain healthy all day.

Troubleshoot the network when OBS shows connection symptoms
If the audio meter is active but OBS reports dropped frames or intermittent disconnections, focus on the connection to the ingest server and whether the configured bitrate is sustainable.
- Prefer wired networking when Wi-Fi is unstable. OBS’s guide says, “It’s recommended to use a wired connection when streaming”. Ethernet can improve transport stability, but it cannot fix an audio interface, device-selection, or media-loop problem.
- Review bitrate against stable upload capacity. OBS suggests keeping bitrate below the connection’s capacity and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee. Leave headroom for network variation and other traffic.
- Try another ingest server if the selected server appears unreliable.
- Check software and network equipment. OBS suggests checking VPN, security or network-optimization software, drivers, the router, modem, cables, and other network hardware.
- Apply platform-specific advice only where it applies. The OBS connection guide labels some network options as Windows-only; do not assume they exist on macOS or Linux.
For details and the applicable settings, use OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide. Changing video bitrate is not a remedy for a silent source meter: diagnose capture and playback separately.
