For dependable captions, prepare and review a caption track for every recorded lesson; do not rely on YouTube’s live automatic captions to remain in the replay. If viewers also need captions during the continuous live broadcast, send a separate caption feed to YouTube—embedded 608/708 captions or supported software that sends captions over HTTP—and test that it stays synchronized when the playlist changes lessons.

Why captions can disappear from a live replay

YouTube’s live automatic captions are not a durable caption track for the archive. YouTube says that after a live stream ends, its live automatic captions do not remain on the video. The platform processes captions for the resulting video separately, and those post-stream captions may differ from the live captions. Live automatic captions are currently English-only and depend on channel eligibility and stream configuration. YouTube Help: Use automatic captioning

That distinction matters for a 24/7 stream: captions visible during a broadcast do not guarantee that the replay will have the same captions, or that each lesson will have its own selectable caption track. Treat the live caption feed and the captions attached to lesson videos as two separate jobs.

Caption each recorded lesson first

For durable, viewer-selectable captions on the lesson videos, add a caption track to each uploaded video in YouTube Studio. You can upload a timed caption file, use auto-sync with a transcript, or enter captions manually. Follow the current Studio caption workflow and check that the track’s language is correct.

  1. Prepare the lesson captions. Use a properly timed caption file where possible. If you use a transcript with auto-sync or YouTube-generated captions, review the result against the actual lesson audio.
  2. Check accuracy and timing. Correct names, technical terms, punctuation, and timing. YouTube warns that automatic speech recognition can misrepresent speech because of accents, dialects, mispronunciation, or background noise. YouTube Help: Add subtitles and captions
  3. Confirm the viewer-facing track. Open the lesson as a viewer and verify that captions are available in the intended language and remain in sync from beginning to end. Viewers must turn captions on and can adjust their display settings; a track must exist and be available before they can select it.
  4. Repeat for every lesson. A caption track on one source video does not establish a caption track for every other lesson in a rotating stream.

If captions must appear in the live output

To caption the live broadcast itself, send captions to YouTube. Its documented delivery choices are embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions in the outgoing video or supported caption software that sends captions over HTTP. These are live-output methods; they do not replace adding reviewed caption tracks to the individual lesson videos. YouTube Help: Live caption requirements

Method What it involves Important limitation
Embedded 608/708 captions Configure the encoder to carry captions in the outgoing video stream. The standard supports up to four language tracks, but YouTube currently supports one caption track for this method.
Caption software over HTTP Use supported caption software or a service to send captions to YouTube’s caption ingestion endpoint. YouTube says each stream entry point can have one caption feed. Check a provider’s current compatibility and terms before relying on it.

The cited YouTube guidance describes delivery mechanisms, not a turnkey system for synchronizing captions through a rotating lesson playlist. Whichever method you choose, the feed must match the audio and timing of the lesson currently playing. Confirm how your encoder, playlist system, or caption provider handles lesson changes rather than assuming synchronization will carry across transitions.

Test the transition, not just one lesson

  1. Verify that captions appear on the live output in the intended language.
  2. Watch a complete transition from one lesson to the next, including any gap, slate, or overlap in the audio.
  3. Check that the captions switch at the right point and do not continue from the previous lesson.
  4. Repeat checks after changes to the playlist, encoder, or caption-feed configuration.

This is a practical production check, not a guarantee from YouTube that a particular combination of tools will stay synchronized.

Plan for a stream that runs longer than 12 hours

A 24/7 broadcast exceeds YouTube’s documented 12-hour thresholds. DVR may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours, and YouTube says a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if retaining the full broadcast matters. YouTube Help: DVR on live streams · YouTube Help: Archive live streams

If you need YouTube archives or DVR to serve a particular purpose, consider whether shorter scheduled sessions fit that need better than one uninterrupted stream. That is an operational option inferred from YouTube’s stated limits, not a YouTube recommendation to divide a continuous stream.

Common caption problems and what to check

  • Captions were visible live but are missing from the replay: live automatic captions do not remain on the ended stream. Check whether YouTube has generated VOD captions separately and whether each lesson has its own uploaded caption track.
  • Captions are wrong or late: review the lesson’s caption track against the recording, especially names, accents, technical vocabulary, and noisy sections. For the live feed, verify its timing against the audio at the current point in the playlist.
  • Captions stop matching after a lesson changes: inspect how the caption feed and playlist handle the transition. YouTube documents feed delivery, but does not prescribe a method that automatically synchronizes a rotating prerecorded playlist.
  • The live caption option is unavailable: check channel eligibility and streaming configuration; live automatic captions are not available to every channel or setup and are currently English-only. For supplied live captions, confirm that the encoder or supported software is actually sending captions to YouTube.
  • The replay or DVR is incomplete: check stream duration. A broadcast longer than 12 hours may have limited or unavailable DVR, and one exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all; keep a local recording when the full archive is important.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without leaving a computer running at home. Upload the recordings or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos in the cloud; it does not caption the lessons or create a live caption feed, so prepare each lesson’s caption track and arrange a separate live-caption workflow if the broadcast itself needs captions.
