Handle each disc by its edge and center hole, return it to its own case, and store the case upright in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and rapid temperature changes. Clean only when needed, using gentle center-to-edge strokes—not circular wiping. These habits reduce avoidable damage, but they cannot guarantee how long a particular movie disc will remain playable.
Handle discs without touching or flexing the playing surface
1. Pick up a disc by its edge and center hole
Hold the disc at its outer edge, using the center hole for support if needed. This keeps fingerprints and skin oils off the reading surface. The National Archives includes Blu-ray and DVD handling guidance in its Machine-Readable Media recommendations.
2. Keep fingers off the reading side
When taking a disc from its case or putting it back, avoid touching either playing surface. Handle it by the edge rather than sliding a finger across the underside to lift it.
3. Avoid bending the disc
Do not flex a disc to release it from a case. Press the case’s center hub as designed, then lift the disc by the edge. Bending can stress the disc, and forcing it out can cause scratches or other damage.

Use a case and store it in a stable place
4. Return each disc to its own case after use
A case protects a disc from dust, accidental contact, and scratches when it is not playing. Avoid leaving discs loose on a table, in a player, or stacked on top of one another.
5. Store cases upright
Keep discs in their individual cases and store the cases vertically, as you would books. Stacking loose discs exposes their surfaces to contact and debris; cases also make it easier to find and return each disc to its proper place.

6. Choose a protective case
The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends standard jewel cases for CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays, and says polypropylene cases offer greater durability. It cautions that paper or plastic sleeves provide little physical protection and can scratch or contaminate discs. See its optical-media storage guidance.
7. Keep the collection cool, dry, and away from sunlight
Choose a place away from heaters, windows with direct sun, damp areas, and abrupt environmental changes. The Canadian Conservation Institute gives storage guidance of 20–50% relative humidity and temperatures from -10°C to 23°C, and warns against large, rapid fluctuations. These are institutional conservation conditions, not a requirement that every household install climate-control equipment.

8. Keep food, drinks, dust, and debris away
Keep discs and playback equipment away from meals, spills, and dusty work areas. Debris can get onto the disc or into the player, creating avoidable cleaning needs and potential playback problems.
Clean a Blu-ray or DVD only when it needs it
9. Remove loose dust gently
Do not clean discs routinely if they look clean. For loose dust, a hand-operated air puffer is a gentle option recommended by the National Archives. Avoid rubbing dust into the surface with a cloth.

10. Wipe visible marks from the center outward
For fingerprints or other deposits, use a soft, lint-free cloth and wipe in straight strokes from the center hole toward the outer edge. Do not wipe in circles: circumferential scratches can be more damaging than scratches running outward from the center, according to the National Archives.
Sony’s disc-cleaning guidance, modified January 30, 2024, calls for a soft, dry cloth and warns against benzine, thinner, commercial disc or lens cleaners, and vinyl anti-static spray. Sony also warns that liquid cleaners can damage disc contents. The National Archives says distilled or deionized water may be used if needed, followed by complete drying; because manufacturer advice differs, check the disc or player maker’s instructions before using any liquid.

Avoid toothpaste, polishing compounds, abrasive pads, and circular buffing. The National Archives says small, occasional scratches are unlikely to affect readability, but its maintenance procedure cannot fix deep scratches that impair playback.

11. Avoid adhesive labels and solvents
Write on the case or its insert instead of applying an adhesive label to the disc. Avoid solvent-based cleaners and markers. If marking a disc is unavoidable, the National Archives limits its advice to a water-based felt-tip marker on the clear inner hub.
How long do Blu-rays and DVDs last?
There is no dependable universal lifespan figure for an individual pressed Blu-ray or DVD movie in the cited official guidance. Longevity depends on factors including the disc’s materials and manufacturing quality, plus its age, handling, and storage. The Library of Congress notes that the exact material composition is proprietary and may differ by brand; under good storage conditions, the physical disc may outlast the playback equipment and software. That is a possibility, not a guarantee that every disc will remain readable.

Protect unique recorded data with a verified backup
If a disc contains unique recorded files, keep another copy rather than relying on careful storage alone. Check that the backup opens and that the files can be read. The Library of Congress recommends making backups of recorded data and checking playback or readability; its Audio/Visual Materials FAQ discusses the limits of predicting physical-media life.
