If a toddler’s off-the-shoulder romper keeps slipping, first check that it fits now and that its elastic, seams, and fastenings are intact. Don’t add a neck tie, loose pin, or detachable clip as a quick fix. If the garment won’t stay secure during ordinary movement, stop using it and choose a well-fitting design with securely attached, continuous shoulder straps.
Start by checking the fit and condition
- Check the size and how it sits. Use a garment that fits your child now, rather than sizing up. Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office warns that oversized clothing can contribute to trips and falls. If the romper slides down during ordinary movement, don’t rely on repeated pulling it back into place.
- Inspect the construction. Look at the neckline elastic, seams, strap attachments, snaps, and decorative parts. Set the garment aside if elastic is stretched, stitching is unraveling, a part is coming loose, or an edge feels sharp. Health Canada’s January 2026 guidance says clothing for young children should use stitching that will not unravel, and that garments intended for children under three should not have small parts that detach under reasonably foreseeable use.
Singapore’s guidance for children below seven also says shoulder straps should be continuous, securely fastened, and have no loose or free ends. A romper designed to sit off the shoulder may not meet that practical test if its straps or upper edge won’t stay securely in position.
Why improvised fixes can add risk
Avoid ties or cords near the neck
Don’t tie the romper to the child or add a cord around the neck or upper chest to hold it up. Singapore’s child-apparel guidance advises against cords or drawstrings around the hood and neck for children below seven. Loose strap ends are also discouraged.

Don’t rely on clips, pins, or fashion tape
The sources reviewed do not establish that fashion tape, removable garment clips, or safety pins are safe or effective for keeping a toddler’s romper in place. A pin can expose a sharp point, while a detachable clip or other small part can come loose. Health Canada’s warnings concern sharp edges and detachable parts on young children’s clothing. The NHS warning about tying or clipping a dummy to a baby’s clothes is specifically about dummy clips; it is a caution about loose ties, not proof that every garment clip poses the same risk.

Choose between a permanent alteration and another design
There is no tested repair method for every romper: safety depends on its fabric, construction, condition, and how the child moves in it. If you consider an alteration, have a garment maker or tailor assess the actual item. Any finished work should remain securely attached after wear and washing, with no loose small parts, unraveling stitching, cords, or sharp edges. Those criteria apply general safety guidance; they are not a tested alteration recipe.
If the romper still shifts, putting it aside and choosing a different design is the more straightforward option. Look for a close-fitting garment with continuous, securely attached shoulder straps and no loose ends. Intertek’s interpretation of European guidance says children’s braces should be close fitting and that wearing them off the shoulder and advertising them that way is not acceptable under the guidance it describes. That is a European standards interpretation, not a universal legal conclusion for every romper. For legal compliance, check the requirements where you live.
