To keep an OBS stream running through a power cut, back up power for the streaming PC and the modem, ONT, or router it depends on. Choose a UPS or inverter based on your equipment’s measured watt draw and the manufacturer’s runtime at that load—not the VA figure alone. Even then, power backup cannot keep a stream online if your broadband provider’s network or upstream equipment goes down.
What needs backup power?
Make a list of everything that must remain on for your stream to continue: the Windows PC, any monitor you need to operate it, the modem or fiber ONT, router, and any mains-powered audio or capture equipment. A PC that stays on cannot send a stream if its internet equipment loses power.
Measure the equipment’s real draw while it is doing the work you expect during a stream, using an appropriate power meter or reliable device telemetry. A PC’s power-supply rating is its capacity, not a measurement of its usual draw. Add the loads of the devices you intend to back up; that combined load affects how long the battery lasts.
Choose a UPS by watts and runtime
VA and watts are different ratings. Check that the UPS’s output watt capacity exceeds the measured load, then consult its manufacturer runtime chart or table for that load. Schneider Electric India recommends output watt capacity 20–25% above the load and notes that connected equipment affects runtime. That is a sizing recommendation, not a promise of any particular runtime.

- Compare the combined measured load with the UPS’s watt output rating.
- Check the manufacturer’s runtime information at or above that load; do not assume runtime from the VA number.
- Confirm which sockets provide battery backup. Some outlets may provide surge protection without battery power.
- Include the modem, ONT, or router in the load if it must stay online.
- Check battery condition and allow a margin rather than sizing to the limit.
For example, Eaton India lists its Aurora line-interactive UPS family as 600–1000 VA, 230 Vac, for applications including desktops and routers. Those family specifications do not establish that a particular model will run your PC and network equipment for a particular time. Check the exact model’s watt rating, backed-up outlets, and runtime at your measured load before choosing it.
Decide whether you need ride-through or longer backup
A desktop UPS may suit a brief interruption, a short bridge while power returns, or a controlled shutdown. If you need to continue streaming through a longer outage, evaluate a properly sized inverter or extended-runtime UPS with qualified local advice. Verify supported load, output characteristics, switchover behavior, battery arrangement, and tested runtime for your equipment. Confirm compatibility with the PC’s power supply and any existing inverter/UPS setup with the equipment manufacturers or a qualified installer.

There is no single UPS or inverter capacity that can be recommended for every streaming PC, and the available guidance does not establish a typical duration for Indian power cuts. Choose against your actual load and the outage duration you need to plan for, rather than assuming a product will cover an unspecified event.
Keep the internet path working
Battery backup at your home only covers equipment you connect to it. Your broadband provider’s local equipment, fiber infrastructure, and upstream service may still be affected by a power cut. Test whether your connection remains usable during an outage; keeping your own router powered cannot guarantee provider-side availability.

YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth above the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom. Test upload performance rather than relying on download speed, and select stable encoder settings for the connection. A lower bitrate can be a sensible quality trade-off on a constrained but working connection; it cannot fix a broken internet path.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance, dated 2024-09-30, identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as signs of a network problem between the PC and the ingest server. OBS recommends wired networking over Wi-Fi, checking network configuration and software interference, and contacting your ISP if the problem is outside your equipment. Its dynamic bitrate option can reduce quality when the connection struggles, but OBS cautions that this does not resolve the underlying cause.

Prepare OBS and YouTube Live before the event
YouTube recommends setting up an encoder in advance and starting it before the scheduled event. Use the Live Control Room preview to check the incoming stream before going live. YouTube’s computer live-streaming guidance also recommends testing backup-encoder failover if you use one, confirming that local archive files are intact and growing, and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Rehearse with the usual camera, audio, OBS scenes, encoder settings, upload connection, and power arrangement.
- Start the encoder ahead of the event and check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room.
- If you have a backup encoder, test the failover before relying on it.
- Check that the local recording is intact and still growing, and that viewers can access the event.
- During the stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages along with your UPS’s alarm or runtime display.
A rehearsal can reveal problems but cannot guarantee that an outage will not interrupt the stream. Do not assume OBS will automatically recover every camera, capture source, or internet disruption.

Troubleshoot a stream interrupted by a power cut
- The PC shut off: Recheck its measured load, the UPS watt limit, battery condition, runtime at that load, and whether the PC was plugged into a battery-backed outlet. VA alone does not establish that the UPS is adequate.
- The PC stayed on, but OBS reports dropped frames or a disconnection: Check that the modem, ONT, and router stayed powered; inspect wired connectivity, upload stability, network configuration, VPN or security software, and ISP conditions. The fault may be between your PC and YouTube rather than in OBS.
- OBS appears to be sending, but viewers report problems: Check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide distinguishes encoder or source issues from outbound internet problems and recommends checking encoder operation, CPU load, upload strength, and ISP support as appropriate.
- The encoder will not start: For certain third-party encoder start errors, YouTube’s troubleshooting guide includes refreshing the stream key in Live Control Room. This is a startup troubleshooting step, not a routine fix for a power interruption.
