To keep an OBS loop live with a Windows laptop lid closed, set Windows to stay awake when plugged in, configure and test the looping video source in OBS, then confirm the feed in YouTube Live Control Room before leaving it unattended. Closing the lid can put a laptop to sleep, and the exact lid options and closed-lid behavior can vary by hardware and manufacturer. There is no universal thermal-safety guarantee for running every laptop closed.
1. Set Windows to stay awake when you close the lid
- Plug in the laptop. The setting you need is the plugged-in lid action; the battery action can remain different.
- Open Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does.
- For When I close the lid, set the Plugged in option so the computer does not sleep. Available choices vary by PC hardware and manufacturer, as Microsoft notes in its Windows power guidance.
- Save the change. Turning off the display is not the same as putting Windows to sleep: the aim is to keep the computer awake while the display is off or the lid is closed.
Microsoft says most laptops can go to sleep automatically when the lid is closed. If the setting is missing or does not behave as expected, consult the laptop maker’s power-management utility or support information; do not assume the Windows setting overrides every manufacturer-specific behavior.
2. Make OBS repeat the video
- Open the OBS scene you plan to stream and add or select the video media source you want to loop.
- In that source’s current properties, enable its loop behavior. OBS’s interface can change between versions, so use the installed version’s source controls rather than relying on an assumed menu label or click sequence.
- Play the source through to the end and watch it restart. Check that the restart is clean and that the intended picture and audio continue; do not leave the laptop unattended until you have seen a complete repeat.
OBS’s laptop troubleshooting guidance, dated June 12, 2021, recommends leaving OBS on the default high-power GPU. If you use display capture and it appears blank, check whether OBS and the display are using different GPUs. OBS 27 and later includes a capture method for that situation; the cited guidance specifies Windows 10 version 1903 or later for the described setup.

- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select or create the stream you intend to use.
- Copy its stream key and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. YouTube uses the key to identify and accept the encoder feed. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream.
- Use YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion option where supported. RTMPS encrypts the connection between encoder and YouTube.
- Start the encoder and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm it shows the intended OBS scene and loop before starting or leaving the live stream running.
YouTube supports custom stream keys and encoder-triggered auto-start and auto-stop settings. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and stream key guidance for the controls available to your account and stream.

4. Choose settings that fit your connection
Use the resolution and frame rate your video needs, then choose a bitrate that the actual upload connection can sustain. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends 5–14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30; that is a recommended range, not a promise that every connection can support its upper end. Run an upload-speed test from the laptop’s actual streaming location and leave headroom rather than setting OBS at the full measured upload rate.
- Match the OBS output resolution and frame rate to the stream you intend to send.
- Choose a bitrate within YouTube’s recommendation only if the measured connection can sustain it consistently.
- Use YouTube’s current encoder settings as they may change; codec and resolution affect the appropriate bitrate.
- Test before the real broadcast, as YouTube advises, and watch stream health for warnings or instability.
There is no distinct India-only procedure in the cited Windows, OBS, or YouTube guidance. Test on the Indian connection and at the location where the laptop will actually run; do not assume a particular upload speed or uninterrupted power or internet access.

5. Preflight the closed-lid setup
- With the laptop plugged in and open, start OBS and confirm the video loops correctly.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Check the picture and audio, then open the channel’s watch page and confirm the stream there as well.
- Check the live page from a mobile device or another screen, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- While watching from another device, close the lid for a short test. Confirm the stream still receives the intended loop and that the computer remains awake.
- Only leave the setup unattended after those checks. YouTube recommends testing before streaming, monitoring audio and video quality, and verifying the event on the watch page and a mobile device; see its live streaming guidance.
Neither those sources nor the Windows setting certify the thermal behavior of a particular laptop with its lid closed. The laptop model, cooling design, firmware, and any manufacturer power utility matter. If the laptop becomes unusually hot or behaves unreliably in the closed-lid test, stop and follow the manufacturer’s guidance rather than assuming a universal safe operating rule.

Common problems and fixes
- The stream ends when the lid closes: Recheck the plugged-in lid action in Control Panel, verify the laptop is actually connected to power, and run the closed-lid test again. A manufacturer utility may affect the setting.
- The video plays once and stops: Reopen the OBS media source’s current properties, enable looping, and verify a complete repeat before streaming.
- OBS display capture is blank: If the scene uses display capture, check GPU assignment and capture method. OBS recommends the default high-power GPU; its documented alternative capture guidance applies to OBS 27 and later and Windows 10 version 1903 or later.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Confirm the correct stream key and server/RTMPS settings in OBS, then check that the encoder is running and the selected YouTube stream is the intended one. Keep the key private.
- The stream health is poor or intermittent: Run an upload test at the streaming location, lower the bitrate or output demands to fit the connection, and test again while monitoring YouTube’s health indicators.
- The laptop’s closed-lid operation seems unsafe or unstable: Do not rely on a generic setting as a thermal guarantee. Reopen the lid, stop the test if needed, and check the manufacturer’s instructions for that model.
Copyright, reused content, and stream responsibility
Keeping a loop technically live does not establish that you have the rights to stream its video or audio, or that a repeated video meets YouTube’s monetization rules. Use material you own or are licensed to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and reused-content policies for your channel and content. Do not assume that looping a recording makes it original or clears third-party rights.
