To keep an OBS sleep-sounds stream online through a power cut, battery-back up every essential part of the setup: the streaming PC and the router and ONT/modem it uses. Size the backup from the equipment’s measured watt draw and the runtime you need—not from a UPS’s VA number alone. In OBS, enable automatic reconnect for network interruptions, but remember it cannot power a computer back on after a complete shutdown. Test the whole setup before relying on it.
Identify what can fail during a power cut
A stream can stop because the PC loses power, the local network equipment loses power, or the internet connection or streaming service becomes unavailable. These are separate failure points. OBS can attempt to reconnect after certain stream-output interruptions, but it cannot keep unpowered equipment running. OBS also notes that dropped frames and disconnections can stem from network conditions outside the software. OBS connection troubleshooting · OBS advanced settings
- PC: If it shuts down, OBS stops. Network reconnect settings do not restart a powered-off computer.
- Router and ONT/modem: If either loses power, the PC may stay on but lose its route to the streaming service. Include both devices in the backup plan.
- ISP or service interruption: A local UPS cannot fix an outage beyond your apartment. Do not assume your provider’s wider network will remain available during a local power cut.
Decide what the backup must keep running
Write down every device needed to sustain or manage the stream: the PC, router, and ONT/modem. Include a monitor only if you need it during the outage to check or control the stream. Measure or obtain the actual power draw in watts for the equipment as used, then decide whether you want to bridge brief cuts, continue for a longer outage, or shut down safely.
A router-only backup may keep Wi-Fi or internet equipment powered, but it will not keep an OBS stream running if the PC turns off. Conversely, backing up only the PC is not enough if the router or ONT/modem goes dark.

Choose backup equipment by watts and runtime
Watts and volt-amperes (VA) describe different limits. Check both the backup unit’s VA rating and its maximum output in watts, and confirm that the combined connected load is within the manufacturer’s guidance. Runtime depends on the load and battery, so use the manufacturer’s runtime chart for your measured setup rather than relying on a generic estimate. APC: Understanding the difference between watts and VA
| Option | Best suited to | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Computer UPS with battery backup | Bridging an interruption or giving a PC and network equipment time to shut down or ride through a short cut, depending on capacity and load. | Output watts and VA, manufacturer runtime at your measured load, battery condition, transfer behavior, and output characteristics. Follow compatibility guidance for the PC and connected equipment. |
| Home inverter and battery | Considering longer-duration household backup rather than only emergency computer backup. | Whether it supports the complete setup, its output and runtime at that load, installation requirements, and building-specific permissions, ventilation, and service arrangements. |
| Portable power station | Considering a self-contained alternative for the complete setup. | Usable output, runtime at the measured load, transfer behavior, output characteristics, and compatibility guidance from the equipment manufacturers. |
Schneider Electric India describes UPS devices as emergency backup and protection, while home inverters are oriented toward longer-duration household backup. The right choice depends on your intended runtime and the total connected load; apartment installation requirements vary, so verify them for your building. Enable OBS automatic reconnect for connection drops
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find Automatically Reconnect and enable it. Confirm the installed version’s available retry settings; labels and defaults can vary.
- Save the change, then test a network interruption with your streaming platform. OBS’s output reference describes configurable retry behavior, including retry intervals that double on successive attempts. OBS advanced settings · OBS output reference
For connection problems, OBS recommends checking factors such as the server, bitrate, and network configuration. Where practical, use a wired connection between the PC and router; it may avoid some Wi-Fi instability, but it cannot solve a power failure or an ISP outage. OBS connection troubleshooting

Test the complete recovery sequence
Do a controlled test before depending on the stream overnight. A successful reconnect test alone does not show that the PC, OBS, the sleep-sounds source, and the streaming platform will all recover unattended after a total power loss.

- Save your OBS profile and scene collection. Confirm that the sleep-sounds source is available after a normal PC restart.
- Connect the PC and required network equipment to the intended backup arrangement. Test it under the full connected load and compare the observed behavior with the backup manufacturer’s guidance.
- Test a network interruption while the PC remains on and confirm whether OBS reconnects to your platform.
- Separately test the recovery sequence after a controlled power loss, using equipment and procedures you can safely operate. Confirm that the PC starts, OBS opens with the right scene and source, and the platform shows the stream again.
- If any step needs manual intervention, plan for that rather than treating recovery as automatic. Results depend on device firmware, operating-system startup settings, OBS configuration, credentials, and platform behavior.
Troubleshoot a stream that still stops
| Symptom | Likely issue | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS stops when the apartment loses power | The PC was not backed up, the backup was overloaded, or runtime ended. | Check the PC’s power path, connected watt load, UPS output limits, and runtime guidance. Include all required equipment in the load calculation. |
| PC stays on, but OBS disconnects | The router or ONT/modem lost power, or there is an ISP, network, server, or bitrate problem. | Back up the network equipment too. Check OBS’s connection guidance, network configuration, server selection, and bitrate; test wired connectivity where possible. |
| OBS reconnects during a brief network drop but not after a shutdown | Automatic reconnect applies to output interruptions while OBS is running; it does not itself boot the PC or launch OBS. | Test startup and stream recovery separately. Check operating-system and device startup behavior and confirm the stream in the platform. |
| Backup runtime is shorter than expected | The connected load, battery condition, or equipment behavior differs from the assumptions behind a generic estimate. | Use the backup maker’s runtime chart for the measured load and check battery condition and output limits. Do not infer runtime from VA alone. |
