To keep an OBS playlist live on YouTube over Airtel broadband, set OBS to a bitrate your connection can sustain continuously—not merely the speed advertised on your plan—then test the actual playlist and monitor OBS and YouTube for connection problems. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate. If the connection cannot provide that margin reliably, lower the stream’s resolution, frame rate, or bitrate.
Choose OBS settings your upload connection can sustain
Start with the resolution and frame rate your playlist needs. YouTube’s current H.264 live-encoding guidance lists these recommended video bitrates:

These are YouTube’s recommendations for live encoder video settings, not measurements of your Airtel connection or guarantees that it can hold a chosen bitrate. Audio also uses bandwidth, so the full stream bitrate is higher than the video bitrate alone. YouTube recommends 20% headroom beyond the stream’s total bitrate; do not set OBS right at the upload limit you observe.
For a straightforward OBS setup, use a YouTube-supported live protocol and codec, set the rate control to CBR, and use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Its live guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, with up to 60 fps. Do not substitute YouTube’s separate prerecorded-video upload settings; those address file uploads, not OBS livestream encoding.

Set a practical target, not just a resolution
Run an upload speed test from the streaming computer’s network, ideally at times when other people normally use the connection. Treat the result as a snapshot: household uploads, Wi-Fi conditions, and ISP congestion can affect available capacity. For example, a video bitrate of 6 Mbps plus audio requires more than 6 Mbps of stable outbound capacity; YouTube’s 20% headroom recommendation means you need additional margin beyond the stream’s total bitrate. This is an arithmetic example, not an Airtel speed measurement.
- Use upload speed, not download speed, to assess the outbound stream path.
- Include other simultaneous uploads when judging whether OBS has enough bandwidth.
- If upload capacity fluctuates, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the stream has margin during the weaker periods you observe.
Test the playlist before relying on it
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a private or unlisted test stream, then connect OBS using the stream key for that event. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- In OBS, select the scene that contains the playlist and start the test stream. Let it run through representative playlist transitions and audio, rather than checking only a static opening image.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, watch the stream health messages. In OBS, watch the dropped-frame count. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to what the real stream will contain. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and Live Control Room help.
- Only start the public broadcast after the test shows the playlist, audio, and incoming stream behaving as expected.
A successful short test does not prove the ISP will remain stable indefinitely. Test under representative network conditions; there is no universally sufficient test duration established by the cited platform guidance.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and buffering
OBS dropped frames are rising
OBS Project explains: “Dropped frames means that your connection to remote server isn’t stable or you can’t keep up with your set bitrate.” This usually points to the connection between your encoder and the ingest server, or a bitrate that is too high for the available upload—not necessarily a problem with the playlist itself. Follow OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.
- Lower the OBS bitrate and test again. If that resolves dropped frames, the original setting may have exceeded stable upload capacity.
- Where your setup permits, connect the computer to the router by Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi. A Cat 6 cable can improve the local computer-to-router link when Wi-Fi is the weak point; it cannot add Airtel upstream capacity or fix ISP congestion or a route problem.
- Try another YouTube ingest server if the encoder configuration offers that option.
- OBS documents Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing options. Change such settings only when appropriate for your system and follow OBS’s instructions.
- OBS’s dynamic bitrate option can lower bitrate during congestion and may help preserve continuity, but it reduces video quality and does not repair the underlying connection. If consistent image quality matters more, test a lower fixed bitrate that fits the weakest upload periods you observe.
Viewers report buffering, but OBS shows no dropped frames
Broadcaster-side dropped frames and viewer playback buffering are different problems. A viewer’s device and internet connection can buffer even when OBS is sending a healthy stream to YouTube. If OBS and YouTube show a healthy incoming stream, check the affected viewers’ playback conditions before lowering your broadcast bitrate without evidence that the outgoing connection is failing.

The stream looks healthy, but Airtel performance varies
Airtel’s public plan page lists location-dependent speed tiers, while its terms describe listed speeds as maximum prescribed speeds that can vary because of congestion, technical reasons, or other conditions. An advertised plan speed alone therefore does not establish a particular upload rate or a stable route to YouTube. Check the actual connection and contact Airtel about a persistent line-specific issue if repeated tests show a problem. See Airtel’s broadband plans and Airtel Xstream Fiber terms and conditions.
Airtel’s terms page lists a 3,333 GB fair-usage threshold per billing cycle, after which speed reduction applies; Airtel says the policy may be amended. Check the terms applicable to your plan and locality. A continuous stream contributes data according to its bitrate and running time, while other household traffic may also count toward the same allowance.

Choose settings around the stream’s real priorities
- Resolution and frame rate: Use 1080p or 60 fps only if the playlist benefits from the added detail or motion and your upload can sustain the corresponding bitrate with margin. A lower output can be a better fit for a variable connection.
- Fixed versus dynamic bitrate: CBR keeps the selected rate consistent when the connection is stable. Dynamic bitrate may preserve continuity during congestion by reducing quality temporarily.
- Wi-Fi versus Ethernet: Ethernet can remove local wireless instability if Wi-Fi is the cause, but it does not resolve upstream ISP or YouTube-route issues.
- Latency: YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Prioritize low latency when live interaction needs it; for a playlist with little interaction, continuity may matter more.
- Plan tier versus measured upload: Compare address-specific availability and actual upload behavior, not only a plan’s advertised maximum or download speed. There is no single Airtel tier or OBS resolution that is best for every location and connection.
