To keep a scheduled Indian radio show live on YouTube, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder with that event’s stream URL and key, verify the preview, and start the encoder before airtime. Build in setup time, monitor stream health, and rehearse a backup if you have one. Separately, confirm that your station’s music and archive rights cover online YouTube distribution; terrestrial broadcast permissions may not be enough.
1. Schedule the show in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Choose Manage, then schedule a stream. Create a new event or reuse a previous setup.
- Review the title, description, visibility, schedule, audience settings, and other event details before saving.
- If you reuse settings, confirm the copied stream key and metadata are for the intended show. Reusing settings copies them; it does not prove that the encoder is sending a feed to the right event.
A scheduled event creates an upcoming watch page, but the page alone is not a live program feed. Treat the event and the encoder connection as separate parts of the setup. YouTube says a stream key functions like a password: keep it private and reset it if it is exposed. YouTube’s scheduled live stream guidance explains event setup and reused settings.
2. Connect the encoder and take the event live
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room and locate its stream settings.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Use the credentials for this event, not a key left over from another show unless you have confirmed it is the correct one.
- Configure the encoder for the station’s actual video and audio output and available upload connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted form of RTMP; use it if your encoder supports it.
- Start the encoder’s outgoing feed. Wait for the incoming video and audio preview in Live Control Room, then check that it is the intended program and that sound is present.
- When you are ready for viewers, click Go live in Live Control Room unless you have deliberately enabled and tested auto-start.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Check the event’s archive and visibility settings if you do not want a show to remain available afterward; do not assume that a scheduled page means the feed or archive behaves as intended. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

3. Use a pre-show routine with enough lead time
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours in advance and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Those are preparation recommendations, not an uptime guarantee. A practical routine is:

- Before the day of the show: verify the scheduled event, encoder profile, event URL and key, audio routing, and any backup path. Test with audio and movement similar to the actual program.
- At least two hours before: set up the encoder and confirm the correct event credentials and connection.
- At least 15 minutes before: start the encoder, wait for the preview, and check picture, audio, and stream-health messages.
- Before airtime: verify the event can be reached from the channel and watch pages, then take it live at the intended time.
- During the show: keep monitoring audio, video, and stream health rather than assuming a successful preview guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast.
Choose resolution and bitrate based on the station’s production format and a tested, reliable upload connection. YouTube recommends a speed test and testing with content resembling the planned show. There is no responsible universal bitrate for a station whose connection, encoder, and output format are unknown. Follow YouTube’s live streaming tips for current encoder and stream-health guidance.
4. Choose manual controls or auto-start carefully
YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options can start or stop the stream when enabled. They reduce the need for an operator to press the controls at the event, but they also make correct configuration essential. Confirm the settings on the scheduled stream and rehearse the behavior before relying on them. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe previewing and clicking Go live, so do not assume that scheduling alone will publish the encoder feed.

5. Rehearse a real backup, not just a backup plan
A single encoder is simpler to operate. A primary and backup encoder add setup and coordination, but can provide another feed path if the primary fails. Neither arrangement guarantees continuity by itself.

- Configure the backup for the same scheduled event and verify its connection details and program source.
- In a controlled rehearsal, stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, as YouTube suggests for a failover test.
- Watch the viewer-facing player and confirm that it actually switches to the backup stream and that audio and video remain usable.
- Restore the primary and record what the operator must do if the same fault occurs during a show.
Also check local archive files if you rely on them, and monitor stream quality continuously. A backup that has not been exercised is an unverified assumption. YouTube’s live streaming tips cover stream monitoring and failover testing.

6. Check music and distribution rights for YouTube
Do not assume a station’s terrestrial radio permissions automatically cover a YouTube livestream or its replay. YouTube’s live-stream terms say the content provider represents that it has the necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music licensing rights, and must meet applicable regulatory requirements in the territory where the stream is available. Read the current YouTube livestream terms.
- IPRS: IPRS describes permissions for works in its controlled repertoire and identifies distinct categories that include internet non-interactive, internet interactive, radio broadcast, and community radio broadcast. Its permission does not settle rights outside the repertoire it controls. Check the relevant IPRS information and confirm which works and uses are covered.
- PPL India: PPL describes its radio broadcast licence as covering its sound-recording repertoire on terrestrial FM and community radio stations, and directs radio applicants to contact it. That description alone does not establish that a terrestrial licence authorizes YouTube streaming. Consult PPL India about the station’s specific use.
- Simulcast or internet streaming: An IPRS tariff document for non-interactive internet music streaming describes retransmission or simulcast of an FM station through a non-interactive internet service. The document says its tariff comes into force on 1 April 2025 and specifies a minimum annual royalty/licence fee and a revenue/per-stream calculation. These are terms in that tariff document, not a quote or determination for your station. Confirm the current tariff, applicability, scope, and any later changes with IPRS and relevant rights holders before relying on it.
For the station’s actual catalogue and arrangement, check the rights in compositions and lyrics as well as sound recordings, the relevant territories, whether the stream is interactive or non-interactive, and whether YouTube’s archive is retained. Get confirmation from the relevant rights holders or advisers; a platform setup cannot resolve a licensing gap. The tariff document is available from IPRS’s non-interactive internet music streaming tariff.

7. Troubleshoot before and during airtime

| Scheduled watch page appears, but no preview arrives | The encoder may not be sending, or may be using another event’s URL or key. | Confirm the encoder is running and recheck the server URL and key against the scheduled event. |
