To keep a YouTube Live playlist playing through load shedding, you need backup power for every part of your playback setup—not just the Wi-Fi router—and the internet provider’s network must remain available. A router mini UPS can power compatible networking equipment, but it cannot guarantee that broadband stays online, or keep a TV, streaming device, or computer running. For a creator broadcasting in 4K at 60 fps, the issue is different: protect the encoder and network connection from power loss, then use YouTube’s recommended upload settings and monitor stream health.
First, distinguish watching a live playlist from broadcasting one
If you are watching an existing YouTube Live stream, load shedding can interrupt either the internet connection or the device showing the video. You need to consider power for the router and any separate fiber terminal, as well as for your TV, phone, streaming stick, set-top box, or computer.
If you are the creator sending a 4K 60fps stream to YouTube, you need power for the encoder and network equipment, plus a reliable upload connection. The bitrate figures in YouTube’s encoder guidance apply to the creator’s upload to YouTube; they are not the speed target for viewers watching the stream.
Keep playback working during a local power cut
Check every device that needs power
- Identify the broadband equipment. Check whether your connection uses only a router or also has a separate ONT (fiber terminal) or modem. If both devices need power, a backup for the router alone will not keep the whole connection equipment powered.
- Read each power adapter label. Note the voltage, current requirement, and connector size for the router and any ONT or modem. Match these to the mini UPS output. Check how many devices it can power at once; a claim that a unit supports one 12V router does not prove it will suit a different router or a separate ONT.
- Account for the viewing device. A router UPS does not establish that a TV, streaming stick, set-top box, phone, or computer can also run through an outage. Arrange suitable power for the playback device if you need to keep watching.
- Ask your ISP about local outage behavior. Confirm whether the provider’s equipment and upstream network remain active during power loss in your area. The router staying on does not prove that the ISP connection is still available.
- Test the complete setup. Before relying on it, simulate an outage and check that the router, any ONT or modem, the playback device, and the broadband connection all work together.
Choosing a router mini UPS
Search for a “Wi-Fi router mini UPS” or “router UPS,” then check the exact output voltage, current capacity, connector, and number of powered outputs against your equipment. Oakter describes mini UPS units for routers and AirFiber equipment, as well as CCTV and set-top boxes; it notes that stated AirFiber duration depends on the router model (Oakter Mini UPS). Ambrane describes its PowerVolt as a 12V router UPS for devices rated at 2A or less and advertises up to five hours of backup (Ambrane PowerVolt). Champion lists 12V output up to 2A and an average battery life of four hours for the UPS1224D (Champion UPS1224D).

Those runtimes are manufacturers’ claims, not guaranteed results for your setup. Actual runtime depends on the connected load and conditions; check the manufacturer’s terms and test the devices you intend to power. None of these product descriptions establishes that the unit can run a television or a complete playback setup.
A cellular connection may be an alternative if fixed broadband goes down, but coverage, congestion, data allowance, and the power needed for the phone or hotspot vary. Check what works at your location rather than assuming mobile data will be available during an outage.

Creator setup: YouTube’s 4K 60fps encoder settings
YouTube’s published guidance for 4K/2160p at 60 fps recommends these encoder bitrates. They are settings for sending the broadcast to YouTube, not recommended viewer download speeds (YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

Choose a quality your upload connection can sustain reliably; a momentary speed test is not proof that the connection will remain stable. YouTube recommends testing with representative movement and audio before the event, monitoring stream health during it, and reviewing any messages shown in the live control room. Its guidance also states that 4K streams do not offer the low-latency option and are set to normal latency.

Protocol and codec trade-offs
YouTube supports H.264 and HEVC for HLS ingestion and frame rates up to 60 fps. Its documentation says HEVC generally provides 25% to 50% more data compression than H.264 at similar quality; that is a codec comparison, not a guarantee of a more reliable connection. HLS is segment-based and usually has higher latency than RTMP or WebRTC (YouTube HLS ingestion guidance). YouTube’s protocol comparison likewise describes HLS and DASH as supporting advanced codecs and high-resolution streaming while noting their higher latency (YouTube Live ingestion protocol comparison).
Protocol or codec choice cannot supply missing power, repair a weak upload connection, keep an ISP network available, or prevent a YouTube-side interruption.

Troubleshooting interruptions
- The router stays on, but the internet is unavailable: Check whether a separate ONT or modem lost power, then contact your ISP to ask whether its local or upstream service is active. A powered router by itself cannot confirm broadband availability.
- The router UPS will not power the router: Recheck the adapter’s voltage, current requirement, and plug size against the UPS output. Do not assume that a unit described as router-compatible matches your model.
- The router works but the viewing screen goes dark: The playback device needs its own suitable power source. Verify its power needs separately; router backup does not power a TV or other screen.
- The battery runs out sooner than expected: Treat advertised backup time as conditional. Check the manufacturer’s stated conditions and test the actual combination of devices and load.
- A creator’s stream health deteriorates: Review YouTube’s health messages, test the upload connection, and choose settings the connection can sustain. Run a pre-event test with representative movement and audio; the recommended 4K60 bitrate is not a promise that a variable connection can maintain it.
