Keep your dated journal entry as the record—not the AI’s summary. Check claims about past events against what you actually wrote, correct errors where the product allows it, and turn off AI features if you do not want generated reflections. To discourage advice, ask for reflection or questions only, but treat that request as guidance rather than a guarantee.
How do I stop AI from making things up about my past?
You cannot assume an AI diary’s recollection is accurate. Google warns that Pixel Journal’s AI-generated insights and reflections may not always be accurate or relevant. Treat statements such as “you told me” and summaries of earlier entries as suggestions to verify, not as an authoritative record. Google Pixel Journal documentation
- Keep your own dated entry. Write down what happened in your words and preserve the original entry separately from any AI-generated reflection.
- Check retrospective claims. When the AI recalls an earlier event, compare its statement with the dated entry before accepting or repeating it as fact.
- Correct errors where possible. If the product supports direct correction or memory controls, use them to clarify what is wrong. For Gemini, Google documents controls to turn memory on or off, correct Gemini directly, and delete chats. Gemini memory controls
- Consider deleting the relevant conversation. Google says deleting a Gemini chat may not stop personalization immediately; deletion can take time to affect it.
These steps help you distinguish your account from an AI’s interpretation; they are practical safeguards, not a validated guarantee against false recollections. The Gemini controls apply to memory of past Gemini chats and do not establish that a memory setting prevents every incorrect statement.

State the response you want in plain language. For example: “Reflect what you hear and ask questions; do not give advice unless I ask.” Or: “Please reflect my words without interpreting them. Ask one open question, and do not suggest actions.”

A prompt makes your preference clear, but the available product documentation does not establish that prompts reliably prevent every system from giving advice. Check the app for a control over its AI features or response style. Google says Pixel Journal users can turn off AI features; existing entries remain, while new AI reflections, inspiration, and insights stop. Google Pixel Journal documentation
Policies can also describe a service’s boundaries, but read them as that service’s own account of its behavior, not as an independent guarantee. For example, Senda’s policy, last updated August 7, 2026, says generated replies can be wrong and documents limits on medical, legal, and financial advice, along with a crisis-language screening and handoff. Those statements describe Senda, not a universal standard for AI diaries. Senda AI policy

Can I turn off memory in my AI journal?
That depends on the product. Look for separate controls for remembering past conversations, using saved information to personalize replies, deleting chats, and disabling AI output. A memory toggle and an AI-off switch may control different things: turning off memory does not necessarily disable generated reflections, and disabling AI may not delete existing entries.
Google documents a memory on/off control, direct correction, and chat deletion for Gemini. Pixel Journal separately lets users turn off AI features while retaining existing entries. These examples are product-specific; check the current settings and help page for the app you use. Gemini memory controls · Google Pixel Journal documentation

How private are AI journal entries?
Privacy depends on the specific app and its settings. Before writing sensitive details, check what is processed by an AI model, what is stored or backed up, how long information is retained, how deletion works, and which permissions the app requests. Consider microphone, location, photo, and health-data access where relevant.
Google’s Pixel Journal documentation describes entries as private by default and covers AI processing, optional backups, and permissions. It also warns that Gboard speech input may be processed on Google’s servers depending on settings. Do not assume another journaling app has the same practices or protections; read its current policy and settings before using it for sensitive material. Google Pixel Journal documentation

What current AI-journaling evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Research describes different ways to design AI-assisted journaling, but it does not establish a general method that prevents invented memories or unwanted advice. A 2023 MindfulDiary paper reports a four-week field study involving 28 patients with major depressive disorder and five psychiatrists. Those details describe one study and a design approach, not proof that AI diaries generally prevent errors or improve outcomes. Kim et al., MindfulDiary (2023)

A 2024 MindScape paper describes a contextual journaling design using large language models, behavioral sensing, and personalized prompts. Its four areas of interest—social interaction, sleep, digital habits, and physical fitness—are categories used in that prototype, not a validated taxonomy or evidence that its approach prevents false memories or advice. The paper describes a preliminary user study and planned future work. Nepal et al., MindScape (2024)

The reviewed sources do not provide a rate for fabricated autobiographical memories or unsolicited advice in AI diaries. There is no basis here for estimating how often either problem occurs across products.
When should an AI diary not be your only support?
An AI diary is not a substitute for professional care or an emergency service. Google says Pixel Journal is not a therapist or mental-health professional and is not monitored in real time for crisis support. If you need urgent help, use an appropriate local emergency or crisis service rather than relying on a journal app. Google Pixel Journal documentation
