A changing public IP address does not, by itself, require a YouTube Live setting change. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and a stream key—not a fixed public IP. But if the address change happens during an ISP reconnection, the interruption can still break the encoder’s connection to YouTube. Check the internet connection and encoder first, then verify the stream key if the encoder reports a start error.
First, tell an IP change apart from a stream interruption
There are two connections to keep distinct: your encoder sends video to YouTube, while viewers watch the live page on YouTube. A new WAN (public internet) address may occur alongside a router or ISP reconnection that interrupts the encoder’s upload. The address change alone does not show what caused a particular stream to stop.
YouTube’s encoder setup calls for a server URL and stream key. Its instructions do not make a fixed public IP a normal prerequisite for YouTube Live. A static-IP or VPN service is therefore not an established default fix for this situation.
Restore the stream after an ISP reconnection
- Check the router’s internet connection. Confirm that it has reconnected and that other devices can reach the internet. If not, address the router or ISP outage before changing YouTube settings.
- Check the encoder. Confirm it is still sending data and look for a reconnect message, start error, or other indication that the upload stopped.
- Verify the current stream settings in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room for the current stream and confirm the server URL and stream key used by the encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as the credential and address information the encoder uses to send its feed. Keep it private; do not reset it just because your public IP changed. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain the setup.
- If the encoder reports a start error, check the key. Compare the encoder’s key with the one shown in Live Control Room. Update the encoder if the key is wrong or no longer matches; YouTube identifies checking and updating the key as a troubleshooting step. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance covers this case.
- If you use RTMPS, verify the selected server URL. Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and configure it with the stream key. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected by TLS/SSL. Encryption does not make the stream immune to an ISP or router interruption. YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain the option.
When a static IP is—and is not—the relevant requirement
A static public IP can matter when a destination service requires an address to be shared for IP whitelisting. For example, India’s NIC webcast service describes a static-IP requirement for its own webcast process. That requirement belongs to that service; it is not evidence that YouTube Live requires a static IP. NIC’s webcast services page sets out its service-specific process.

Collect evidence if the stream keeps dropping
If reconnecting the router and checking the encoder settings do not resolve repeated drops, gather details before changing network services or buying equipment. These records can help distinguish a new address from a broader connection failure:
- The router’s WAN status and event log, including the reported address and any disconnect or reconnect events.
- The encoder’s reconnect and error log, with the time of each interruption.
- The ISP outage or reconnection time, if the provider reports one.
Compare the timestamps. A WAN address change may simply have coincided with a full connection interruption, router WAN event, or CGNAT behavior. Without the router and encoder symptoms, the cause of a particular drop cannot be determined. A VPN, static-IP service, or specific router is not established as a guaranteed fix.
