To play different YouTube radio playlists at set times, schedule the playback in the encoder or a separate playout system—not in YouTube Studio. Studio can schedule live events, but the encoder or automation layer must select and transmit the morning, afternoon, or evening media. For a straightforward setup, use a separate scheduled event for each block; for one continuous event, arrange time-based switching outside YouTube and verify that your playback system supports it.

What YouTube scheduling does—and does not do

YouTube Studio scheduling establishes an event and its expected start time; it does not select local tracks for the encoder. YouTube Help puts the purpose simply: “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream.” YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions describe scheduling the event, copying the server URL and stream key into an encoder, and starting the encoder feed.

This distinction is reflected in YouTube’s Live Streaming API: a liveBroadcast is the event viewers see, while a liveStream carries the audio-video content. The API can create and manage broadcasts and their associated streams, but the broadcast scheduling model does not schedule which local playlist the encoder plays. Google’s API guide and broadcast-and-stream model describe those separate roles.

Choose a workflow for your radio schedule

Workflow Event shape Playlist switching Best fit
Scheduled blocks A separate YouTube live event for each time block; the encoder starts or changes content at each boundary. Prepared and switched by the operator or encoder workflow. When event boundaries, separate event pages, or different promotion for each block matter.
One continuous event One live event stays open while the outgoing feed continues. Playback system must change playlists; clock-based switching needs a separate automation or playout feature. When the stream should remain one event and playlist transitions should happen without ending it.

Before choosing, decide whether the event may end and restart between blocks, whether switching must happen unattended at exact local times, whether your media is local files or another feed, whether each block needs a different event page or notification, and whether you need complete replay archives. The official documentation describes scheduling and playback controls, but does not establish a particular time-of-day automation product or guarantee switching accuracy.

Option 1: Run separate scheduled events for time blocks

This is the clearest approach if a restart between morning, afternoon, and evening programming is acceptable. You create an event for each block in YouTube Studio, then arrange for the encoder to play the corresponding playlist and send it at that time.

  1. Prepare each block’s media. Organize the files for each schedule period so the encoder can play the intended material. Keep a written schedule with the local time zone and block start times.
  2. Schedule the YouTube events. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream for each block and set its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Google’s API implementation guide describes the same broadcast properties for scheduled events. See the broadcast life-cycle guide.
  3. Configure the encoder for each event. In YouTube Studio’s stream setup, copy the server URL and stream key into your encoder as described in YouTube’s encoder instructions. Associate the correct playlist with the right block.
  4. Start and monitor the feed at each boundary. Start the encoder for the scheduled event and switch to the next block’s playlist and event according to your operating plan. Scheduling the event alone will not perform that media switch.

Plan for a handoff: this workflow has event boundaries, so viewers may see the stream end and a new event begin. If the goal is an uninterrupted single event, use a playback system that can switch content while maintaining the outgoing feed instead.

Option 2: Keep one event open and change playlists in the playback layer

OBS can play local audio and video files. Its VLC Video source supports multiple playlist items, ordered or shuffled playback, and looping; VLC must be installed for the source to appear. Those controls are useful for repeat playback, but the documented OBS source controls do not provide a clock-based rule such as “replace the morning playlist at 12:00.” OBS Media Sources documentation

  1. Install VLC if you intend to use OBS’s VLC Video source. Without VLC installed, that source will not appear in OBS.
  2. Add the media source in OBS. Add a VLC Video source and select the files for a playlist. Choose ordered or shuffled playback and enable looping if the list should repeat.
  3. Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube event. Copy the stream server URL and key from the event’s setup in YouTube Studio into the encoder settings, then start the feed.
  4. Provide the time-of-day scheduler separately. To switch named playlists at planned times without an operator, use a clock-based automation or broadcast playout tool that can control the source or media list. Confirm that it supports your desired schedule, event continuity, and recovery behavior; the OBS playlist controls alone do not establish those capabilities.

For a developer-built workflow, YouTube’s Live Streaming API can manage broadcasts and their associated streams. The application still needs a playback scheduler in the encoder or playout layer to choose files at the right times. Google’s common workflow uses a stream configuration for scheduled events, with only one event live at a time; that is not a playlist scheduler. API guide

Keep the YouTube playlist and encoder playlist separate

A YouTube playlist groups videos already on YouTube. An OBS/VLC playlist supplies media to the outgoing live feed. Adding uploaded videos to a YouTube playlist does not make the encoder play those files in the stream. For a radio-style live broadcast made from local recordings, manage the actual playback list in the encoder or playout system. YouTube playlist help

Plan around archives, rights, and local storage

Replay archives

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that an uninterrupted 24/7 stream will have a complete archive, so do not rely on it as a guarantee for an all-day broadcast. YouTube live stream archive help

Music and recording permissions

Check that you have the necessary permissions for each recording and composition in the territories where you stream. A YouTube playlist, or a successful connection to the live event, is not proof that you have those rights.

Storage for local libraries

Local files need enough storage on the computer that supplies the encoder. An external SSD can be a convenience for a large media library, but it is optional: it is not a scheduler or a requirement if the existing storage is adequate. OBS’s media-source documentation does not specify a hardware minimum or recommend a particular drive.

Troubleshoot playlist changes and event handoffs

  • The scheduled event is live, but the wrong music is playing: YouTube scheduling does not choose encoder media. Check which playlist the encoder or playout layer is supplying.
  • The VLC Video source is missing in OBS: Install VLC, which OBS requires for that source to appear.
  • The playlist plays once and stops: Check the source’s loop setting. OBS documents looping as a playback control, not as a time-of-day switch.
  • The stream ends between blocks: Separate events have explicit boundaries. Start the next event and encoder feed according to the handoff plan, or use one event with a playback system that can change playlists without ending the feed.
  • The next playlist does not start at the planned time: Verify that the separate clock-based automation or playout tool is configured for the intended local time and that it actually controls the OBS source or media list. Do not assume a clock schedule is built into YouTube Studio or the documented VLC playlist controls.
  • You cannot find a full replay of a 24/7 stream: The under-12-hour auto-archive guidance is not a guarantee of a complete 24/7 archive. Plan a separate recording or archive workflow if a full replay is essential.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded recordings playing 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. You can upload at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month.
